Frederick Nelson Reiber, 93

Frederick Nelson Reiber, 93, of Allendale, Illinois, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at his home. He was born on November 9, 1932, at home in Allendale, Illinois, the son of George W. and Maggie (McCarrell) Reiber. Nelson married the love of his life, Clara M. Shearer, on November 30, 1952, and together they shared seventy-three years of marriage centered on their faith, love, and devotion to family.

Nelson’s life was marked by hard work, faithful service, and a deep love for the Lord and for others. He began working in the oil fields before going to work for Anderson Brothers Oil Company. In 1965, Nelson and Clara moved to Allendale where they owned and operated Reiber’s Grocery Store for over ten years, becoming a familiar and valued part of the community.

Nelson later worked for Pacific Press & Shear as a serviceman, traveling to several countries setting up presses and shears. He eventually moved into the office where he supervised and oversaw the servicemen. Later in life, Nelson felt called into the ministry and attended seminary at Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City. From 1993 until 2000, he faithfully served several churches including Bethel United Methodist Church, Adams Corner Church, and Benld United Methodist Church. He also held weekly Bible studies with the boys at the Southwest Indiana Youth Village in Vincennes, Indiana.

Nelson remained devoted to his faith throughout his life. He continued attending weekly Wednesday morning prayer meetings with local pastors in town, even meeting on the very morning that the Lord called him home. Nelson loved the Lord deeply and desired everyone he met to know Him as well.

Nelson spent countless hours on the computer sending prayer requests around the world. He and Clara faithfully prayed together every night for their family, friends, and all those in need. For more than twenty years, they also helped raise support for Victorious Children’s Home in Kenya, Africa, operated by Vicki Odundo, who lovingly referred to them as “Mom and Dad.” Nelson will be remembered for his strong faith, servant’s heart, and compassion for others. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Nelson will be remembered by his loving wife, Clara Reiber; daughters, Alena Pettyjohn and husband, David, Kimberly Pierson and husband, Greg, Sandra Wheeler and husband, Jim, Vicki Odundo from Kenya, whom they considered as their own; grandchildren, Joey and Lisha Pettyjohn, Jay and Amy Pettyjohn, Andrew and Chelsey Pierson, Caleb and Maura Pierson, Elijah and Mallorie Pierson, Brooks Wheeler, Meredith and Steve Bennett, Luke and Liz Wheeler, Allie Wheeler, and Hannah Wheeler; great grandchildren, Noah Pettyjohn and Fiancé’ Valerie, Josie Pettyjohn, Jayden, Jake and Jep Pettyjohn, Jerica and Ainsley Pierson, Elisha, Emmett and Elsie Pierson, Lily Pierson, Kaden Meisaichi, Dane and Holly Wheeler, Maddy and Emma Bennett, Summer and Lilah Wheeler; sister, Esther Calverley; sister-in-law, Judy Keepes and her husband, Eugene; many loved nieces, nephews and cousins.

Nelson was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Charles Calverley; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Joann and Bob Johnson, and Johann and Don Shearer.

Norman E. Howell, 90

Norman E. Howell, 90, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 2, 1935, in Mount Carmel, Illinois, the son of Harry A. and Gladys (Shook) Howell. Norman married Rena Hampton on June 19, 1965, and together they enjoyed sixty years of marriage.

Norman loved his family dearly and treasured the time he spent with them. He was a devoted member of the Free Methodist Church, where his faith played a central role in his life. Throughout the years, he faithfully served his church as a Sunday School teacher, music director, and helped direct many Christmas plays. Norman dedicated thirty-five years to teaching Art at Edwards County High School, where he impacted the lives of countless students. He possessed a remarkable artistic talent, designing many signs and works of art throughout his life. Norman took great pride in his work, paying close attention to every detail, and deeply valued the friendships he formed while sharing his artistic gifts with others.

Norman will be remembered by his loving wife, Rena Howell; nieces, Glenda Niehaus, and Angela Adkins; nephew, Mark Cowling; many loved great nieces and nephews along with great-great nieces and nephews.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Phyllis Cowling; brother, Glenn Howell.

David Louis Dardeen; 77

David Louis Dardeen; 77, of West Palm Beach, Florida passed away peacefully on April 22, 2026. He was born on September 21, 1948. David was the son of Louis and Mary Dardeen.

From an early age he was fun loving and showed athletic potential. He played basketball and baseball in high school. At 17, he signed a contract with the triple A farm team of the Oakland Athletics. His baseball career took him to Ft. Lauderdale and then Quebec Canada. A serious car accident ended his baseball career, but his love for the sport never faded. He enjoyed sharing his passion and coached his sons' little league teams. As an adult he enjoyed playing golf and was a member of West Palm Beach Country Club. His sense of humor made him a popular player, and his athleticism helped him become a skilled golfer winning multiple tournaments.

His career was a journey following his passions. He owned a par 3 golf course and two sporting goods stores. He owned a successful pizza restaurant patterned after Bobe's Pizza in Vincennes. The last part of his career was in the auto industry, beginning in sales, moving to department manager, and then to assistant manager of a large auto auction.

Dave was the life of the party and had a wonderful sense of humor. He was generous and valued friendship. He loved to cook and always seemed to make enough to share with a neighbor. He loved his family and always had a story to share. While he was a talented athlete, he will be remembered for being a good friend.

David is survived by his wife Linda, sons Gregg and Bryan, grandchildren Johnathan and Elisabeth; brother Gary Dardeen and sister Mary Walters. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers Gene and Don.

A graveside service will be held at Highland Memorial Cemetery on Saturday May 23, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Central Standard Time.

Mildred Voigt, 88

Mildred Voigt, 88, of O’Fallon, Missouri, passed away on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at the home of her son James in Troy, MO after a brief illness. She was born on January 9, 1938, in Mount Carmel, Illinois, the daughter of Burrell and Emma (Sharp) Hall. Mildred married James L. Voigt on June 29, 1963, in the Free Methodist Church in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. They lived in several states while Jim worked in the electronics field, finally settling down in O’Fallon, Missouri.

While living in Huntsville, Alabama, Mildred and James adopted two children, Suzanne in August 1969 and James in March 1971. They moved to Hendersonville, TN in 1973 and then to Burnsville, MN in 1980. While in Burnsville, Mildred worked for Camera Art processing school pictures. In 1984 Jim was transferred to St. Louis and they settled in St. Peters, MO. Mildred began working for First Foto where she received orders for baby pictures from new parents. She worked for First Foto for thirteen years, until retiring in 2003. She stayed home for a short time then took a painting class where she painted several beautiful scenes. After Jim’s retirement, they decided to sell their home and took a cruise tour to Alaska in 2015. In 2010, they had taken an Amtrak to the Pacific Northwest, and they also took Amtrak to the Grand Canyon in 2019. Mildred enjoyed having her grandchildren and great grandchildren around and treasured time spent with her family.

Mildred will be remembered by her husband of sixty two years, Jim; daughter, Suzanne (Loren) Denard; son, James (Trish) Voigt; grandchildren, Stephanie (Tyler) Rowden, Daniel Branch, Amber Lofland, Kyrsten Baskerville, Kyler Meir, Nathan Meir, Chelsa (Ricky) Simmons, Zachery Hughes and Jaxzin Denard; great grandchildren, Ely Rowden, Bastien Rowden, Cassius Rowden, Delany Rowden, Landon Simmons, Ahna Simmons and Matson Simmons; sisters, Patty Hall, and Clara (Donald) Dearing; many loved nieces and nephews.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Charley, Elvis and Bob; her sister, Jean Youngman.

Mary K. Schrader, 87

Mary K. Schrader, 87, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, peacefully passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at home. She was born on November 3, 1938, in Edwards County, Illinois, the daughter of Louis and Ethel (Bouvy) Hering. She married Glenn Schrader on August 8, 1959, and they celebrated fifty-eight years of marriage until his passing on November 12, 2017.

Mary was the rock of her family, whom she loved dearly. She was also deeply thankful for the many friendships she cherished throughout her life. A devout Catholic, Mary loved her church family at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, where she remained active in the parish for many years. Mary was also very active in the Daughters of the American Revolution when she was able and valued the friendships and fellowship she found there. She always carried herself with grace and took pride in her appearance, always looking well put together. If you had the privilege of knowing Mary, you knew she had a wonderful sense of humor and a special way of making others smile, a gift that remained with her until her final days. Mary also embraced new experiences in life, including enjoying a week of camping for the very first time at the age of forty-eight. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Mary leaves behind her children, Glynnis Fisher of Mesa, AZ, Karla (Sandy) Schrader of Mount Carmel, and Michael (Susan) Schrader of Buckeye, AZ; one grandchild; siblings, Harold L. Hering, Angela Jackson, John Hering, Mike Hering, Emily Summers, and Teresa (Mark) Duncan; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Tonny Lee Orr, 73, of Mt. Carmel, IL passed away on May 4, 2026, at Deaconess Gateway in Newburgh, Indiana.

She was born on August 17, 1952, in Fairfield, IL. She was the daughter of Jack and Edolyn (Gash) Elliott. She worked as a manager for Casino Aztar.

Tonny was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She was a quilter, loved playing solitaire, going out on Friday night with the girls, singing along to her 50s music, and had a favorite pet, her parrot Gizmo.

She is survived by her daughter, Mandi (Eric) Hall of Mt. Carmel; her grandchildren, Alex, Caitlyn, Kayleigh, and Johnathan, and her great-grandchildren, Olivia, Adeline, Elodie, Adler, and Xander.

Tonny was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Scott Orr; her sisters, Summer Elliott-Kendrick, and Terry Edmondson; her brother, Jay Elliott; and one grandson, Jordan Hall.

LaLoma Seibert, 78, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on May 11, 1947, in Princeton, Indiana, the daughter of Gifford and Dorothy (Burkett) Davis. LaLoma married Larry Seibert on May 11, 1966, and together they enjoyed fifty-nine years of marriage centered on their family.

LaLoma will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, and cherished grandmother. She was very proud of her children and loved bringing her family together, especially through the meals she prepared. In her free time, she enjoyed traveling with her husband, Larry. She earned an associate degree in child development and gained valuable experience working as a teacher’s aide and a home health provider. LaLoma was a member of the Eagles and WADI.

Billie Sue Jenks, 68, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Saturday, May 2, 2026, at Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville, Indiana, surrounded by her family.

She was born on November 30, 1957, in Mount Carmel, the daughter of William Guy and Dora Lou (Henson) Ellis.

Billie Sue lived a life centered around the people and moments she loved most. She enjoyed quiet days at home, relaxing with her favorite reality television shows and the loyal companionship of her dog, Tucker. Family meant everything to her, and she rarely missed a chance to be present—whether it was cheering from the stands at her grandkids’ sporting events or gathering together for family time. One of her greatest blessings was becoming a great-grandmother to her precious Collins, who brought her endless joy. Billie Sue’s warmth, devotion, and steady love will be remembered always.

Helen L. Gray, 90, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away on Friday, May 1, 2026, at her daughter’s home in Evansville, Indiana, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on December 19, 1935, in East Chicago, Indiana, the daughter of Wilbert and Helen (Centilli) White. Helen married John O. Gray, Sr., on January 17, 1953, in Whiting, Indiana, and together they enjoyed seventy-two years of marriage before his passing on June 3, 2025.

Helen will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who cherished her family above all else. She had a selfless heart and found true fulfillment in caring for others. Helen took great pride in her yard and found peace tending to her flower gardens. She enjoyed cooking meals for those she loved and was especially known for her thoughtful Christmas goodie bags. Helen had a special affection for animals; raising everything from chickens and peacocks to caring for her cats and dogs. In her quiet moments, she enjoyed relaxing and watching her favorite western shows. She will be missed by her family and friends.

Bruce Wayne Street, 75

Bruce Wayne Street, 75, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away on Friday, April 17, 2026, at Deaconess Memorial Medical Center, in Jasper, Indiana. He was born on July 28, 1950, in Claremont, Illinois, the son of Herbert B. and Martha E. (Atwood) Street. Bruce faithfully served his Country in the United States Army. He married Annie Land and together they enjoyed thirty-four years of marriage before her passing on March 25, 2016.

Bruce was a devoted family man who treasured time spent with those he loved. In his free time, he found peace in the outdoors, especially while hunting and fishing. He was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and enjoyed keeping up with NCAA basketball. Bruce dedicated forty-nine years to Pacific Press and Shear, where he made many friendships before his retirement.

Laurence “Larry” Tedford, 91

Laurence “Larry” Tedford, a retired Certified Public Accountant, passed away on April 15, 2026—Tax Day—surrounded by his loved ones. He was just days shy of his 92nd birthday.

Larry was born on April 20, 1934, on the family farm in Pinkstaff, Illinois, to Robert and Esther Tedford. He often reflected on his humble beginnings: a childhood home without plumbing or electricity and an education that began in a one-room schoolhouse.

After graduating from Lawrenceville High School, Larry worked on the family farm before joining the United States Navy four years later. His service took him far beyond the Midwest, including time stationed in the South Pacific aboard the USS Essex, where he served as a self-described “pencil pusher.” During his Navy years, he began taking business classes, planting the seeds for his future career.

Following his military service, Larry continued working while attending night classes in accounting at the University of Evansville. His dedication paid off when he earned his CPA license at age 32. He went on to spend more than 30 years with what became Kemper CPA Group, taking great pride in helping expand the firm nationwide as a Partner.

On September 12, 1964, Larry married Joanna Mooney, and together they shared 62 years of love and adventure. They raised their three children in Mt. Carmel and cherished the memories made throughout the years.

Larry’s children fondly remember his steady presence in their lives—sponsoring the Lario’s youth basketball team, coaching youth sports, and shucking corn in the early morning hours for Rotary Corn Days each summer. He treasured his early Saturday tee times with friends and enjoyed traveling and golfing for as long as he was able. A devoted Cubs fan, he was ecstatic when WGN arrived in the early 1980s.

Known for his quiet demeanor, generosity, and deep commitment to his community, Larry was an avid supporter of Mt. Carmel Golden/Lady Aces athletics. He contributed his time and leadership to numerous local organizations, including the Mt. Carmel High School Booster Club, the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Wabash Valley College Warriors Boosters, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Larry and Joanna rarely missed a big game, traveling across the country well into their 80s to cheer on their teams.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings: Margaret, John, Treva, and Jerry.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joanna; his brother, Max (Debbie); his sons, Brent (Tracee) and Chris (Christine); his daughter, Sara (Loren); and his grandchildren, Nate, Connor, Elizabeth, Cooper, and Colter.

A private family service will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026, with a public visitation to follow from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Central Time at Short-Cunningham Funeral Home. He will be laid to rest at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Terri M. Ford, 67

Terri M. Ford, 67, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois passed away on April 14, 2026, at home with her loving family by her side.

She was born on October 9, 1958, in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. She was the daughter of George and Mildred (Shoulders) Spaulding. Terri married Tom Ford on June 22, 2019, at the American Legion in Princeton, Indiana.

Terri worked for 34 years for Walmart in El Paso, Texas, Carmi, Illinois and Princeton, Indiana. She was a member of Rolling Thunder Chapter 6 of Evansville, The Daughter’s of Isabella, American Legion Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary, as well as St. Mary’s Parish in Mt. Carmel.

Survived by her husband Tom, and three children, Heather (Robbie) Moore, Donnie Dicus and life partner, Jesse, and Jennifer (Scott) Massamore. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and her sister, Kay.

Terri was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Bill, and sisters, Patty and Georgeann.

A special Thank You to the entire staff of Residential Hospice for their care and concern over the past 15 months. The dedication shown was evident and much appreciated.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 17, 2026, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Short-Cunningham Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with a visitation from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.

Burial will follow the service at Orio Cemetery.

Clayton Scott Kirkman, 40

Clayton Scott Kirkman, 40, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away on April 6, 2026. He was born on January 2, 1986, in Mount Carmel, Illinois, the son of John “Kent” and Paula (Rodgers) Murphy.

Clayton had a deep passion for music and especially loved writing and performing rap songs. He found peace in the outdoors, spending time hunting arrowheads and mushrooms. He was an avid Chicago Bears fan. Growing up, Clayton loved playing baseball and was affectionately nicknamed “Wild Thing” by those who knew him best. Clayton will be remembered for his creativity, his love for music, the outdoors and the joy he brought to family and friends.

Clayton will be remembered by his mother, Paula Murphy and husband Jay; father, John “Kent” Kirkman; sister, Carly (Bill Dill) Kirkman; step-sister, Emily (Brandon) Kurzeja; maternal grandparents, Ronald and Barbara Rodgers; aunts, Janet Sanders, Jessica (Dan) Hinderliter and Janice (Sam) Palmer; uncle, Duke Rodgers; his beloved dog, Kane Kirkman; many loved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Gary D. Howard, Sr., 83

Gary D. Howard, Sr., 83, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away on April 10, 2026, at Oakview Nursing and Rehab. He was born on September 5, 1942, in Princeton, Indiana, the son of Herman E. Howard, Sr. and Ethel (Wedding) Howard.

Gary married the love of his life, Nina Fern (Deffendall) Howard, on July 1, 1961, in Bridgeport, Illinois. Together, they shared sixty-three years of marriage centered around their family before her passing on May 11, 2025. Gary and Nina cherished their time together, especially their evening drives to Beall’s Woods State Park, where they enjoyed the beauty of nature.

Gary will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who took great pride in his family. He especially loved keeping up with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and rarely missed the opportunity to attend their sporting events.

Gary faithfully served his Country in the United States Army. He later worked as a supervisor in shipping and receiving at Snap-On Tools, where he dedicated many years before his retirement. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the VFW and American Legion.

Gary enjoyed playing pool at the VFW, where he was known as a “pool shark.” He also enjoyed following March Madness each year and filling out his bracket. Gary loved spending time with his family, especially during holidays and cookouts, and took pride in tending to his vegetable and flower gardens. Gary also loved mowing and took pride in keeping his yard looking its best. He also enjoyed simple pleasures, like watching trains and taking drives in his Jeep with the top off.

Gary is survived by his children, Benita Tarlton, Angie Campbell, and Gary Howard, Jr.; seven grandchildren, Bethany Stephens, Jeff Tarlton, Michael Tarlton, Erica (Shane) Cooper, Tanner (Ariel) Campbell, Becky (Hunter) Smith, and Keri Howard; fifteen great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Nina Howard; his brother, Herman E. Howard, Jr.

A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, April 17, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery with Pastor Brad Garner officiating. Full Military Honors will be conducted in recognition of his service to our Country.

Alice Maureen Moore, 77

Alice Maureen Moore, 77, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at home. She was born on January 21, 1949, in Princeton, Indiana, the daughter of Robert John and Thelma (Hortin) Steckler. She married Wayne Moore and he preceded her in death.

Alice will be remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother who cherished time with her family above all else. Alice was a dedicated auditor for shipping companies and took great pride in her work. She loved her cats who brought her joy. Alice also found joy in spending time with her dear friend, Christina Pierce. She will be missed by her family and friends.

Alice will be remembered by her sons, David Hill and Eric Hill; daughter, Amy Hill- Poehlein, and bonus daughter, Jeni Moore; grandchildren, Garrett Hill and Raven Poehlein; brothers, Jim (Marilee) Steckler, Dan (Terra) Steckler, Phil (Viola) Steckler, and John (Sandy) Steckler; sisters, Mary Nowaskie, Cathy (Rick) Snow, Margaret (Ben) Felts, Carolyn (Lary) Caddell, Emily (Doug) Banet, and Sara (Patrick) Dee; many loved nieces, nephews and cousins.

Richard Keith Walter, 95

Richard Keith Walter, affectionately known as "Dick," was born on March 7, 1931, in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. He peacefully left this earth on February 13, 2026, in Green Valley, Arizona, entering the Kingdom of Heaven after a life well-lived.

Dick was a self-employed dentist and shared a successful practice with his wife, Norma, who also managed the office. His professional journey was marked by his commitment to his craft, exemplified by his role as President of the Winnebago County Dental Society. He earned his Doctor of Dentistry (DDS) degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, in 1963, following an undergraduate degree from Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois.

A testament to the American dream, Dick’s early years were defined by hard work and determination. He contributed to the family store, moved furniture, and took on various jobs, including working on the railroad as a fireman. His sense of duty led him to serve in the United States Air Force for four years as a Military Policeman, where he performed a tour of duty during the Korean War in Seoul, South Korea. It was during this time that he utilized the GI Bill to pursue his education.

In addition to his professional endeavors, Dick was known for his vibrant personality and strong passions. A dedicated college football fan, he avidly supported his favorite team, Notre Dame. His adventurous spirit shone through in his love for aviation; he earned his private pilot license and enjoyed flying Cessna aircraft with the Blackhawk Flying Club from Teeter Hanger in Rockford, Illinois. Furthermore, he cherished his experiences at the EAA Fly-in and relished watching aerial performances from the Blue Angels, Thunderbirds, and Vintage Warbirds. In his retirement years, he found joy in playing golf at Desert Hills Country Club.

Dick was not only a talented professional but also a beloved patriarch. He was profoundly proud of his family and led by example, instilling values of integrity and honesty in all his interactions. He leaves behind a loving family, including his devoted wife, Norma Walter, sister; Carol Sue Walter; sons, David Walter and Mark Walter; daughters-in-law, Thanea Walter and Sharon Walter; grandchildren, Alex Walter, Ashley Walter, Dylan Walter, and Katrina Walter; grandson-in-law, Tyler Spitz; and great-grandson, Ezra Spitz.

He is preceded in death by his father, Frederick Walter; mother, Eva Walter; brother, Frederick Walter (Sonny) and sister, Yvonne Collins.

Dick Walter's legacy is one of resilience, love, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. He will be deeply missed, yet fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Charles William Tennis, 78

Charles William Tennis, 78, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois passed away on April 3, 2026, at the Villas of Hollybrook in Mt. Carmel, Illinois.

He was born on May 2, 1947, in Mt. Carmel, IL. He was the son of Eugene and Marjorie Elizabeth (Pool) Tennis. He married Janice (Clodfelter) Tennis on April 16, 1977, in Lancaster, Illinois.

Charles graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in 1965 and from Wabash Valley College with an associate’s degree. Charles was also a member of the Illinois National Guard. After returning from the National Guard, he worked with his father, on the family farm. After his father retired, Charles continued operating the farm until 2005, when he and Jim Russell formed RT Farms, farming together for 24 years.

Along with his love of farming, Charles enjoyed watching baseball, especially the St. Louis Cardinals. He also enjoyed going to Florida for the winter months and loved river cruises.

Charles was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Lancaster Church of Christ where he served as a trustee. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Wabash County Farm Bureau, the Wabash County Youth Foundation, the Lancaster Community Club, and a director for the Farm Service Agency.

He is survived by his spouse, Janice; daughter Jana Lynn (Matthew) Marriott; two sisters, Janet (Marion) James and Barbara (Kirk) Peterson; two grandchildren, Ella Grace and Mackenzie Fay Marriott; brothers and sisters-in-law Lois and Darrell Balding, Judy and Larry Wilkinson, Sharon Louie, and Thomas Schmitt Sr.; 14 nieces and nephews, 28 great-nieces and nephews, six great-great-nieces and nephews; and special friends Jim and Lauren Russell.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Virginia Schmitt and Mary Ellen Tennis; mother and father-in-law, Eloise and Charles Clodfelter; and nephew, Jeffery James.

A Private Family Service will be held for Charles, and burial will follow the service at the Moravian Cemetery in West Salem, IL.

Daniel T. Andrews, 77

Daniel T. Andrews, 77, of Salem, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on March 24, 2026. Born on July 3, 1948, in Princeton, Indiana, he was the son of Alberta Taylor Andrews and the late Ted H. Andrews.

Raised in St. Francisville, Illinois, Dan was a proud graduate of Saint Francisville Community High School, where he played on the basketball team. He later earned his degree in electrical engineering from Southern Illinois University, pursuing a distinguished career in mining and material handling. Over the years, his expertise benefited teams at Sigeco, GE, and TMEIC.

In 2000, Dan married his beloved wife, Kelley. Together they built a life in Salem filled with his many passions: woodworking, gardening, tinkering with tractors, playing with trains, and flying kites. Beyond his hobbies, Dan was deeply committed to his community, serving as a volunteer EMT, a Red Cross volunteer, Volunteering for the Salvation Army, and as a mentor at the Oakland Intermediate School. If you ever asked Dan how he was doing, you were guaranteed a smile and his signature response: "Mean as ever, twice as ugly."  He will fondly be remembered for his sharp wit and trademark sarcasm.   

Dan is survived by his wife of 25 years, Kelley Andrews; his mother, Alberta Andrews; two brothers, David (Judy) Andrews and Curtis Andrews; three brother in laws, Scott (Holly) Dunning, John (Gayle) Dunning, and Ninh (Mia) Nguyen, his children, Donald (Misty) Andrews and Jennifer Andrews; three grandchildren, Megan (Logan) Dill, Allison (Jake) Kough, and Olivia Andrews; and one great-grandchild, Lucas Dill. Many nieces and nephews, and grand nephews. As well as many friends that have become family. Everyone was welcome at "Camp Andrews"!

A funeral service to celebrate Dan's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, 305 Roanoke Blvd., Salem, VA 24153. This service will also be livestreamed for those who are unable to attend in person. Friends may visit with the family from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2026, at the funeral home.  A second funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at the Wabash Presbyterian Church, 11188 N. 2300 Blvd, Allendale, Illinois 62410 with internment to follow in the Orio Cemetery. Carrel (Compton) Burton, 93, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away on Friday, March 27, 2026, at Oakview Nursing and Rehabilitation surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on October 29, 1932, in Cowling, Illinois, the daughter of Claude and Wilma (Baxter) Compton. Carrel married Clifford Burton, Jr., on October 27, 1952, and they enjoyed sixty-six years of marriage before his passing on December 20, 2018.

Carrel loved her family very much and was always there for them. She never met a stranger and was quick to help anyone in need. In her free time, Carrel enjoyed being outside, taking care of her flowers and gardening. She also liked making crafts.

Carrel will be remembered by her son, Terry (Terri) Burton; two daughters, Janet Gloria and Debbie Legg; four grandchildren; many loved nieces, nephews and cousins.

Hope Elisabeth Lane, 21

Hope Elisabeth Lane, 21, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville, Indiana, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on December 9, 2004, in Newburgh, Indiana, the daughter of Ronald and Shelly (Garner) Lane. Hope was a graduate of Mount Carmel High School Class of 2023.

Hope will be remembered for her radiant smile and the genuine kindness she extended to everyone she met. She lived with humility and a natural ability to make others feel included and valued. Those who knew her understood how easy she was to love, and how deeply she loved in return. Hope brought light into the lives of others, making days brighter, hearts fuller, and burdens lighter simply by her presence. Above all, Hope was a devoted and loving mother to her daughter, Kennedy Laine Smith, whom she considered her greatest blessing. The love she had for her was evident in every part of her life. Hope was devoted to her work at The Well Daycare, and both the children and her colleagues held a special place in her heart. Her legacy of love and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
