Patsy Joan (Meritt) Hocking, 87

Patsy Joan (Meritt) Hocking, 87, of Mt. Carmel went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, March 27, 2025, with her loving family by her side.  

Patsy was born on October 19, 1937, in Wayne County, Illinois, the daughter of Dorthy Meritt and Carson Meritt. She married Andy Hocking on August 11, 1956, and together they enjoyed 68 years of marriage.

Patsy was a graduate of Mt. Carmel High School. She was a homemaker, a Pampered Chef consultant, and was known throughout the region for her delicious baked goods, most notably her angel food cakes, a tradition started by her mother and carried on today by her daughter and granddaughter. 

Patsy was devoted to her family and to her strong Christian faith, working at many church functions. She was a member of Keensburg Methodist Church where she served as a youth leader and a Sunday school teacher. Every July, Patsy, her sister, and other church volunteers would take the youth to church camp and would cook three meals per day, even without air conditioning. Patsy was later a member of Evangelical United Methodist Church in Mt. Carmel.

Patsy enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all her family. She was often the host for many overnight family guests. Among her favorite traditions was hosting the annual family Thanksgiving dinner which often included over 75 family members and friends. 

Pasty was a member of the Tuesday morning bowling league in Mt. Carmel for many years. She enjoyed being active and could often be seen on a walk throughout town, shopping, and spending time with family. She enjoyed gardening and canning. Putting up sweet corn was always a special family event. She and Andy were avid Mt. Carmel Golden Aces fans, having reserved “gold seats” for many years.

Patsy loved to travel and would often talk about all the places she was able to see. 

Patsy is survived by her husband Andy, of Mt. Carmel; daughters Shelley (Kim) Richardson of Mt. Carmel, Gayla (Alan) Rooney of Mt. Carmel, Jana (Justin) Clements of Evansville, and son Patrick (Cindy) Hocking of Evansville. Ten grandchildren Lindsey (Joe) Dee, Ashley (Zach) Kanipe, Brittney (Jason) Ishmael, Kyle Peach (Jill Winter), Ryan Peach, Sean (Chrissy) Rooney, Jake (Kelley) Clements, Kacie (Tanner) Hayes, Connor (Maddie) Clements, and Aaryn Clayton. Twenty-two great-grandchildren also survive with another arriving in October. 

Also surviving are two sisters, Mary Lou Jeffers of Mt. Carmel and Eva Smith of Albion, along with several nieces and nephews.  

Patsy was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Harold and Leland Meritt, and sister Kathryn Cowling.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 1st at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Short-Cunningham Funeral Home in Mt. Carmel, with pastors Jason Ishmael and Allan Wright officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 11 a.m.

Nathaniel Ray Smith, 20

Nathaniel Ray Smith, 20, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.  He was born on July 14, 2004 in Heidelberg, Germany, the son of Joseph Smith and Theresa (Bumgardner) Trauger.  He graduated from Mount Carmel High School Class of 2022. 

Nathan was a dedicated and hard-working individual, with his first job at Tennis Dairy Farm. He later worked at Rosati’s in Mount Carmel, where he met his girlfriend, Hope. He always said that was the best job because he met the love of his life.  Currently employed at Toyota, Nathan took great pride in his work. In his free time, he enjoyed playing hockey, running cross country, hanging out with his friends and riding BMX in his youth.  He also had a passion for attending car shows, where he could appreciate and admire the craftsmanship of all kinds of vehicles.  Nathan was a skilled mechanic and could fix just about anything. Above all, Nathan loved his family and treasured the time he spent with them.  He especially loved watching his little girl grow and learn new things.  Nathan’s presence on this earth will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Nathan will be remembered by the two lights in his life; girlfriend, Hope Lane and daughter, Kennedy Laine Smith; mother, Theresa Trauger and husband, Brad; father, Joseph Smith and wife, Christina; siblings, Madison Drew, Wesley (Riley) Trauger, Alisha (Dylan) Bosse, Hannah Smith, and Levi Smith; special niece, Nyla Bosse; the whole Lane family who loved Nathan dearly;grandparents, John Bumgardner, Isabella McNew, Gary VanMatre, Betsy Wilkinson, Patricia (Alton) Gautier; many loved cousins, aunts and uncles.  

Nathan was preceded in death by his brother, Ethan Smith; grandfather, Richard Smith; grandmother, Judy Bumgardner.

Donald Eugene Kieffer, 83

Donald Eugene Kieffer, 83, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, peacefully passed away Sunday, March 23, 2025, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

A funeral mass will be held Saturday March 29, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with burial beside his loving wife at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery following the service.

Family and friends are invited to a visitation Friday, March 28, 2025, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with a Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary’s School General Fund.

Don was born on August 15, 1941, in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, (on a farm south of the Wabash River) the son of Eugene Carl and Viola Lorena (Peter) Kieffer. Don attended high school at St. Henry’s Preparatory Seminary in Belleville, Illinois. He attended two years at St. Henry’s College also in Belleville. Don received a BA degree in philosophy from St. Meinrad Seminary in St. Meinrad, Indiana in 1963. Don proudly served his country from 1964-1966 as a U.S. Army chaplain’s assistant in Vietnam. Upon his return from Vietnam, he furthered his education at Chicago Technical College with a BS degree in civil engineering.

He began working in engineering for Willett Hofmann and Associates in Joliet, Illinois, then to Rockford, Illinois and finally Dixon, Illinois for this firm where he earned his Professional Engineer’s License. His dad called him in 1978 asking him to return home to work for him at Kieffer Brothers Construction transitioning to Community Natural Gas where he served as President from March 1995 until February 2019 and then Chairman of the Board until his death.

On August 21, 1971, Don married Carol Ann McCaffrey in Dixon, Illinois at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. To this union five children were born: Karen (Gus) Ikonomopoulos of Lakeway, Texas, Ann (David) James of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, Karl (Peggy) Kieffer of Highland Park, Illinois, Bradley (Allison) Kieffer of New Orleans, Louisiana, and Dean Kieffer of Mt. Carmel, Illinois. Don was immensely proud of raising five children and seeing his eight grandchildren flourish.

Don enjoyed playing golf, Texas Hold ‘Em, Sudoku (hobby to keep his mind sharp), watching his favorite teams-Green Bay Packers, St. Louis Cardinals, University of Illinois football and basketball, and socializing at Rounds. He enjoyed the annual family vacation in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. He traveled frequently to Germany to spend time with Karl’s family, exploring his roots and living the daily German life. His adventures took him to Italy, Southeast Asia, Europe, Hawaii, AYH trips and throughout the United States. Don’s greatest love was spending time with his family.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Elks. As a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, he served as Grand Knight, Treasurer, and received the Diocesan Friendship Award.

In addition to his children, Don is survived by eight grandchildren, Levi James, Brianna (Jonas) Trimble, Jason (Anna) Ikonomopoulos, Lexi Ikonomopoulos, Jordan Brooks, Donovan, Connor and Ryan Kieffer; one greatgrandchild, Evangeline Ikonomopoulos; siblings, James (Marilyn) Kieffer, Charles (Mary Ruth) Kieffer, Daniel (Kathy) Kieffer, Linda (Phil) Keepes and Jeanne (Willy) Condol; brother-in law, Gary Lewis; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Carol of 45 years; and sisters, Patricia Kieffer and Rose Lewis.

Mary Katherine (Moeller) Rigg, 78

Mary Katherine (Moeller) Rigg, 78, of Mt. Carmel, was welcomed home by her Heavenly Father on March 20, 2025, after a short stay at Memorial Hospital in Jasper, Indiana.

She was born on July 2, 1946, in Winslow, Indiana, later embraced as the cherished and much-prayed for daughter of Charles and Enola Moeller.

She married David H. Rigg on Oct. 30, 1964, and together they enjoyed more than 60 years of marriage.

She graduated from Mt. Carmel High School in 1964, and a year later she and David were thrilled to welcome home their first daughter, Karen Ann (Rigg) Kennard. Fifteen years later, they decided to do it all again, rejoicing in the arrival of a second daughter, Jennifer Lynn (Rigg) McNeece.

Mary K., as she was affectionately known by all those who loved her, went to work in the medical records department of Wabash General Hospital while still a teenager, beginning what would become a long career serving the local medical community. She dedicated her time, service, and talents to local physicians, enjoying long stints with Drs. Fuller, Cato, and Shah.

Mary K. and David, who enjoyed a long career with Allendale Gravel Company, both retired in the summer of 2006, and later, in fulfillment of a promise made to her husband many years before, they built a little house in the woods near David’s childhood home, together enjoying for many years the quietness and solitude of country life.

They also liked to travel, spending winters in their Florida home, attending as many Gaither Vocal Band concerts as they could, and going on cross-country bus trips with dear friends.

Among her proudest affiliations and achievements was her service and membership to her sorority sisters of the Beta Rho Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. She started in Tau Chapter in November of 1968 and progressed up through Beta Rho Master. She received her Silver Certificate - honoring 25 years - and, later, the Order of the Rose for 50 years of membership. Most recently she served as the treasurer of the Beta Sigma Phi City Council.

Her sorority sisters were among her most cherished and loyal friends, enjoying fun and fellowship through their regular meetings, holiday parties, amusing outings, and philanthropic opportunities.

In addition, she was a member of the Wabash General Hospital Auxiliary, often serving the public in the hospital gift shop.

Mary K. was a woman of great faith. After being raised in a steadfast Catholic home, she later joined with David and extended her service and immense love of Jesus to the modest-but-mighty parishioners of Asbury Chapel, where she was a member until her death.

She showed her love for her family and friends by working tirelessly to make sure each one of them always found within her a place of comfort and support. Whether keeping an immaculate home for her family, ensuring David had a warm meal at the end of a long workday, caring for her daughters through both milestones and mishaps, or making time for a long chat with a friend in need of encouragement, those who knew her and loved her will remember her with fondness and gratitude.

Even when her body no longer allowed her to do the things she once enjoyed so much, she used social media to keep in close touch with friends and distant family, extending to them messages of affection and inspiration, and to share her admiration and love for her daughters’ and grandchildren’s accomplishments and life journeys.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Enola Moeller; in-laws, Hughes and Katie Rigg; and a beloved infant granddaughter, Paige Katherine Kennard, whose untimely death inspired her love of collecting and displaying angels around her home.

Mary K.’s family takes great solace in knowing that she was welcomed home to Heaven by her mother, whom she greatly missed, and is now holding Paige once again.

She is survived by her devoted husband, David; daughters, Karen Kennard and her husband, Dick, of New Albany, Indiana, and Jenny McNeece and her husband, Marc, of Vincennes, Indiana.

She also leaves behind grandchildren, whom she adored so much, Abigail Kennard and Jacob Kennard; as well as a brand new great-granddaughter, Tillie Rae Kennard, and a bonus granddaughter, Vivien McNeece.

And we would be remiss in not mentioning her many cherished animals, pictures of whom she loved to share on social media: her dear cat, Buddy, who we know was waiting for her just across the Rainbow Bridge, and Toby, who lives at home with David, as well as her “grand-dogs,” AJ, Luna, Wallace and Violet, and “grand-cats,” Gus and Bit.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25, at Short-Cunningham Funeral Home, 527 N. Mulberry St., Mt. Carmel, with visitation from noon until the hour of service.

Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery.

Gary Wayne Liddle, 75

Gary Wayne Liddle, 75, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2025, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville, Indiana with his loving family by his side.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday, March 23, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Short Funeral Home conducted by Pastor Mark Richison. Gary will be buried with full military rites at Highland Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. prior to the service. Donations in Gary’s memory can be made to U. S. A. Military Veterans Honor Guard or Wabash County Shelter Buddies. Envelopes will be available at the visitation and service at Short-Cunningham Funeral Home.

Gary was born on January 11, 1950, in Mt. Carmel, Illinois to Leon P. and Sarah M. (Sprinkle) Liddle. He was a graduate of Mt. Carmel High School Class of 1968. He served his country in the U.S. Army in Vietnam.

He married Diane Williams on August 5, 1972, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Mt. Carmel. They enjoyed 52 years together. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service. Gary was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge 715, VFW, West Berwick Golf Club, and MCHS Alumni Foundation.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Diane; daughter, Leesa D. Swaggerty; grandchildren Luke and Chase Swaggerty; and siblings Mark Liddle and Randy Liddle of Mt. Carmel. Gary loved nothing better than watching his grandchildren in their activities. He enjoyed horse racing, playing golf, and working in his yard.

Albert Junior Morris, 88

Albert Junior Morris, age 88, of Cincinnati, Ohio, formerly of Mt. Carmel, born June 6, 1936, passed away on March 17, 2025.

No formal visitation or funeral service is planned at this time and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Junior had a lifelong passion for the oil patch, dedicating most of his career to the industry. He enthusiastically shared stories of his time in the field until his final days. He also proudly served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Oakland, California from 1957 to 1959, before returning to his life in the southern Illinois oil fields. A skilled shade-tree mechanic, Junior restored numerous antique cars, with his pride and joy being a 1972 white convertible VW Karmann Ghia.

Above all, Junior was a devoted family man, a supportive and loving husband to his wife of nearly 70 years, Peggy, and a proud father to his daughter, Sonya.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy, daughter Sonya, and sister Betty Putnam. He also leaves behind nieces and many dear friends.

Linda Lou (Seibert) Stoner, 75

Linda Lou (Seibert) Stoner, 75, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2025 surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on December 4, 1949 in Princeton, Indiana, the daughter of Sharon “Russell” and Orpha Ruth “Virgina” (Reed) Seibert. Growing up, Linda was lovingly raised by her maternal grandparents, Charles and Goldie Reed.

Linda will be remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Linda cherished the time spent with her grandchildren, creating memories that she held dear. She dedicated nearly forty years of her working career to Champion Labs in West Salem and Albion, where she made many lasting friendships along the way. In her free time, she found joy in the outdoors, and loved mowing and taking care of her yard. Linda attended Heartland Worship Center and loved her church family.

Linda will be remembered by her son, Steven Stoner and wife, Cassie; daughter, Stephanie Bosecker and husband, Tracey; grandchildren, Brandon (Karisa) Bosecker, Brady Bosecker, Trisen Stoner, Connor Stoner, Jett Hicks and Trenton Hicks; brothers, Randy (Michelle) Seibert, and Danny Seibert; sisters, Debbie (Shannon) Flickinger, and Sherry (Eric) Thomason; many loved cousins, nieces and nephews. Linda was preceded in death by her parents.

Ruby Irene Kirkman, 99

Ruby Irene Kirkman, 99, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away at The Villas of Holly Brook, on Thursday, March 13, 2025, with her loving family by her side.

Ruby was born to the late Virgil Eugene Jackman and Hester Louise (Ilant) Jackman on October 20, 1925, in Lawrenceville, Illinois. Ruby married the love of her life, Gordon Kirkman, on March 21, 1947, in the Presbyterian Church in Orio where she was a member for many years and was active in the choir and was on several committees. Ruby and Gordon enjoyed 58 years of marriage together. After marrying Gordon, she became a member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Mt. Carmel and was honored as a 50-year member. She loved her church and served whenever she could. Ruby and Gordon were active in the church choir. She served on the Mt. Carmel Day Care Board and was Elder Emeritus. Her favorite scripture was the 23rd Psalm.

Ruby loved to entertain in her home with family and friends and was an active member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority.

Her family was very devoted to Ruby and survivors include daughters:

Janice (Sam) Palmer of Phoenix, Arizona, Janet Sanders of Allendale, Illinois, and a son, Kent Kirkman of Mt. Carmel, Illinois; sisters, Wanda Johnson and Charlene (David) Putnam; 6 grandchildren: Tim Sanders, Samuel Palmer, Summer Milroy, Tyler Kirkman, Clayton Kirkman, and Carly Kirkman; 4 great-grandchildren: Zachary Palmer, Lily Kirkman, Conner Kirkman, and Lola Gates; and 1 great-great-grandchild, Violet Palmer. Preceding Ruby in death were her parents; husband, Gordon Kirkman; brothers, Dale Jackman and Jim Jackman; and son-in-law, Charles Sanders.

Connie Jean (Hershey) Padgett, 68

The life journey of Connie Jean (Hershey) Padgett, 68, ended on March 8, 2025 in Mt. Carmel, Illinois with the love and support of her family and friends. Connie was born August 2, 1956 to Albert Gene and Marjorie Lucille (Leek) Hershey. Connie grew up in Allendale, Illinois before moving to St. Francisville, Illinois where she spent most of her adult life.

Connie married Tom Padgett on February 26, 1978, he remains a special friend. Together they had two children, Gabe and Valarie.

Connie graduated in 1974 from Allendale High School and later from Wabash Community College. Connie spent her career as an office manager. She was generous, kind-hearted and willing to help anyone in need and she did so with her beautiful smile. For years she helped raise a garden in support of the DFPD annual chowder. She was also a member of the Allendale Christian Church.

Connie is survived by her children, Gabe (Stephanie) Padgett of St. Francisville and Valarie Waggoner (Jimmy Butler) of Olney. She had two grandsons who were the loves of her life- Camden and Crew Waggoner of Olney. She is survived by one brother, Mike Hershey (Kay) of Allendale and Aunt Rita Byers of Evansville. Connie is also survived by her niece, Amy (Mike) Blake of Mt. Carmel and nephews, Justin (Kami) Hershey of Owensboro, KY, Kyle (Amanda) Hershey of Mt. Carmel and Cory (Erin) Hershey of Altamont along with many great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and many aunts and uncles.

A graveside service will be held for Connie on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Wabash Presbyterian (Orio) Cemetery. Cunningham Funeral Home is assisting the family during this difficult time.

Vernon L. Henze, 83

Vernon L. Henze, 83, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Friday, March 7, 2025, at Wabash General Hospital with his loving family by his side. He was born on March 13, 1941, in rural Wabash County, Illinois, the son of Jacob Henry and Elise (Kleinschmidt) Henze. He married Barbara Ann Isaac on April 20, 1968, at Zion Lutheran Church, and they enjoyed fifty-six years of marriage focusing on their faith and family.

Vernon proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was a member of the 157th Combat Engineering Battalion in Darmstadt, Germany. Barbara and Vernon were weekend leaders in Tres-Dias for forty-six years and were blessed to be among the first to participate in the Walk To Emmaus in Germany. Vernon was a farmer in Wabash County. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and camping. Vernon greatly enjoyed helping his community. He was an asset to the 4-H Youth Foundation and was superintendent of the rabbit program for thirty-eight years. Vernon loved serving his Lord and was a member of Hope Lutheran Church. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Vernon leaves behind his beloved wife, Barbara; son, Brian (Heather) Henze; daughter, Lynette (Steven) Henze; grandsons, Bryce (Isabelle) Henze, Preston (Kelsey) Henze, and Zachary Mark; one sister, Doris J. Thurston, and many cousins and friends.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents.

Karen D. Raber, 65, of Browns, Illinois passed away Friday, March 7, 2025, at Select Specialty Hospital in Evansville, Indiana with family by her side.

A Funeral service for Karen will be Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Short-Cunningham Funeral Home in Mt. Carmel. Visitation for family and friends will be from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. before the service. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Albion, Illinois. Donations can be given to Mt. Zion Cemetery Fund in her memory.

Karen was born November11, 1959 in Charles City, Iowa to Richard and Mildred (Summers) Kennard. She married Merle E. Raber at Friedens Church on April 14, 1984. They were together for forty years.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Hannah C. Raber of Newport, Tennessee; and siblings Kevin (Debbie) Kennard of Keensburg, Illinois and Kristin Kennard of Browns, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Karen was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church of Albion, Illinois. She graduated from Mt. Carmel High School Class of 1978 and Wabash Valley College. She worked as a Customer Service Representative for Farm Credit for forty years.

She loved camping and just being outside. She enjoyed horseback riding and hanging with her dog Rowdy.

Fred Eldon Kramer, 97

Fred Eldon Kramer, 97, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois passed away at home on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Fred was born in DeKalb, Illinois on July 9, 1927, to John Everett Kramer and Elsie May (Pope) Kramer. Fred’s younger years were spent around Bone Gap and Mt. Carmel, Illinois until he was drafted to the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. After discharge, he attended auto body and welding school in Nashville, Tennessee on the G.I. Bill. Fred then worked at Carlton Motors and Schalk Body Shop in Mt. Carmel before opening K & F Body Shop, which he owned and operated from 1967 to 1999.

On October 9, 1954, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Montgomery in West Salem, Illinois. Fred and Dorothy celebrated their 70th anniversary in October 2024. Fred and Dorothy had six children, son Ed (Sandy) Kramer of Damiansville, Illinois, daughter Angie (Jeff) Hirsch of Frankfort, Indiana, son Ted (Leslie) Kramer of Mt. Carmel, daughter Gloria (Tony) Kieffer of Mt. Carmel, son John (Shannon) Kramer of Mt. Carmel, and daughter Jaleigh (Dan) Peterson of Mt. Carmel. Fred had 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Edith Anthis and Patricia Owens; and brothers Lloyd Kramer, John Kramer, and Orville Kramer; and one infant brother. Fred was also preceded in death by his granddaughter Amy Kramer.

Fred enjoyed fishing on the Wabash River, gardening, and raising purebred Hereford cattle with his grandsons.

No formal visitation will be held. Graveside services will be held Monday, March 10, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Highland Memorial Cemetery in Mt. Carmel.

Patricia Kay (Stallins) Summers, 71

Patricia Kay (Stallins) Summers, 71, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2025. She was born on November 9, 1953, in Evansville, Indiana, the daughter of Arnold and Elizabeth (Barns) Stallins, and raised by her stepfather, Ralph Hajek. She married Robert Summers on February 15, 1986, and together they enjoyed thirty-nine years of marriage.

Pat never met a stranger. She liked to talk and make people laugh. Pat loved shopping and often made shopping an event for her family and friends. She had a love for flowers, always making their front porch beautiful. Pat told everyone “don’t send flowers when I die, bring them to me while I’m still here to enjoy them”. Pat loved diamond rings and collected several of them, often wearing one on each finger. She really loved her bling.

Pat leaves behind her beloved husband, Bob; daughter, Lonna Downard; son, Steven (Kisha) Summers; grandchildren, Taylor Bettis, Lathan Barker, Zayne and Violet Summers; Brothers, Don (Kathy) Stallins, Mark (Emma) Stallins; sister, Chrell (Butch) Jameson; half-sisters, Vicki (Sam) Folsom, Libby Dix; several nieces and nephews.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents and stepfather; brothers, Mike Stallins, Tim (Becky) Stallins;

Charles P. Pierce, 85

Charles P. Pierce, 85, of Lancaster Illinois, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2025, at his residence peacefully in his sleep.

There are no services planned at this time. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Charles was born in Edwards County to Kenneth and Bernice (Macer) Pierce on September 23, 1939. He graduated from Allendale High School. He married Patty McKay on September 22, 1961, at Adams Corner Church by Pastor Earl Lytle. Charles served his country in the U.S. Army. He worked at Snap-On for thirty years as a supervisor.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Brian (Dianna) Pierce of Mt. Carmel, Carter (Christina) Pierce of Mt. Carmel; four grandchildren, Amanda Tomes, Shelby Jones, Ally Bunting, Addy Bell; seven great grandchildren with one on the way; siblings, Theda Bradshaw, Sandra Akers, and Robert Pierce; and his best friend, “BudDog”.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Patty; two sisters Debbie Pierce and Mary Pierce; and two brothers, Carl Pierce and Harold Pierce.

Charles loved to spend time with family. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved fishing and hunting. He liked woodworking and had his own sawmill. He enjoyed the annual Pierce Chowder.

Penny Sue (Campbell) Loewen, 65

Penny Sue (Campbell) Loewen, 65, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away March 2, 2025, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Evansville, Indiana.

A service celebrating her life will be held Friday, March 7, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Short-Cunningham Funeral Home. A burial will follow the service at Oaklawn Cemetery, 1473 Pulleyville Road, St. Francisville, Illinois.

Visitation will be Friday, March 7, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service at Short-Cunningham Funeral Home.

Penny was born on September 18, 1959, in Lawrenceville, Illinois to the late Ralph “Jack” Campbell and Louella V. (Longbons) Campbell. In her youth, Penny’s passion for performing brought her to southwest Texas where she began her musical career working with Happy Shahan at Alamo Village and eventually working alongside many talented artists including Randy Travis.

On May 18, 2003, Penny married the love of her life, Rodney V. Loewen, in The Dalles, Oregon, and together they celebrated 21 wonderful years of marriage.

Penny is survived by her beloved husband, Rodney V. Loewen; her two children, Daniel Kyle Ingram of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, and Candice Cheyenne Perez of Brackettville, Texas; her two siblings, Jackie Lee Campbell of St. Francisville, Illinois, and Loretta Moody of Mt. Carmel, Illinois; and her five grandchildren: Kylie Rose Ingram, Christopher Matthew Ingram, Tyler Perez, Calista Perez, and Travis Perez. She is preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Louis Campbell.

Penny’s life was a beautiful symphony of humor, talent, and warmth. A gifted and passionate musician, she was known for her incredible voice, songwriting ability, and skillful guitar playing. Music was not just her talent; it was her way of connecting with others and leaving a mark on their hearts. Along with several noteworthy accomplishments throughout her lifetime, Penny was also a published author, having written ‘God, LORD God, Discovering Our True Identity’. Whether she was performing or simply sharing a song, story, or spiritual message with loved ones, Penny’s essence shone through in everything she did.

It wasn’t just her music that made her unforgettable. Penny had a quick wit and a sharp sense of humor that made her the life of any room. She always had just the right thing to say to make you laugh, often at the perfect moment, and her charm and beauty were second only to her confidence. She was the kind of person who could lift others up with just a look or a word. Her laughter was infectious, and her humor, which she found in even the most challenging situations, was a true gift to all who knew her.

Penny’s legacy is one of love, joy, and creative expression. Her music will continue to echo in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to hear it, and her warmth and humor will live on in the many lives she touched. A small museum containing her legacy can be seen at the St. Francisville High School.

Vereal L. (Green) Sutton, 92

Vereal L. (Green) Sutton, 92, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2025 at Wabash General Hospital.  She was born on April 26, 1932 in Vincennes, IN, the daughter of Melvin Green and Margaret (Garold) Carter.  Vereal married William Robert Sutton on December 27, 1948 in Vincennes, IN.  William preceded her in death on August 30, 1995 following forty-seven years of marriage.

 Vereal will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, whose greatest joy was cherishing the time spent with her beloved family.  She delighted in spending time in the kitchen, preparing meals for her family, and had a special gift for cooking enough to feed a crowd.   Vereal loved shopping trips with her family and friends.  Before retiring, Vereal worked at Wabash General Hospital for twenty plus years.  She will be missed by her family and all who knew her.

 Vereal will be remembered by her five children, Fred Sutton, William (Mary) Sutton, Jeffrey (Missy) Sutton, Alice Jacobs and Jean Humphreys; many loved grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.    

 Vereal was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin Green and Margaret (Garold) Carter; husband, William R. Sutton; two grandsons; and one great great grandchild; son in law, Danny Humphreys; siblings, Vivian Hoehn and Charles Green.

Mary Jo Bolden, 90, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois passed away Thursday, February 27, 2025, at Oakview Nursing & Rehab.

Also surviving Mary Jo are 4 grandchildren, Clint Bolden, Brent Bolden, Branden Jaquemai, and Tracy Brainard; and 7 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward; 4 brothers; and 2 sisters.

Mary Jo worked at Potter & Brumfield for 40+ years as an assembler.

Delphia (Del) Mae McCormick, 89, of Grayville, IL passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at her home in Grayville surrounded by her loving family.

Per Delphia’s wishes, she will be cremated, and no formal service will be held

Delphia was born on September 6, 1935, in Grayville, IL to Ernest C. McKenzie and Ida M. (Mobley) McKenzie. She was born at home and delivered by her grandmother. She weighed 2 pounds, 2 ounces. Her mother kept her warm by putting her in a shoe box in the coal oven. She wore her dad’s handkerchiefs as a diaper and was not expected to live.

She spent most of her life caring for others as a home healthcare worker. She loved flowers and enjoyed being outside.

Delphia is survived by her 3 children: Sharon (James) Brendel, Rick A. McCormick, and Trina G. Robertson; 6 grandchildren: Sherry Brendel, Anthony (Brittany) Hoefling, Amanda Mofield, Krista McCormick, Amber McCormick, and Logan McCormick; 15 great-grandchildren: Brandon, Blaine, Braelyn, Landon, Saraphina, Malaya, Aleigha, Elijah, Jeremiah, Ayla, Kameron, Chace, Zander, Ellie, and one on the way; 1 sister and best friend, Zelma O’Neil; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers, Clyde (Jack), William, and Ezra (Earl) McKenzie; 2 granddaughters, Megan M. McCormick and Sarah L. Robertson; 1 grandson, Zachary (Zach) Robertson; and 1 great-grandson, DeAndre McCormick.

Donald (Don) Craig, 74

Donald (Don) Craig of Wabash County passed away on Tuesday, February 18 in Newburgh, Indiana. Don was born on February 2, 1951 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana to John and Doris (Chapman) Craig. Don earned his Master’s of Divinity in Pastoral Counseling from Lincoln Christian Seminary and, later in life, a Master’s in Education from Oakland City University. Don had a heart for helping others and loved both his patients and his students. 

Don married Sandra Shain in 1974 and began an almost 51 year journey with her. He is survived by his wife, Sandy, daughter Melissa (Nic) Conner, and son, Peter (Ashley) Craig. Also surviving are the loves of his life, his grandbabies: Craig Conner, Myles Conner, Deacon Conner, Harper Craig, and Millie Craig. Also surviving are his brother, Jim (Linda) Craig, sister, Jean (Bob) Guy, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant grandbaby, Aiden; brother, Richard Craig; and father-in-law Pete Shain.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, March 2 at Albion Presbyterian Church – 110 Elm St. - Albion, Illinois with visitation from 2 until 3 p.m. and a service following.

Charles W. “Chuck” Skidmore, 80

Charles W. “Chuck” Skidmore, 80, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away Sunday, February 23, 2025 at his residence.

Services for Chuck will be Thursday, February 27, 2025 at 12:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Short Cunningham Funeral Home. Visitation for family and friends will begin at 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon on February 27, 2025 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Lick Prairie Cemetery with full Military Honors.

Chuck was born on April 2, 1944 in Morgantown, West Virginia to Franklin Charles and Lillian (Morgan) Skidmore. He graduated University High School in Morgantown, West Virginia and served his country in the U.S. Army. He worked as the Wabash County Animal Control Officer.

He married Edna Mae Deisher on October 22, 1966 at Pleasant Grove Church. They had fifty-eight years together. To this union there were three children born, Deana (Jeff) LaVarier of Mt. Carnel, Shawn (Darin) Campbell of Mt. Carmel, and Jonathan Skidmore of Indianapolis, Indiana; grandchildren, Trent (Kaleigh) LaVarier, Taylor ( Kaeli) Lavarier, Connor (MyLeah) LaVarier, Dakota Campbell, Shealey Campbell; great grandchildren, Cash, Sawyer and Beau LaVarier. Also surviving are his brothers Harry (Cherrell) Skidmore of Pikeville, Kentucky and Rob Skidmore of Morgantown, West Virginia.

He was a member of Wabash County Quail Club, Wabash County Farm Bureau and Mt Carmel Ham Radio KB9KHB. Chuck was an avid coon hunter, enjoyed riding motorcycles and watching NASCAR races. He often traveled to visit family in West Virginia.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ward and his wife Barbara Skidmore and nephew Frankie Skidmore.
