Helen L. Gray, 90, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away on Friday, May 1, 2026, at her daughter’s home in Evansville, Indiana, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on December 19, 1935, in East Chicago, Indiana, the daughter of Wilbert and Helen (Centilli) White. Helen married John O. Gray, Sr., on January 17, 1953, in Whiting, Indiana, and together they enjoyed seventy-two years of marriage before his passing on June 3, 2025.
Helen will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who cherished her family above all else. She had a selfless heart and found true fulfillment in caring for others. Helen took great pride in her yard and found peace tending to her flower gardens. She enjoyed cooking meals for those she loved and was especially known for her thoughtful Christmas goodie bags. Helen had a special affection for animals; raising everything from chickens and peacocks to caring for her cats and dogs. In her quiet moments, she enjoyed relaxing and watching her favorite western shows. She will be missed by her family and friends.
Helen will be remembered by her daughter, Jennifer Gray of Evansville, IN; son, Jody Gray and wife, Cheryl of Bellmont, IL; three grandchildren, Jacqi (Matt) Garnett, Jason Gray, Jessica Gray; three great-grandchildren, Ella Scarber, William Scarber and Waylon Garnett; great-great grandchild, Elias Moten.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; brother, Dick White; sisters, Bettye Ferry, Shirley Smith and infant sister, Maryann White.
Family and friends are invited to gather for a Visitation from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., Thursday, May 7, 2026, in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home.
Funeral Services will be 1:00 p.m., Thursday, May 7, 2026, in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home with Pastor David Shain officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Cemetery.
