Norman E. Howell, 90, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 2, 1935, in Mount Carmel, Illinois, the son of Harry A. and Gladys (Shook) Howell. Norman married Rena Hampton on June 19, 1965, and together they enjoyed sixty years of marriage.
Norman loved his family dearly and treasured the time he spent with them. He was a devoted member of the Free Methodist Church, where his faith played a central role in his life. Throughout the years, he faithfully served his church as a Sunday School teacher, music director, and helped direct many Christmas plays. Norman dedicated thirty-five years to teaching Art at Edwards County High School, where he impacted the lives of countless students. He possessed a remarkable artistic talent, designing many signs and works of art throughout his life. Norman took great pride in his work, paying close attention to every detail, and deeply valued the friendships he formed while sharing his artistic gifts with others.
Norman will be remembered by his loving wife, Rena Howell; nieces, Glenda Niehaus, and Angela Adkins; nephew, Mark Cowling; many loved great nieces and nephews along with great-great nieces and nephews.
Norman was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Phyllis Cowling; brother, Glenn Howell.
Family and friends are invited to gather for a Visitation from 12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 16, 2026, in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home.
Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 16, 2026, in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home with Reverend Larry Detruf officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery.
