Bailey Expected To Announce Bid For Governor Tonight

State Sen. Darren Bailey could announce tonight whether he intends to run for Illinois governor. His political operation said tonight’s event in Effingham will be an “important announcement about the future of Illinois.” If he announces a bid for governor, he’d be the second Republican to officially toss his hat into the ring. Former state Sen. Paul Schimpf announced last week.

More Than 2,000 Vaccines Administered In Wabash County

Over 2,000 COVID vaccines have been administered so far by the Wabash County Health Department. In a written report submitted to the county board yesterday, health department administrator Judy Wissel said vaccine clinics will continue until all of the phases are covered.

Currently, those in Phase 1B can receive the vaccine. That includes first responders, corrections officers/inmates, ag workers and farmers, postal workers, manufacturing workers, grocery store workers, public transit workers, education workers, snow plow operators for units of government, and those working in shelters/adult day care.

Starting on the 25th, Wissel said the group will be expanded to include anyone 18 to 64 with a pre-existing health condition such as diabetes, cancer, COPD, hypertension, obesity, pregnancy, and other. You can call the health department for an appointment if you fall in any of those groups.

Another good note, Wissel said confirmed COVID cases are down in Wabash County, but the local positivity rate is at 9.4%.

Treasurer's Office Mails Delinquent Tax Notices

The Wabash County treasurer’s office yesterday mailed 700 certified delinquent tax notices. The 700 notices cost the county almost $7 each to mail and amount to $542,000 in tax monies still due. Treasurer Beverly McBride reported at yesterday’s county board meeting that $10,598,000 in property taxes has been collected so far which amounts to 95% that was levied. To keep your name out of the newspaper, taxes have to be paid by February 26th and McBride said the tax sale is set for March 19th. Also yesterday, McBride said her office issued the second distribution to local taxing bodies of just over $1.6 million.

Warmer Temps Could Cause Big Issues For County Roads

Temperatures tomorrow are expected to crack the freezing mark for the first time in two weeks. And while we’ll be enjoying the warmer temperatures that are expected to hit 50 next week, there will be some negative ramifications of melting over a foot of snow. Mike Wilson is a road district commissioner and he says roads out in the county will be in peril….

Wilson said now’s not the time for a leisurely country drive…

If we crack freezing tomorrow, the 10 day forecast has highs of at least 38 starting Sunday.

Attempted theft of a package results in arrest of Decker woman

On February 19, 2021, at 1:04 p.m. Gibson County Central Dispatch received a report of an individual attempting to take a package from a residence in the 1300 block of East 150 South. The reporting party was able to give central dispatch an accurate description of the suspects as well as a description of a Red Chevy Truck that picked them up as they attempted to flee the area. Deputy Jennifer Robb and Indiana State Trooper Jordan Lee arrived in the area before being given the description of the pickup but were able to notify other officers the direction that it was traveling. Sergeant Bruce Vanoven stopped a Red 2011 Chevy Silverado on Main Street across the street from the jail and upon approaching the vehicle a female later identified as 21-year-old Rosalea Landazuri stated that she had in fact touched the package. Deputy Jennifer Robb investigated the incident speaking to the victim who provided photos of the suspect as well as the vehicle they were picked up in. After collecting statements from the driver of the vehicle and the other female at the scene Deputy Robb placed Ms. Landazuri into custody. Ms. Landazuri was transported to the Gibson County Jail where she was charged with Theft and False Informing/Hindering Law Enforcement. She remains in custody on a $650 bond.

Assisting Deputy Robb in her investigation were officers with the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police, and Princeton Police Department.

All Criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
