Lady Rockets Advance In Regional

On Tuesday, January 9th, the St. Mary’s Lady Rockets traveled to Jasper Grade School (Fairfield) to take on the Kell-Farrington Lady Indians in first round play of the SIJHSAA Region 8 Tournament. St. Mary’s advanced to the second round of the Tournament by defeating Kell-Farrington, 45 – 22.

St. Mary’s led 10 - 9 at the end of the first quarter; 26 - 15 at halftime; and 39 - 19 at the end of the third quarter. Mady Young and Savannah Zimmerman scored 16 points each to lead St. Mary’s in scoring. Olivia Stinson added 9 points, Emma Keepes 2 points, and Lindy Rafferty 2 points. Also seeing playing time were Maleah Armstrong, Eden Wankel, Lauren Hall, Anna Gill, Lexi Stevens, Olivia Trimble, and Nevada Brown. Frey and Knight each scored 6 points for the Lady Indians.

St. Mary’s will play Bluford in the second-round of the SIJHSAA Regional Tournament on Friday, January 12th, at 6pm at Jasper Grade School. Bluford upset the number one seeded Jasper to advance to Friday’s game.

Ticket Info For CWCIT

The 39th Annual Carmi-White County Invitational Tournament will be held on January 15, 17, 19, and 20, 2018. The participating teams are Carmi-White County, Fairfield, Harrisburg, Mt. Carmel, Edwards County and Mt. Vernon, IN. This will be a six-team round robin tournament with each team playing five games.

There will be three games each session, with 2 sessions on Saturday, January 20th. Games will begin at 5:30, 7:00 and 8:30 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Saturday games will begin at 10:00 am, 11:30 am, 1:00 pm, 5:00 pm, 6:30 pm and 8:00 pm. The doors will open 45 minutes before each session.

CWCHS fans who have reserved chairback seats will be given the opportunity to reserve their seats for $5.00 per seat per session. These tickets may be picked up in the high school office on Thursday and Friday, January 11 and 12, between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Chairback seats that are not reserved by their holder will be sold to the public at the south gate only for $5.00 per seat per session. General admission seats will be $5.00 per session for adults and $2.00 per session for students.

Allendale Falls To Olney St. Joe

On Monday, January 8th, the Allendale Yellow Jackets traveled to Cisne for consolation bracket play in the WEAA Conference Tournament.  The Yellow Jackets fell to St. Joe-Olney by the final score of 51-24.  Scoring for the Yellow Jackets were:  Bryce Lane with 8 points, JD Bowser with 7 points, Trentin Casburn with 4 points, Kollin Kelsey with 4 points, and Matthew Jackson with 1 point.  In the 3-point contest, JD Bowser also bowed out of the competition with a solid effort, but fell a couple of shots made short.  JD finished in the top 8 out of 20 competitors in the WEAA Conference 3-point shoot-out.

The Yellow Jackets A-team is now 4-11 on the season.  Next up:  Thursday, January 11th at Geff for C-team, B-team, and A-team action beginning at 5:15 pm.

WVC Sweeps Rend Lake

The winning streaks continue for the Wabash Valley College basketball teams. Saturday at Rend Lake College the women picked up their 8th in a row and the men won their 5th. The Warriors are home Wednesday against Lewis and Clark at 7:30 while the Lady Warriors are on the road at Volunteer State.

The Lady Warriors improved to 13-1 and 5—0 in the GRAC with a 131 to 44 win over Rend Lake. That is the largest winning margin ever for a WVC basketball team 87 points. It was all over in the first five minutes of the game. At the end of the first quarter WVC was up 36-10. Head coach Luke Scheidecker had six Lady Warriors in double figures led by Mariah McCully with 31 points followed by Ashley Moore with 20, Marie Hunter with 18, Ruby Angok had 16, Alexis Thomas had 15 and Frednesha Adams had 11.

The Warriors came up with a big win on the road. Trailing 41 to 35 at half time they exploded in the second half to get their 9th win of the season. They are now 9-5 and 3-2 in the GRAC while R-L falls to 3-10 and 1-4.

Four players led the comeback in the half with Marcus Garrett leading the way with 18 of his game high 23 points. Anthony Christian would get 11 of his 12 points and Tyresse Williford would get nine of his 12. Josh Thomas would get seven of his 13 in the second half. Williford had four threes in the game and Marcel Cherry would have two all in the first half when he scored his 8 points.

Tyra Leads IU Past Purdue

From IU Athletics:

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.  – Indiana Women's Basketball jumped out to a 13-point lead after the first quarter and never looked back in a 72-54 win over Purdue on Saturday at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
 
Senior guard Tyra Buss led with 19 points, a game-high nine assists and tied a season-high five steals as Indiana (8-9, 1-3 B1G) shot a season-high 58.3 percent in the victory. Four players scored in double figures, with junior forward Kym Roysteradded 17 points on 7-for-12 shooting and tied a team-high six rebounds. Senior forward Amanda Cahill followed with 16 points, six rebounds, six assists and tied a season-high four blocks.
 
Freshman guard Jaelynn Penn chipped in 11 points and four rebounds as the Hoosiers scored 46 of its 72 points in the paint on the day and dished out 18 assists on 28 made shots. IU narrowly won the margin on the boards, 29-27, and shot 42.9 percent from the 3-point line.
 
Purdue shot just 34 percent and 12.5 percent from 3-point range and had just five points in the opening quarter, the fewest points in any quarter by an opponent this season. With the win, Indiana picks up its fourth-straight home win in the series as the two teams meet for the rematch and Barn Burner Trophy game at Mackey Arena on Feb. 12.
 
After a 6-5 lead for the Hoosiers with 4:31 to play in the opening frame, the Hoosiers would close the half on a 12-0 run. The run was sparked by a steal from Buss on the Purdue inbound, who tossed to Cahill in the lane. Back-to-back buckets from Buss with 1:56 left made it 14-5 lead and a pair of free throws by Royster capped off the opening quarter up 18-5 as IU shot 63.6 percent to Purdue's 16.7 percent.
 
The run would last into the early minutes of the second quarter, as Purdue went over six minutes without a point. The Boilermakers (10-7, 1-2 B1G) would only get within 12 for the rest of the half, as Cahill's bucket with 2:52 remaining doubled up the score once again as Indiana led 32-17 at the break.
 
IU would maintain its lead in the third, shooting 50 percent with Cahill and Royster each putting in five of their points in the frame to go up 50-34. It was lights out in the fourth as Indiana increased its lead to 24 as it shot a game-high 81.8 percent to close out the game.

"I'm really pleased with our group and how we approached this game. I thought their focus was tremendous in the locker room prior to tipoff. We had a really short turn around unlike Purdue, who had a week. We only had a day-and-a-half to prepare for a really good Purdue team. I thought our focus was great.  Coach (Rhet) Wierzba did a great job making sure that we were prepared. I thought are kids executed a lot of their tendencies. There are a lot of tendencies that the kids have and I thought they did a solid job of locking in to their tendencies and trying to take those away. All of them, there isn't one kid that I can pull out and say she did such a tremendous job. I thought collectively our basketball team together did a really solid job defensively. For us to shoot the ball at 58 percent for the game, that's really good thing. I don't know that we have done that all year. You have to be able to play both sides of the ball, and I thought we did that almost for the entire 40 minutes today."

  • With the 72-54 victory over Purdue, Indiana has now won four straight over the Boilermakers in Bloomington.
  • The Hoosiers used an 18-0 in the first half to build a 24-5 lead over Purdue. Indiana led 18-5 at the end of the first quarter. The five points is the fewest they have allowed to an opponent in a quarter this season. Indiana held Purdue to 2-of-12 (16.7 percent) from the field in the opening quarter. For the game Purdue shot 17-of-50 (34 percent).
  • From the 4:31 mark of the first quarter until the 8:02 mark of the second quarter, Indiana held Purdue scoreless, a time period of six minutes and 29 seconds.

  • Senior forward Amanda Cahill scored 16 points and added six rebounds and six assists. Cahill moved into 10th on the Hoosiers all-time career scoring list and now has 1,551 points. With her six rebounds Cahill now has 962 career rebounds and is nine rebounds from moving into the top three on the Hoosiers all-time list for career rebounding.

Yellow Jackets Stung At WEAA Tourney

On Thursday, January 4th, the Allendale Yellow Jackets traveled to Cisne for WEAA Conference Tournament action against the #1 seeded Jasper Polecats.  Jasper took control early and never looked back, defeating the Yellow Jackets 60-20.  Scoring for the Yellow Jackets were:  Owen Gher with 10 points, Trent Casburn with 4 points, Bryce Lane with 3 points, and Kollin Kelsey with 3 points.  The Yellow Jackets are now 4-10 on the season.

Next up:  Monday, January 8th, at Cisne High School against St. Joe in the consolation bracket of the WEAA Conference Tournament at 6 pm.  In the 3-point contest, JD Bowser tied for first with 7 made and will shoot again before Monday's game.

WVC Starts 2nd Half of Season With Win

When you are hot you are hot. Last night at the Spencer Sports Center the Wabash Valley College Warriors improved to 8-5 with a 94 to 83 win over Three Rivers Community College. The Raiders are now 6-7 but was 10-2 before they had to forfeit four games for using an ineligible player.

The Warriors got off to a great start hitting 9 of 12 three pointers in the first half. The team played maybe their best 34 minutes of basketball this season. The Raiders kept playing hard and after trailing by as many as 28 points early in the second half would close the gap late to within 12 points. In the last four minutes and 20 seconds the Raiders would out score the Warriors 12 to 1. Five different Warriors would hit from behind the arc lead by Marcus Garrett who was four for four, Jalen Newsom was 4 for 7 and Tyressee Williford, Cam Gross, and Marcel Cherry each had two threes. Garrett was the leading scorer with 24 points followed by Williford and Newsome each had 14 Jordon Bell had 11 and Austin Trice had 10. Trice also had a double-double with 11 rebounds. Mike Carpenter got good offensive effort from his team as well as defensively for a total team effort in this first win of the second semester WVC has now won four games in a row.

Three Rivers had three players in double figures lead by Charles Wilson with 24, Aidan Saunders off the bench with 20 and Keiondre Jefferson had 19.

Now the Warriors will go into Great Rivers Athletic Conference play. Saturday they will travel to Rend Lake for afternoon games

Allendale Eliminates SMS From WEAA Tourney

On Wednesday, January 3rd, the 8-seed Allendale Yellow Jackets took on the 9-seed St. Mary's Rockets at Cisne in the WEAA Conference Tournament.  After one quarter, St. Mary's led the Yellow Jackets 7-5.  At halftime, Allendale was leading the Rockets 17-9.  After three quarters, the Yellow Jackets expanded their lead to 31-21.  This led to a final score of 39-25, with Allendale defeating St. Mary's and moving on in WEAA Conference Tournament play.  

Scoring for the Yellow Jackets were:  JD Bowser with 11 points, Owen Gher with 11 points, Bryce Lane with 10 points, Trentin Casburn with 3 points, Kollin Kelsey with 2 points, and Taylor Woods with 2 points.

Scoring for the Rockets were:  Gehrig Jones with 7 points, Steven Haase with 7 points, Elliott Acree with 7 points, and Jesse Brogan with 4 points.

The Allendale Yellow Jackets are now 4-9 on the season and will take on Jasper tomorrow night at Cisne in the WEAA Conference Tournament at 7:15 pm.  JD Bowser  (Allendale) and Steven Haase (St. Mary's) will shoot in the 3-point competition prior to the game tomorrow night, as they finished first and second respectively tonight.

Tyra Poised To Break All Time Indiana Scoring Record Tonight

Tonight could be the night Tyra Buss breaks the all-time Indiana scoring record as the Hoosiers play at Penn State. Game time is 6pm and will be televised via BTN Plus.

Senior guard Tyra Buss broke her first school record against Virginia on Dec. 18 when she made six free throws to be the program's all-time leader in free throws made (516). In addition, she set another school record at Yale, getting to the line three times to own the record in free throws attempted (690). She is quickly approaching the school scoring record, holding 1,904 points and needs just 14 points to break Denise Jackson's record of 1,917 points set in 1983-84.

Warriors Back In Action Tonight

It is back to the hardwood for the Wabash Valley College Warrior basketball team Wednesday evening when they host Three Rivers Community College from Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Tipoff is set for 7:30. Both the Lady Warriors and Warriors will be back in Great Rivers Athletic Conference action on Saturday when they will travel to Rend Lake College for afternoon games.

Three Rivers comes in with a 6-6 record on the season. Their last game was against John Logan that they lost at home 95 to 81. The Raiders have lost twice to Logan this year. They are a young team but it is built around their three key sophomores. Aidan Saunders a 6-4 guard leads the team in scoring with 17.1 ppg and 6.4 rebounds. Jeffery Porter is a six foot guard who scores 11.9 ppg and 5.9 rebounds. Post player Ludy Kayouloud from Paris France is teams leading rebounder with 7.9 a game.

WVC comes into the game with a 7-5 record and on a three game win streak. Sophomore Austin Trice averages 14.3 ppg and also in rebounds with 12 a game. Tyressee Williford averages 13.1 ppg and Marcus Garrett is at 11.7 ppg. The Warriors are averaging 90.5 ppg and allowing their opponents only 72.8 ppg

SMS Lady Rockets vs. New Hope

On Tuesday, January 2nd, the St. Mary’s Lady Rockets traveled to New Hope Grade School to take on the Lady Panthers. In the 8th grade game, New Hope defeated St. Mary’s 33 - 26. At the end of the first quarter, it was tied 6 - 6; St. Mary’s led 13 – 7 at halftime; and 21 - 20 at the end of the third quarter. New Hope secured the win by outscoring St. Mary’s 13 – 5 in the fourth quarter. Mady Young scored 9 points to lead St. Mary’s in scoring. Olivia Stinson added 8 points, Emma Keepes 6 points, and Savannah Zimmerman 3 points. Emma Frymire led New Hope with 13 points.

St. Mary’s defeated New Hope in the 7th grade game, 32 - 16. The Lady Rockets led 8 - 4 at the end of the first quarter; 20 - 8 at halftime; and 28 - 14 at the end of the third quarter. Mady Young led St. Mary’s in scoring with 10 points. Eden Wankel added 6 points, Lexi Stevens 6 points, Nora Jones 4 points, Lauren Hall 2 points, Anna Gill 2 points, and Lindy Rafferty 2 points. Also seeing playing time were Olivia Trimble, Nevada Brown, Lily Keepes, Sarah McCorkle, Kali Walker, Madison Stevens, and Ava Turner. Chloe Rush scored 6 points for the Lady Panthers.

St. Mary’s 6th and 8th grade teams will travel to Columbia, Illinois, this weekend (January 5th – 7th) to participate in the Belleville Diocesan Tournament.

Coach Logan Crum Comments

Very Good week for us as we wrestled some very good competition. We were without Chevvy Wood for this week as he has been sick with extreme flu. I thought that we wrestled well to finish  6-3 on the week at Springfield. We are now on our mid season break in which the kids have a few days off to recuperate and get ready for the second half of the season and the post season. Regionals is a little over a month away. Allendale vs. New Hebron Basketball

On Monday, December 18th, the Allendale Yellow Jackets traveled to take on non-conference foe New Hebron at Lincoln Trail College in Robinson.  In the B-game, the Yellow Jackets defeated New Hebron 32-31.  Scoring for Allendale were:  Matthew Jackson with 9 points, Wyatt Gher with 8 points, Kollin Kelsey with 7 points, JD Bowser with 4 points, and Trentin Casburn with 4 points.  The B-team is now 5-5 on the season.

In the A-game, New Hebron defeated Allendale 31-20.  Scoring for the Yellow Jackets were:  Bryce Lane with 7 points, Kollin Kelsey with 7 points, Wyatt Gher with 4 points, and JD Bowser with 2 points.  The A-team is now 3-9 on the season.

Next up for the Yellow Jackets:  WEAA Conference Tournament at Cisne.  January 3rd will be a 6:00 pm game against St. Mary's.
