Bonnie Jane Johnson, 85

Bonnie Jane Johnson, 85, of Allendale, Illinois, passed away Saturday, December 30, 2023, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Indiana, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on November 21, 1938, in Allendale, Illinois, the daughter of Odis and Geneva (Gher) Mattox. She married Jackie Wayne “Jack” Johnson on June 4, 1962, and they enjoyed fifty-nine years of marriage until his passing on July 20, 2021.

Bonnie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who was always looking out for others. She was a 4-H leader for many years. Bonnie enjoyed knitting, ceramics and doing counted cross stitch. Bonnie and Jack enjoyed vacationing in South Carolina and visiting their daughter and her family in Florida. She was a member of the Wabash Presbyterian Church at Orio, and she will by dearly missed by all who knew her.

Bonnie is survived by her daughter, Cheryl (Jabez) Coggan III of Cocoa Florida; grandchildren, James (Samantha) Johnson, Alan Johnson, Jaclyn (Zack) Meade, Maia (Ruben) Marquez and Jabez Coggan IV; great grandchildren, Braxton, Benjamin, Lucy, Catherine, Madilyn, Aria, and Eliza; daughter in law, Stella Johnson; brothers, Bill (Peggy) Mattox, Mike Mattox; sisters, Coralee, (Delmar) Skeen, Candace Adair; many loved nieces and nephews.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband, Jack; one son, Eric Wayne Johnson; one brother, James Mattox.

Dr. Gerald W. Burkett, 96

Dr. Gerald W. Burkett, 96, died December 28, 2023, at North River Health Campus in Evansville, Indiana, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born July 5, 1927, at Keenes, Illinois, the son of Ernest D. and Nettie (Mills) Burkett, who preceded him in death, as did three infant brothers.

He married artha Sue Collins on September 13, 1950, in Evansville, Indiana. She preceded him in death on May 17, 1994. He married Lois Ann Wahler on December 26, 1999, in Mount Carmel and she preceded him in death on November 21, 2020. He was preceded in death, also, by a brother Ernest V. Burkett and sister Majel M. Worley both of Indianapolis.

He is also survived by two sons, Stephen G. (Donna) Burkett of Haubstadt, Indiana, and Daniel C. (Wanda) Burkett of Richmond, Texas. Loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a great-great grandchild also survive.

Dr. Burkett served aboard ships in the Pacific late during World War II and graduated from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry in 1952 and practiced in Mount Carmel for 43 years before retiring with Dr. G. Andrew Fischer continuing the practice. He was a life member of the Illinois State Dental Society and American Dental Association.

Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Friday, January 5, 2024, at Short-Cunningham Funeral Home with burial in Highland Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until time-of-service Friday, January 5, 2024, at Short-Cunningham Funeral Home.

Nicholas P. “Nick” Smith, 73

Nicholas P. “Nick” Smith, 73, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at North River Nursing Home in Evansville, Indiana surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 5, 1950 in Princeton, Indiana, the son of Harold L. and Iris (Stalions) Smith. He was a graduate of Mount Carmel High School Class of 1969. Nick faithfully served his Country in the United States Army.

Nick loved his family and treasured his time spent with them. He was lovingly referred to by his grandchildren as “Pa Nick”. Nick was a true outdoorsman; where he enjoyed fishing, bird hunting and mushroom hunting. He also liked working in his garden and sharing his harvest with family and friends. Nick was a sports fan and his favorite teams were the St. Louis Cardinals and the Fighting Illini. He also enjoyed golfing when able. Nick will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Nick will be remembered by his two sons, Levitt (Megan) Smith, and Cole Smith; grandchildren, Cameron and Jaxson Smith; four brothers, Christopher (Laura) Smith, Steve (Connie) Smith, Timothy Smith, and Dave (Debbie) Smith; many loved cousins, nieces and nephews.

Nick was preceded in death by his parents; and sister-in-law, Paula Smith.

Richard Borgra, 87

Richard Borgra, 87, of West Salem, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2023, holding the hand of his only child. He was born May 5, 1936, the oldest son of Barney and Frances (Fornengo) Borgra.

Richard was a resident of West Salem, Illinois since 1960, where he raised a daughter, Jennifer, with his wife Bessie Borgra.

He was known for his infectious laugh, bright smile, and sunny disposition. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and friend. He was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. In his early years he enjoyed coaching little league, woodworking, hunting, and bowling with several awards to his credit. At age 35 he taught himself to play golf, it was a passion that would always be with him. He belonged to Mount Carmel Municipal Golf Course for weekly league play and any other time he could. He was an avid gardener, loved to feed the birds, loved food, playing chess, he dabbled in painting, cooking and even wine making (it was an epic disaster, but he loved to tell the tale of making wine).

Richard was a devout Catholic and attended Saint Sebastian Church in Mt. Carmel, Illinois. He was proud to have served in the Marines, graduated from SIU Carbondale with an Industrial Engineering Degree, moved to West Salem, and worked at Champion Labs from 1961-2006. He loved his community, served throughout the years on many boards, West Salem Village Board, Police Board and Southeastern Illinois Agency on Aging. He was a proud supporter of the West Salem Firemen and the Village Café and Homestead Vineyards.

Survivors include daughter, Jennifer Borgra of Evansville, Indiana; brothers, Joseph (Carol) Borgra, Thomas (Paula) Borgra, of Christopher, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his beloved grand-dogs, ReyRey and Roxie. Richard was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Bessie Borgra and his parents, Barney and Frances Borgra.

A Celebration of Richard will be held Saturday, December 30, 2023, at Saint Sebastian Church, Mt. Carmel, IL.

Visitation from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Funeral Mass at 12:00 PM, burial immediately following at the Saint Sebastian Church Cemetery.

Sharon Kay Schafer, 79

Sharon Kay Schafer, 79, entered eternal life into the loving arms of Jesus on December 24, 2023. She was born on March 29, 1944 in Mount Carmel, Illinois, to the late parents of Virgil & Evelyn Walker. She met her husband Ed Schafer while attending Allendale High School.

The two moved to St. Louis where Sharon worked in sales with Allied Van Lines. She was best known for her amazing candy making which led her to open and operate the well-known Paradise Candies on Main Street in St. Charles Missouri.

She was an active member of the Historic Main Street Preservation Society in St. Charles along with her and her husband owning their lovely Bed & Breakfast in St. Charles. They retired in Branson Missouri to be closer to their grandchildren. Sharon was an active member of the social committee with Sunset Cove in Branson, MO. During her younger years she enjoyed playing the piano and organ at the St. Peters MO Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Tammy Bracker and husband, Dan; granddaughters, Abby Wright and husband, Tyler, Hannah Kelley and husband, Kole; great grandchildren, Kayda Faith Wright, Kynlee Grace Wright, and Kasen Ray Kelley; brothers, Richard (Debbie) Walker and Greg Walker; sisters, Linda Bates, Brenda (Harry) Hottel & Debbie (Greg) Smith.

Sharon was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Schafer; brothers, Randy Walker, and Jim Walker; sister, Judy Hunt.

Graveside Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, December 28, 2023 at Allendale Cemetery. Immediately following, Sharon’s life and legacy will be honored with a sweet celebration of dessert and fellowship at the Allendale Ruritan Building.

Cynthia Ann (Bailey) Carneal, 66

Cynthia A. Carneal, 66, of Allendale, Illinois, passed away Saturday, December 23, 2023, at Wabash General Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on July 1, 1957, in Mount Carmel, Illinois, the daughter of Roland Bailey Jr., and Frances (Whitten) Bailey. She married Roger Carneal on October 16, 2004, and they have celebrated their marriage for nineteen years.

Cindy was a life-long member of Adams Corner United Methodist Church where she was a youth group leader, taught Sunday school, and enjoyed helping during Vacation Bible School week. Cindy collected antiques and would often shop yard sales. She loved to cook big meals, even if it was just a dinner for two. She was proud of the flowers she grew, some of which were inherited from family members. Cindy was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. The grandchildren and her dog Sadie held a very special place in her heart. Cindy will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Cindy leaves behind her beloved husband, Roger; three sons, Matt Potts, Chris (Samantha) Potts, Phillip Potts; one daughter, Melanie (Amanda) Potts; five grandchildren, Courtney, Trenton, Levi, Stetson, and Madeleine Potts; four brothers, Roland (Nancy) Bailey III, Jim Bailey, David (Dixie) Bailey, Bill Bailey; brother-in-law, Ron Witsman; several loved nieces and nephews.

Cindy was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Lorrie Witsman; daughter-in-law, Michelle Wilson Potts; niece, Ashley Witsman; sisters-in-law, Vickie Bailey, and Bonnie Bailey.

Ivan K. Dill, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois passed away Tuesday, December 19, 2023, in St. Clair County, Illinois.

Ivan was born August 23, 1977, in San Bernadino, California, the son of Davey R. Dill and Frances Shaffer Potter.

Service will be held Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Short-Cunningham Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 9, 2024.

He attended Mt. Carmel High School and worked as a boilermaker.

He is survived by his mother, Frances of Nevada; children, Shane Dill of Grayville, Illinois, Tyler Dill of Grayville, Illinois, Daniel Dill of Hardin, Kentucky, Shelby Moore of Mt. Danny Leach, 84

Danny Leach, 84, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away on Sunday, December 17, 2023 at Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville, Indiana surrounded by his family. He was born on June 1, 1939 in Wabash County, Illinois, the son of Howard and Norma (Brown) Leach. Danny married Edna Riggs on October 24, 1958 and together they enjoyed sixty-five years of marriage centered around their family.

Danny will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart and he always looked forward to holding the new additions to his family. In his free time, Danny liked being outdoors, rabbit hunting and fishing with family and friends. He could often be found tinkering around in his shop. During family gatherings, Danny always enjoyed preparing the main course. His favorite meal when he was out was always catfish.

Danny was a hard worker where he spent many years in the heating and air business. He worked for Sharp and Williams, Jeff Parker before he went out on his own. He retired from the Mount Carmel Water Department. During his working career, Danny made many friendships. Danny was a member of Mount Carmel Church of Christ. Danny never met a stranger; always had a friendly smile and a wave for everyone. He will be missed by his family and all who knew him.

Michael Steinker Sr., 69

Michael Steinker Sr., 69, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Saturday, December 16, 2023, at home.  He was born on December 30, 1953, in Elgin, Illinois, the son of Harry and June (Anderson) Steinker.  He married Brenda Green on August 6, 1977, and they have been celebrating their marriage together for forty-six years.

Mike earned associate degrees in both computer programming and supervision which led him to his career working with Revcor, Champion Laboratories and TWA.  He enjoyed doing home improvement projects around the house.  Mike liked to watch sports on television and was an avid Bears and Cubs fan.  He enjoyed spending time with his family and playing games.  Mike will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Mike leaves behind his beloved wife, Brenda; mother, June; children, Amanda Steinker, Melissa (Adam) Gilil, Michael (Jillian) Steinker, Jr.; grandchildren, Austin (Brooklynn) Rodriguez, Faith Rodriguez, Aaron Gilil, Lillian Steinker, Hailey Gilil; bonus grandchildren, Zackary Stotlar and Kracell Guard.

Mike was preceded in death by his father; one sister, Deborah Steinker.

Bernita Fay Morgan, 69

Bernita Fay Morgan, 69, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at Wabash General Hospital in Mount Carmel.  She was born on August 17, 1954 in Carmi, Illinois, the daughter of Alfred and Juanita H. (Goldman) Smith, Jr.  Bea married Roger Keele and following his passing she married Eddie J. Morgan on December 30, 1987 and together they enjoyed twenty-five years of marriage until his passing in April 2013.

 Bea will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother who loved her family dearly.  She had a very caring spirit and would do anything for anybody.  She worked for Wabash District 348 for thirty years.  In her many years of service, Ms. Bea was an all-around dedicated employee. She wore many hats in her day and was always willing to step in where needed. She was a bus driver, recess aid, worked in the kitchen, and concession stand and subbed whenever and wherever needed.  Bea also served as Truancy Officer for the district. She was truly an Aces fan. She lived in breathed for all Aces sports. She was the Lady Aces basketball manager, water girl, team mom and so much more. She drove the bus, attended all sporting events, drove the cheer leaders and cheered on the band.  She will be greatly missed at Wabash District 348.

 Bea was an active member at Parkview Christian Church and dearly loved helping anyway she could at the church.  In her free time, Bea enjoyed woodworking and making benches for others.  Above all, Bea treasured her time with family and will be missed by all who knew her.

 Bea will be remembered by her son, Shawn Keele and wife, Brandy of Mount Carmel; two daughters, Twila Parker and husband Billy of Louisville, Kentucky and Candi Kissel and husband, Matt of Mount Carmel; step-children, Mike Morgan, Lisa Fannon, and Jamie Morgan; many loved grandchildren, and great grandchildren; brother, Darrell Smith; sister, Juanita Casseday; several nieces and nephews.

 Bea was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Roger Keele and Eddie Morgan.

Lisa Michelle (Witsman) Wilkinson, 63

Lisa Michelle (Witsman) Wilkinson, 63, of Allendale, Illinois, passed away December 5, 2023, at her residence.

Services will be held Saturday, December 9, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. noon, in the Chapel of Short-Cunningham Funeral home. Entombment will follow at the Highland Memorial Garden Mausoleum.

Visitation will be Saturday, December 9, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.

Lisa was born to the late M. R. “Jake” and Barbara Jean (Harl) Witsman on November 8, 1960, in Evansville, Indiana. Surviving are her significant other Gene Sanders of 33 years, her three children: Jacob (Lori) Wilkinson, Mount Carmel, Illinois, Clyde (Jaymie) Wilkinson, Allendale, Illinois, and Ashley (Jeff Doan) Wilkinson, Allendale, Illinois, and brother Scott K. Witsman, Mount Carmel, Illinois. Also surviving are her grandchildren: Logan Wilkinson, Lonna Wilkinson, and Raiden Doan. Lisa is preceded in death by her parents.

She attended Trinity United Methodist Church. Lisa enjoyed her time spent at the river camp. She adored the Holidays. Lisa thoroughly enjoyed going to Antique and Consignment shops. She was a previous member of Job’s Daughters. Lisa’s family meant the world to her and was the most important part of her life. Lisa never met a stranger and was very outgoing.

Glen A. Wiseman, 62

Glen A. Wiseman, 62, of Browns passed away on Wednesday, December 6th, 2023 at his home.

He was born on April 18th, 1961 in Mt. Carmel to William and Ruth K (Marriott) Wiseman.

Glen married his wife Michelle (Compton) on July 12th, 2004 in Henderson, Kentucky.

Glen retired from the Illinois Department of Transportation after 20 years of service. He had proudly served in the U.S. Army for a little over six and a half years. He was a member of the Hope Community Church of Princeton, Indiana, the Olney chapter of the Christian Motorcyclist Association, and The Great Banquet Community.

He is preceded in death by his parents Bill and Ruth Wiseman, special niece Chelsi Eileen, brother-in-law Cotten Maginn, mother-in-law Georgia King, and 4 grand babies.

Glen is survived by his wife Michelle, Children: Christina (Chris) Ray, Bethanie Wiseman and fiancée Ryan Hardy, Lisa Wiseman, and Andrew (Allie) Silvernale, 11 grandchildren: Christian, Nakiya, Jakob, Olivia, Elizabeth, Oliver, Iris, Tyson, Dylan, Micah, and Noah, 2 great grandchildren: Cohen and Colt, 1 brother: George Wiseman, 2 sisters: Kathy Maginn and Sara Chiarello, numerous nieces and nephews, and beloved dog Zausk.

Paula Tarpy, 67

Paula Tarpy, 67, of Allendale, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2023 in Clinton County, Illinois following a car accident.  She was born on January 26, 1956 in Mount Carmel, the daughter of Paul and Dorothy (Corri) Schafer.

Paula will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and sister.  She never met a stranger; was always willing to listen while helping others.  Paula was very compassionate and loved caring for others as a Registered Nurse.  She loved to have fun and always enjoyed shopping.  Paula graduated from Allendale High School and when her boys were little, she attended the First Christian Church in Allendale.  Paula was young at heart and had a witty sense of humor that led to a unique perception of the world.  Paula loved waterskiing and had a gift for teaching others the sport.  She will be dearly missed by her family and all who knew her.

Paula will be remembered by her two sons, JP Davis and Justin Davis; four grandchildren, Draven Davis, Riah Davis, Jace Kieffer, and Reagan Davis; two brothers, Robert Schafer and Mike Schafer.  Paula was preceded in death by her parents; the love of her life, John Forrest Davis; and her beloved dog, Mookie.

Eddie L. Odom, 72

Eddie L. Odom, 72, of Carmi, Illinois, formerly of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Sunday, December 3, 2023, at Heart-to-Heart Hospice Center in Evansville, Indiana. He was born on December 17,1950, in Mount Carmel, the son of William “Bill” and Estel (Goldman) Odom. He married Laura Heilmann on March 20,1999, in Mount Carmel, and they have enjoyed twenty-four years of marriage.

Ed worked many years as a carpenter. In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time outdoors, fishing, camping, and boating on the river. He was a NASCAR fan and liked WWE Wrestling. Most of all, Ed enjoyed spending time with his family. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Ed leaves behind his beloved wife, Laura; stepson, James Heilmann; daughters, Tammy Dixon, Teresa Chaves; grandson, Salem Mullins; brother, David (Margaret) Odom; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; son, Shawn Odom; brothers, William “Billy” Odom, Ronald Odom, Donald Odom; and sister, Myrtle Rose Odom.

Donald R Bowen, 84

Donald R Bowen, 84, of West Salem, IL passed away on Thursday, November 30th, 2023 at his home.

He was born September 2nd, 1939 in West Salem, IL to Edgar and Sarah Margaret (Hicks) Bowen.

Don married his wife Jean on September 1st, 1961 in West Salem, IL.

Don was a livestock and grain farmer and had previously been a semi-truck driver for Champion Labs for 33 years. He dearly loved watching over his cattle and hauling livestock. Don loved his family and adored his great-grandchildren. He enjoyed visiting with family and solving the world’s problems with his coffee time friends. Don was a member of the Little Wabash United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents Edgar and Sarah Margaret Bowen and granddaughter Ashley Bosecker.

Don is survived by his wife Jean Bowen, son Rob Bowen, daughters; Cheryl Ray and Marsha Bosecker, 2 grandchildren; Casey, and Darus, and great-grandchildren; Cooper and Ezra.

Visitation will be held at the West Salem Zion Church on Tuesday, December 5th, 2023, from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. with funeral services on Wednesday, December 6th, 2023 at 10 a.m. followed by interment at Moravian Cemetery.

David Augustine, 75

Our beloved brother, uncle and father, David W Augustine, passed peacefully Friday, November 17, 2023, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Evansville, IN at the age of 75.

David was born on August 27th, 1948, in Salina, Kansas.

David proudly served in the United States Army from 1970 to 1972, and then fulfilled his obligation in the Army Reserves until 1976.

David worked for Caterpillar Tractor Company for many years but decided to return to college where he graduated from The State of New York earning a Bachelor of Science Degree. Immediately after graduation he passed his CPA Exam (on his first attempt). He worked for the Internal Revenue Service for several years. David spent the next 26 years as an entrepreneur - working at, owning and operating H & R Block offices. [At the time of his death, he still owned and operated two locations.]

He is survived by his brother, Douglas and Grace (Narve) Augustine of Marquette Hts, IL.; sister Gay (Marshall) Bowlin of Benton, IL.; daughters, Amber Augustine and Zena Rosenberger, nieces and nephews; Charles and Catharine (Augustine) Brisby, Joseph and Robin Augustine, James and Dana Augustine, Jeff and Adena (Bowlin) Clark.; and great nephews Caleb Augustine, Henry Augustine and Louis Augustine.

He was preceded in death by his loving mother and father, Wilma (Eldridge) Marshall and Jimmy Marshall of Zeigler, IL, as well as many uncles, aunts, and cousins.

Services will be as follows:  Visitation on Friday December 1st, 2023, at Leffler Funeral Home in Benton, IL from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Burial with Military Honors by the Benton American Legion Post #280, V.F.W. Post #2671 and the Army National Guard will follow at the Masonic & Oddfellow Cemetery, of Benton. 

The family prefers memorial contributions be made to the Benton American Legion Post #280 or the Benton V.F.W. Post #2671 and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Dolores R. Elliott, 83

Dolores R. Elliott, 83, of Olney, IL, passed from this world to her heavenly home on Saturday, November 18, 2023.

She was born on September 1, 1940, in Cowling, IL, to the late Leo and Caradena (nee Stadler) Higginson. On December 30, 1961, Dolores married Drue Elliott in Cowling, IL.

Dolores had a love for hats and jewelry, amassing quite a collection throughout her life. She enjoyed watching wildlife from her window and playing with her grandchildren. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Dolores will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Drue Elliott; daughters, Michelle R. (Michael) Keepes, Mt. Carmel, IL, Angelique L. (Jon) Waxler, Olney, IL; grandchildren, Sara E. Keepes, Evansville, IN, Nicolas D. Waxler, Olney, IL, Madison R. (Doug) Muhs, Olney, IL; great granddaughter, Stella K. Muhs, Olney, IL; and favorite nephew and niece, Lee and Cindy Elliott, Grayville, IL.

Terence Barber, 60

Terence Barber, 60, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, November 18, 2023, at Linda E. White Hospice House in Evansville, Indiana, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on April 2, 1963, in Mount Carmel, the son of Roy and Mary (Rexing) Barber. He married Billie (Dunlap) Wood on September 17, 2015, after a twenty-year relationship.

Terry worked for 42 years at Champion Laboratories where he made many friendships. He was a big Star Trek fan and a collector of Star Trek memorabilia. Terry loved cooking the turkey for Thanksgiving dinner and a ham for the Christmas holidays. He enjoyed going camping and was a train enthusiast, especially the older ones. Terry enjoyed flying model helicopters and drones. He wasn’t a big sports fan, but he would sit with Billie to watch Cardinal baseball and enjoyed the game, especially when they were winning. Terry watched all types of movies and was a 70’s and 80’s rock and country music fan. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Terry leaves behind the love of his life of twenty-eight years, Billie Barber; children, Matthew Barber, Heather Tewell and husband Cliff, Elizabeth “Lizzy” Barber; stepchildren, Lloyd Wood Jr., Leslie Archer, and husband John; several grandchildren, step-grandchildren; sisters, Teresa (Jay) Morgan of Jasper, IN, Trudy (Terry) Barber of Washington, IN, Tonia (Mike) Bobbitt of Mt. Carmel; several nieces and nephews.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Thecla Allen, Trina Deisher; one brother, Tracy Barber.

Graveside Services will be at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at Highland Memorial Cemetery, with Tim Thacker officiating.

Charles E. “Charlie” Wall Sr., 72

Charles E. “Charlie” Wall Sr., 72, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, went to his heavenly home Sunday, November 12 at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 26, 1950, in Harrisburg, Illinois, the son of Alta (Oldham) Brown and Cletes Wall. He married Kathryn Hodgson on February 4, 1977, and together they celebrated forty-six years of marriage, focused on their faith and family.

Charlie attended college at Indiana University, South Bend. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He was stationed on Oahu Island in Honolulu County, Hawaii. He was a diehard St. Louis Cardinals fan. Charlie loved going to the beach on vacations. His favorite thing to do was sit and watch the tides roll in. He was known for long, entertaining stories which he loved to repeat often.

Charlie loved spending time with his grandkids. He supported them in every event they had, whether it be sports or school plays, it didn’t matter, he was there to show his support, cheer them on and let them know PaPa loved them and was always proud of them.

Charlie preached the Gospel for over forty years. He retired from the Lighthouse Church in Patton Illinois. He attended Heartland Worship Center. Charlie was a faithful man who loved the Lord. He managed his illness with strength and grace. While he fought his battle with cancer, he never lost his sense of humor. Throughout his entire journey, he cracked jokes, made silly faces at the grandkids, and even pulled some light-hearted pranks. He had a great ability to make others smile and his sense of humor will be missed.

Charlie is survived by the love of his life of forty-six years, Kathy Wall; children, Charlie and Jillian Wall, Tamera and Peter Wood, all of Mount Carmel; grandchildren, Olivia and Maddison Wall, Jaxsen, Joesoph, and Julia Wood; one sister, Diane (Carey) Lane; one brother, Don (Nancy) Wall; two sisters-in-law, Wilma Hodgson, Debbie Cullison; five brothers-in-law, Jim (Kathleen) Watkins, Don (Kathy) Watkins, William JR (Patti) Hodgson, Charles (Theresa) Hodgson, Minor Akers; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Charlie is preceded in death by his parents, Alta Brown and Cletes Wall; stepparents, Robert Brown and Mary Lou Wall; grandparents, Eugene and Florence (Graves) Wall, Leroy Oldham and Alta (Smith) Hedger; sisters-in-law, Francis Akers, Jewel Higginson and Onie Hurt; brothers-in-law, Bobby Hodgson, Carl Hodgson and Glen Higginson; a

baby grandchild, father and mother-in-law, William Hodgson Sr. and Leotta Hodgson.

Family and friends are invited to gather for a Visitation from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at Heartland Worship Center.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 16, 2023, at Heartland Worship with Pastor Tony Hodgson and Brother Bill Reed officiating. Burial will follow at Friendsville Cemetery with Full Military Honors

Ronald Lynn Goldman, 80

Ronald Lynn Goldman, 80, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away November 9, 2023, at Wabash General Hospital.

Services will be held Monday, November 13, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Short-Cunningham Funeral Home. A burial to follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the service, Monday, November 13, 2023, in the Chapel of Short-Cunningham Funeral Home.

Ronald was born to the late Harry and Ada (Nesler) Goldman on January 26, 1943, in Mount Carmel, Illinois. Surviving are his three children: Gregory Goldman, Teresa Goldman, and Cathy Goldman, all of Mount Carmel, Illinois. Also surviving are his grandchildren: Kiersten R. (Drew) Cheadle and Kiefer W. (Annie) Goldman, his great-grandson Kamden W. Goldman, sister Dianna K. (Ray) Wood of Lancaster, Illinois, sister-in-law Jill Goldman of Mount Carmel, Illinois, close family friend Janie Ensminger and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Franklin Goldman, sister Sondra Howell, brother-in-law Glenn “Doc” Howell and great-grandson Grayson Wade Goldman.

Ronald learned his trade as an Electrician Lineman from being in the Army where he was an E5 Sergeant. After the Army he worked for Mount Carmel Public Utility and various Power Plants in Illinois and Colorado. Upon returning to the area, he managed various clubs. Ronald was a Member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the American Legion Post 590 in Albion, Illinois. In the summertime, Ronald enjoyed working outdoors. He loved spending as much time as possible with his grandchildren, especially his great-grandson Kamden.
