On 5/30/23, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Charles B. Garrett, age 57, of Mt. Carmel, for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia following a domestic dispute at his residence in the 400 block of N Walnut Street. During the investigation, officers observed a glass pipe containing a burnt white residue inside of it along with two straws containing a white powdery residue. These items are commonly used to ingest narcotics, particularly methamphetamine. Garrett was placed under arrest and transported to the Wabash County Jail. Garrett was held pending the posting of bond. The domestic dispute was unfounded.
Mt. Carmel Woman Arrested In Courthouse On FTA Warrant
On 5/30/23, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Jesika R. Moreno, age 30, of Mt. Carmel, on a Wabash County Failure to Appear Warrant after missing her scheduled court date earlier on that date. The arresting officer found Moreno on the first floor of the courthouse while a friend of hers attended his court hearing. Moreno was escorted to the Wabash County Jail where she was issued the warrant and held pending the posting of bond.
Trailer Owner Vows To Seek Legal Help Against City Council
A Mt. Carmel woman who wants to replace an aging mobile home with a newer one in the 900 block of East 5th Street says she’s getting a lawyer to fight the city council. Patty Courtright’s request to change a city ordinance that prohibits trailers older than 15 years old from being placed in any area of the city other than a trailer park has now been denied by the city council for a third time. At Tuesday’s city council meeting, Courtright again appeared and this time was much more vocal that her efforts are being rejected and that touched off a verbal spat with commissioner Tom Meeks….
Courtright rejected suggestions she locate the 20 plus year trailer in a trailer park saying it wasn’t a viable option for family members she is providing care. She left the meeting Tuesday vowing to continue her fight with the help of an attorney.

Road Rage Incident Sends Bellmont Man To Jail
On 5/28/23, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Milburn E. Hornback, age 57, of Bellmont for Aggravated Assault following an alleged road rage incident on outer W 9th Street. Police were called to the scene regarding Hornback accusing another motorist of tailgating him while entering Mt. Carmel. Hornback stopped his vehicle, partially still in the roadway, at which time he began yelling at the other driver while holding a wooden billy club. This alarmed the other driver so they continued on until reaching a safe area in the parking lot of the fire department. Following an investigation into the matter police arrested Hornback and escorted him to the Wabash County Jail. Hornback admitted the allegation and turned over the alleged weapon that was still in his vehicle. Hornback is being held pending a bond setting by a judge. In 2022, Hornback was arrested on a similar complaint investigated by the Wabash County Sheriff's Office.
Indiana State Police Investigating Memorial Day Fatal Crash on SR 64 in Crawford County
(Crawford County) - At approximately 4:34 P.M., the Indiana State Police and other agencies responded to a two-vehicle crash on State Road 64 near Eckerty.
Trooper Austin Collin’s preliminary crash investigation revealed that a maroon 2017 Ford F-150 driven by Gerald Jarvis, 86, of Evansville, was traveling in the westbound lane of State Road 64. For an unknown reason, Jarvis is believed to have crossed the center line into the eastbound lane and sideswiped a black 1999 Chevrolet Camaro driven by Ashtin Aders, 17, of Saint Meinrad. After the initial impact, the Camaro ran off the road into the side ditch and the Ford flipped over onto it's top.
The rear passenger of the Camaro, Riley Mullis, 18, of Bristow, was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Crawford County Coroner. Jarvis was air lifted to University of Louisville Hospital, Kentucky where he is being treated for his injuries. Aders and the front passenger, Connor Mullis, 19, of Bristow, were transported to Jasper Memorial Hospital for minor injuries. All occupants were properly restrained.
State Road 64 was shut down for the investigation. Landing areas had to be established on the roadway for the responding helicopter, and there was a lengthy cleanup process on both sides. Traffic flow was restored at approximately 8:03 P.M. Monday evening.
This is an ongoing investigation. At this time, there is no further information to release. Alcohol or drugs were not believed to be a factor.

City Offers Advice On What To Do If You Have Broken Trash Toter
Broken trash toters are becoming a bigger problem around Mt. Carmel as Republic Services drivers often break wheels or lids off of the receptacles. City Clerk Ryan Turner explains what you should do when
your toter is damaged…
Since the city has an ordinance that you can’t leave your toter streetside longer than 24 hours before or after scheduled pickup, Turner said it’s best to put the broken toter by the street with the damaged part on top of the toter so Republic crews know it needs replaced.
Bids For New Fire Department Roof Being Reviewed
Bids to replace the roof at Mt. Carmel’s fire department are under review at City Hall. Two bids were received, one from David Brown Construction for $39,600 and the other from Sharp Solutions for $35,650. Mayor Joe Judge said the bids are being reviewed to ensure they meet the requirements for the work. The bid is expected to be awarded at this afternoon’s City Council meeting, which is a day later than normal due to the Memorial Day holiday yesterday.
FTA Warrant Leads To Arrest Of Mt. Carmel Man
On 5/26/23, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Jason A. Martin, age 45, of Mt. Carmel, on a Wabash County Warrant for Failure to Appear. The arresting officer observed Martin walking in the area of 7th & Walnut, where he was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Wabash County Jail. Martin is being held pending the posting of bond.
Domestic Dispute Leads To Aggravated Battery Charges Against Mt. Carmel Woman
On 5/29/23, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Haillie N. Batterton, age 24, of Mt. Carmel, for Aggravated Domestic Battery following a domestic dispute at a residence in the 400 block of W 6th Street. Police were called to the scene by another party who witnessed the incident. Upon arrival, officers found evidence that Batterton had physically attacked a family member who is over the age of 60. Batterton was transported to the Wabash County Jail where she was charged and held pending a bond setting by a judge.
