Florida Trucker Injured In I-70 Crash

ISP INVESTIGATES TRAFFIC CRASH WITH INJURIES

The Following Preliminary Information is Being Released by Illinois State Police District 12

WHAT:                        Single Vehicle Traffic Crash with Injuries

WHERE:                   Interstate 70 westbound near Milepost 76.5, Fayette County

WHEN:                      Nov. 17, 2021 at approximately 1:57 a.m.

VEHICLE:                Unit 1 – Blue 2004 Freightliner Truck Tractor Semi-Trailer

 

DRIVER:                   Unit 1 – Mario A. Rojas, 46-year-old male from Miami, FL - Transported to an area hospital with injuries.

 

PRELIMINARY:      Preliminary investigative details indicate the following occurred: Unit 1 was traveling westbound on Interstate 70 approaching exit 76.  For an unknown reason Unit 1 traveled off the roadway left striking a guardrail and continued off the roadway down the bridge embankment and then struck the Union Pacific Rail line located at the intersection with Brewbaker Drive in St. Elmo, IL.  The driver was transported by Air Evac to an area hospital with injuries. 

CHARGES:               The driver of Unit 1 was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.

 

All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law 

 

WCHD Honored With Wabash County Business Of The Year Award

The Wabash County Chamber of Commerce has announced the winners of the 2021 Businesses of the Year. On yesterday’s WSJD Morning Show, Chamber executive director Lesley Hipsher announced that the Wabash County Health Department was the recipient of the first award…

 Hipsher also said this year the Chamber was handing out a small business of the year award as well..

The awards are typically handed out annually at the Chamber banquet. But, this is the second straight year the banquet has been cancelled by the pandemic.

Christmas Season Arriving In Mt. Carmel

The holiday season made its first appearance on Market Street yesterday as city crews started the process of installing the huge Christmas tree decorations. City Clerk Ryan Turner announced at Monday’s City Council meeting that the holiday decorations were typically put up right before Thanksgiving, but were being moved up to this week to make things less hectic for city crews. It’s expected all intersections will be decorated by the end of the day today.

Turner also announced that City Hall will close at noon next Wednesday and be closed the 25th and 26th for the Thanksgiving holiday.

CHRISTMAS UPTOWN RETURNS TO MOUNT CARMEL

Relive your memories of Christmas past, create new memories for Christmas future, and all the while revel in the excitement of Christmas present during the 13th edition of Mt. Carmel’s “Christmas Uptown - It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas”.

Several Ponies will be available for Rudolph Rides, and all the rides are free to the public! Also part of this family event, you have a chance to “create your own treat” at the S’Mores Making Station, even make a “take home” craft. Who wouldn’t want to take a few minutes to relive everyone’s favorite narratives of Christmas at Storytime with Mrs. Claus, and even talk to Santa himself on the Harris Insurance Group Pavilion after winding through the Festival of Trees in Merchants Park. Maybe you’d like to join the fun at the Festive Face Painting station, also providing a specially created balloon animal for the children. Again, there is no charge for these activities, thanks to the dozens of community minded sponsors and volunteers.

While you’re inside the Wabash County Museum visiting local authors, offering their newest books, you’ll absolutely want to vote for the best entries in the Gingerbread House competition. You can even enter your own creation, just visit our Facebook page for guidelines and a link to the entry form. Inside the Wabash Senior Center you’ll find take home kits to decorate your own cookie for just a $1 donation.

Parents, let the younger folks burn off some energy playing Kid Friendly games at the Winter Wonderland Play Zone, or take advantage of the multiple Character or Family Photo Ops, especially the giant new 10’ x 10’ backgrounds (including live characters from “Frozen” and “Polar Express”), right next to Veterans Park and the City of Mt. Carmel Christmas Tree. Throughout the entire evening we’ll bring you both the old and the new Sounds of Christmas! Relax with the “Families of Wabash County String Ensemble”, catch the Christmas Beat with the “Mt. Carmel High School Jazz Band”, gather round the “Strolling Victorian Carolers” (comprised of the MCHS Singing Seven), or just enjoy the background sounds of Christmas Uptown Radio.

Of course, you’ll no doubt be hungry. The vendors in Mistletoe Market, Santa’s Workshop and the Elves’ Cafe’ will be offering Sweets & Treats as well as fantastic festival food choices to satisfy almost every taste. Soups, Sandwiches, BBQ, Pizza, Drinks and more are just a sampling of the menu, along with candy, cookies, popcorn and caramel apples - who knows what you might find! Vendors will also offer craft and other dry goods items. For even more fun, be sure to shop the Market Street Retailers, many offering snacks, refreshments and really fantastic Christmas sales on the items you need to complete your Christmas shopping list.

Fort Branch man arrested on multiple charges.

On November 13, 2021, at 12:13 a.m. Gibson County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Naas conducted a traffic stop on Main Street near Locust in Fort Branch after observing a Black 2001 Mercedes passenger car with an equipment violation. Upon approaching the vehicle Deputy Naas identified the driver as 18-year-old Bracey Turnpaugh of Fort Branch. During a roadside investigation Deputy Naas ran Mr. Turnpaugh through the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles and discovered that he had never been issued a valid Indiana operators license. At that point Deputy Naas placed Mr. Turnpaugh into custody. While taking Mr. Turnpaugh into custody Marijuana was found on his person. Once the investigation was concluded Deputy Naas transported Mr. Turnpaugh to the Gibson County Jail where he was charged with Operator Never Licensed and Possession of Marijuana. He has since posted a $550 bond.

Assisting Deputy Naas in his investigation was Fort Branch Officer Jeff Beck and Haubstadt Officer Josh Hoover.

All Criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Oakland City woman arrested for driving on a suspended license

On November 14, 2021, at 4:41 p.m. Gibson County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Naas conducted a traffic stop on a Gray 2007 Volkswagon beetle for having an expired license plate. Upon stopping the vehicle in the 6700 block of South State Road 57 Deputy Naas identified the driver as 31-year-old Chantel Powell of Oakland City. During a roadside investigation Deputy Naas ran Ms. Powell through the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles and discovered that Ms. Powell’s operators license had been suspended on a prior Driving While Suspended conviction. At that point Deputy Naas placed Ms. Powell into custody and transported her to the Gibson County Jail where she was charged with Driving While Suspended/Prior. She has since posted a $650 bond.

Wisconsin Firm To Evaluate Mt. Carmel City Pool

The Mt. Carmel City Council has voted to spend $2,750 to have a Wisconsin firm evaluate the city pool and recommend improvements to the aging facility. At last evening’s city council meeting, Mayor Joe Judge said Burbach Aquatics of Platteville, Wisconsin is visiting several area communities and offered to come to Mt. Carmel…

Judge said the city wants to keep the original main pool and improve upon it under phase one of the technical evaluation. In addition to the $2,750 fee, the city will reimburse Burbach for its’ expenses.

Another Major Water Leak At 3rd & Walnut Fixed

There was another major leak at 3rd and Walnut Street in Mt. Carmel, the same place a leak last year nearly drained the city’s water towers. At yesterday’s city council meeting, water commissioner Justin Dulgar said the leak occurred while Kieffer Brothers Construction crews were trying to fix last year’s issue…

In August, the city council voted to spend almost $77,000 with Kieffer Brothers to correct the original problem.

WCHD Holding Moderna Booster Clinic Today At Parkview

The Wabash County Health Department is expected to administer 700 doses of the Moderna booster during a clinic today at Parkview Christian Church. The clinic is being done on an appointment only basis. In a written report submitted to county commissioners yesterday, health department administrator Judy Wissel said there are currently 9 positive COVID cases in isolation and 13 contacts of positive cases are in quarantine. The county’s positivity rate now stands at 2.6%.
