Unemployment Inches Down In Wabash County

The latest jobless figures for Wabash County show unemployment edged down slightly in February. The Illinois Department of Employment Security reports that the jobless rate here in February was 5.1%, compared to 5.9% in January and 3.1% in February of 2020. Richland County had the lowest February jobless rate at 4.7% while the highest was 9.8% in Pulaski County. The I-D-E-S reports employment gains in trade, transportation, and utilities while employment declined in most other sectors.

Patoka woman arrested on outstanding warrant and drug charges

On April 15, 2021, at 2:29 p.m. Gibson County Sergeant Bruce Vanoven and Deputy Jennifer Loesch went to 3205 West Birch Street to serve an outstanding warrant on 36-year-old Nichole Gwaltney of Patoka, Indiana. Upon arriving at the residence and speaking with the owner of the residence officers detected the odor of burnt Marijuana. At that point a drug investigation was initiated that was conducted by Deputy Jennifer Loesch. During the investigation Ms. Gwaltney was taken into custody by Sergeant Bruce Vanoven. Sgt. Vanoven read Ms. Gwaltney her Miranda Warning and spoke to her about her warrant for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender. Additional officers were called to the scene and Sgt. Vanoven transported Ms. Gwaltney to the Gibson County Jail. Upon arriving at the jail Ms. Gwaltney was charged with Failure to Register As A Sex Offender, Possession of Methamphetamines, Unlawful Possession of a Hypodermic Needle, and Possession of Paraphernalia. She remains in custody on a $1500 bond.

Assisting Sergeant Vanoven and Deputy Loesch in their investigation was Princeton officers Sergeant Steve McNeece and Craig Zurilene and Gibson County Deputies Jennifer Robb and Quinten Might.

All Criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Minnesota man arrested on drug charge

On April 15, 2021, at 6:47 p.m. Gibson County Deputy Bryce Jutzi conducted a traffic stop on US 41 near County Road 1200 South on a White 1992 Honda Civic for an equipment violation. While speaking with the driver 21-year-old Courtney Korder of Winona, Minnesota Deputy Jutzi detected clues that indicated illegal drugs may be inside the vehicle. At that point he asked for consent to search the vehicle and Mr. Korder denied that request. Deputy Jutzi then asked Mr. Korder to step back inside his vehicle while he completed the traffic stop. Mr. Korder was also advised that a police K9 was going to come do a free air search around his vehicle due to the clues that he had observed. While completing the traffic stop Deputy Jutzi saw Mr. Korder drop a baggie containing a green leafy substance out the window of his vehicle. At that point Mr. Korder was placed into custody while a drug investigation was conducted. At the conclusion of his investigation Deputy Jutzi transported Mr. Korder to the Gibson County Jail where he was charged with Possession of Marijuana. He has since posted an $1100 bond.

Newburgh woman arrested on outstanding warrant and drug possession

On April 15, 2021, at 10:18 p.m., Gibson County Deputy Zach Lienemann conducted a traffic stop on Main Street in Fort Branch on a White Ford Thunderbird for having False and Fictitious plates. Upon approaching the vehicle Deputy Lienemann identified the driver as 38-year-old Kara Smith of Newburgh, Indiana. While speaking with Ms. Smith Deputy Lienemann was notified by Gibson County Central Dispatch that Ms. Smith had an active warrant through Vanderburgh County. At that point Deputy Lienemann placed Ms. Smith into custody and a vehicle inventory was conducted of the vehicle. During the inventory illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia were found. Ms. Smith was transported to the Gibson County Jail where she was charged with Possession of Methamphetamines and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. She remains in custody on a $1500 bond through Gibson County and an outstanding warrant through Vanderburgh County.

Assisting Deputy Lienemann in his investigation was Haubstadt Officer Riley Farmer.

IJAS REGIONAL SCIENCE FAIR

Tobias Fullop, son of Julko and Nikki Fullop, and Brody English, son of Chelsey Schallenberg, participated in the IJAS Regional Science Fair, which was held virtually this year. The boys presented their findings on an experiment determining which food deer would prefer to a panel of judges through a Zoom meeting. They were awarded the highest level, a Gold certificate, from the judges for their efforts. Their project scored high enough to be awarded a monetary prize sponsored by the SIU School of Medicine for overall excellence. Tobias and Brody also qualified to compete in the State Science Fair to be held virtually later this year. Sarah Dougherty is their 8th grade Science teacher and sponsor. Congratulations to Tobias and Brody on a great achievement under difficult circumstances!

Warrant Leads To Arrest Of Mt. Carmel Man

On 4/08/21, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Timothy W. Morrison, age 43, of Mt. Carmel on a Wabash County Warrant for Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault (3 counts), and Assault. Morrison was located at his residence in the 900 block of Bainum Street where he was then taken into custody. Additionally, Morrison, who is on parole through the Illinois Department of Corrections, was also issued a no bond parole violation warrant as well. Morrison is being held in the Wabash County Jail.

Mt. Carmel Man Arrested On Drug Paraphernalia Charge

On 4/07/21, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Tyler C. Roosevelt, age 18, of Mt. Carmel, for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia following a reckless driver complaint in the area of 4th Street and Hydraulic Ave (River Road). Officers arrived in the area and located a red Chevy truck that was reportedly one of the involved vehicles. Contact was made with the driver, discovered to be Roosevelt, which later resulted in officers finding a glass smoking pipe containing suspected narcotics residue inside the Chevy. Roosevelt was issued a charge for said offense and released on a Notice to Appear in court.
