County Adopts Recreational Cannabis Ordinances

Even though odds are long Wabash County will have a legal cannabis retailer when recreational marijuana becomes legal January 1st, County Commissioners have adopted two ordinances allowing its’ sale within the county. County Commissioner Rob Dean explained the need for the ordinances…

The first ordinance established a county cannabis retailers occupation tax placing a 3.75% tax on gross receipts from sales made in unincorporated areas of Wabash County. If a municipality allows marijuana sales, the county tax would amount to .75%.

The second ordinance adopted last night limited cannabis business establishments to two in each of 6 categories as defined by state statute.

Even though the ordinances were adopted, officials here aren’t optimistic any of the initial licenses granted by the state will be given in Wabash County. In fact, just one license is being granted in the entire city of Springfield and only 47 in Chicago. Harrisburg currently has a medical marijuana dispensary and they will have first crack at having a recreational pot dispensary in this area.
