From Gloria Reed: WRAC President

The WRAC Board met last night and would like to invite the community, teams and interested parties to attend the next meeting – Tuesday September 11th @ 6:00PM at the Wabash General Hospital Meeting Room.

We want teams to be thinking of what activity, game, raffle or food they will be doing at the November 3rd WRAC Fall Fest. We will start to organize the event, map and agenda based on this information.

The more teams, the more booths, the more draw we hope to generate……and most importantly the more money we raise.

We will release financial aid applications Mid-October and after the Fall Fest has concluded we will start to distribute our raised funds. The applications will be on a first come, first serve basis.

The more money we raise, the more people we can help!!!

The purpose of our September meeting is to start to organize teams and the Fall Fest Event as well provide information and have general Q&A!

We will have “Ribbon of Love” order/sale sheets available for all teams and also WRAC shirts for sale.

If you are unfamiliar with “Ribbons of Love” or our WRAC baseball T’s….be sure to come the meeting!!!

Hope to see you all there,

ILLINOIS STATE POLICE ENCOURAGE SAFE DRIVING HABITS FOR LABOR DAY HOLIDAY WEEKEND

CARMI, IL - The Labor Day holiday weekend signifies the end of the summer and the last chance for people to get out and enjoy the warm weather. The holiday weekend is one the busiest driving periods and millions of motorists will hit the roadways nationwide. Illinois State Police (ISP) District 19 Commander, Captain Cory Ristvedt, is reminding motorists to make safety their number one priority while driving during the Labor Day holiday weekend.

This upcoming holiday weekend Troopers will focus their attention on the Fatal 4, those driving behaviors most associated with fatal traffic crashes. These driving behaviors include, Driving Under the Influence (DUI), Speeding, Distracted Driving, and Failure to Wear Seat Belts. In addition to the enforcement of the Fatal 4 violations, Troopers will patrol Illinois roadways watching for and assisting stranded motorists.

There will be additional emphasis on DUI offenses over the holiday weekend. The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign continues through the holiday weekend. The ISP will have additional Troopers conducting Roadside Safety Checks and other emphasis enforcement patrols to remove impaired drivers from the roadways.

Troopers will also be watching for those who fail to slow down and move over. Illinois law requires motorists to reduce speed, change lanes if possible, and proceed with due caution when approaching a vehicle on the side of the road displaying rotating or flashing lights.

According to Captain Ristvedt, “The overall goal for the ISP this upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend is to ensure the safety of those traveling on our roadways. Through the combined efforts of the ISP and the traveling public, this can be accomplished as a result of ISP enforcement efforts and safe driving habits of the motorists.”

Motorists can expect increased traffic volumes and should plan to allow extra time when traveling to their destinations. Voluntary compliance to traffic laws will assist in making Labor Day travels a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

WGH Board Approves New Sleeping Quarters AT WGAS Base

The Wabash General Hospital Board of Directors last night okayed a plan to build sleeping quarters at the Wabash General Ambulance Service base on College Drive.  Vice President of Clinical Services/CNO, Tamara Gould said the preference of most EMT’s these days centers on a 24 hour work shift. She said WGH is losing out on many prospects because of their desire to work a 24 hour shift. To be more competitive in attracting and retaining EMT’s, Gould recommended the board approve building the 5 sleeping quarters in part of one of the ambulance bays. Since the hospital is going down to three ambulances, Gould said the space was there for the renovation. The bid of Mike Speir Construction of Albion for just over $61,000 was approved by the board. It’s expected the new sleeping quarters will be ready in about three weeks.

At their meeting last night, commissioners okayed the recommendation from senior citizens commissioner Joe Judge that the city spend $13,500 to purchase the 2012 Chevy Colorado from a seller in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The truck includes a hot box that will allow the meals on wheels program to deliver hot and cold meals safely…..

Of the $13,500 purchase price, Judge said $10,000 was already included in the senior citizens budget and that he expects grants from Toyota and the Frank Orr Trust to cover the remaining $3,500. Judge said he plans to go to Michigan tomorrow to pick up the truck.

Illinois Senate Passes Legislation To End "Lunch Shaming" At School

SPRINGFIELD – In many school districts, students who are unable to pay for lunch can be stigmatized with a special wristband or handstamp, and in some cases – even denied lunch.

To stop this practice known as “lunch shaming” in Illinois, State Senator Steve Stadelman (D-Rockford) passed Senate Bill 2428 through the Illinois Senate.

“Forcing students to go without lunch is punishing them for the mistakes of their parents,” Stadelman said. “All students, regardless of their parents status or  income level, deserve to have a hot lunch.”

Under Stadelman’s proposal, every school will be required to provide a meal to a student that requests one. While the school can contact the parents directly to request they pay for the child’s lunch, they are prevented from throwing  the meal out, forcing the student to wear a wristband or otherwise stigmatizing them.  If the school district is owed $500 by a student’s parents and they have made a reasonable effort to collect the debt, the district can request the Illinois Comptroller withhold tax refunds from parents to pay off the debt.

“As a state, we can’t force students to sit through class hungry and expect them to learn,” Stadelman said. “This plan ensures all students will be given an opportunity to succeed instead of being forced to learn on an empty stomach.”

The proposal passed through the Illinois Senate with a vote of 41-9-1. It will now head to the Illinois House of Representatives for consideration.
