Mt. Carmel High School Athletics Hall of Fame - 2026 Hall of Fame Class

MOUNT CARMEL, IL — The Mt. Carmel Sports Boosters are proud to announce the 2026 class of the Mt. Carmel High School Athletics Hall of Fame.

This year's class includes two outstanding baseball teams, four accomplished individual athletes, and five individuals being recognized for their lasting contributions to Golden Aces athletics in the Friends of MCHS Athletics category.

The 2026 inductees will be honored during the Mt. Carmel boys basketball game against Casey-Westfield on Friday, February 5, 2027, at Mt. Carmel High School.

1979 & 1980 MCHS Baseball Teams

The 1979 and 1980 Mt. Carmel Golden Aces baseball teams, coached by Larry Lockhart,  made back-to-back appearances in the IHSA State Championship Game, finishing just one victory away from bringing a state title home to Mt. Carmel.

The 1979 team, competing in Class 2A, was the smallest school in its class with an enrollment of just 754 students. The Aces finished 17-2, defeating West Aurora 3-0 and Palatine Fremd 2-0 to reach the state championship game before falling to Proviso West, 5-1. Reggie Fisher and Scott Wampler were named All-State, while Fisher, Wampler and Pat Dunkel earned All-NEC and All-Southern Illinois honors. Fisher went on to be drafted by the Chicago White Sox and remains eighth all-time in IHSA history with a 0.69 career ERA.

The 1980 team competed in Class 1A and finished 23-6, returning to the state championship game. Mt. Carmel defeated Peoria Bergan 3-2 and Genoa-Kingston 6-4 before falling to Alton Marquette, 8-7. Greg Seaton, Russ Hargrave, Randy Hiatt and Todd Painter were named All-State.

Bud Brown

A 1957 graduate of Mt. Carmel High School, Bud Brown was a four-sport standout in football, basketball, baseball and track, earning an impressive 15 varsity letters.

Brown was one of the few freshmen to start on the MCHS football team and was a 1956 All-State Honorable Mention selection, co-captain and second-team All-NEC running back. In basketball, he was a first-team All-NEC selection and helped lead the Aces to a 25-4 regional championship season in 1954 alongside MCHS great Archie Dees. Brown also became a member of the MCHS 1,000-point club.

He earned a basketball scholarship to the University of Evansville before suffering serious injuries in an accident. Brown also competed on the 1957 MCHS baseball team that finished runner-up in the state finals and held the MCHS boys high jump record for years.

Brown's contributions to Golden Aces athletics continued long after his playing days. He was instrumental in helping establish the Mt. Carmel Junior League Football Program. And as owner of Bud Brown Sporting Goods, he also donated football equipment to many area youth. Bud passed away in 2011. His contributions to Golden Aces Nation are still felt today.

Scott (Allen) McCallen — Friend of MCHS Athletics

Scott McCallen, a Peoria native, is a 2026 inductee in the Friends of MCHS Athletics category. Scott came to Mt. Carmel after a short stint at WEIC radio in Charleston, Illinois — working at WYER, WRBT, WYNG, WSJD and at Wabash Valley College's Broadcasting Department.

His name became synonymous with Mt. Carmel Golden Aces athletics, serving as the voice of the Golden Aces from 1979 through 2025. Some of his most memorable calls include Mt. Carmel's 1981 Class 3A football playoff comeback at Nashville, 2013's infamous 71-70 shootout with Greenville, and the Golden Aces' return to the state basketball championship game in 2017 — a special thrill in a return to his hometown of Peoria.

Scott was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2009. He also currently maintains the Little Illini Conference website, contributes to the Golden Aces football pre-game show on WSJD, and remains active with his church, where he volunteers regularly.

Tom Tinsley

A 1969 graduate of Mt. Carmel High School, Tom Tinsley became the first MCHS golfer to participate in the IHSA State Golf Tournament.

Tinsley finished second in the 1969 IHSA State Golf Tournament, shooting a 148 over two days. That remains the highest finish by an MCHS boys golfer.

Tinsley earned a golf scholarship to Western Kentucky University, where he was a multiple-time medalist. He won numerous tournaments throughout his career, including the 1967 and 1968 Mt. Carmel Invitationals, the 1971 Carmi Gold Amateur, the Tri-State Amateur, the Cave City Golf Tournament and the 1972 Collegiate Golf Classic at Western Kentucky.

He was also a 10-time Mt. Carmel Men's Club Champion and recorded numerous second- and third-place finishes in tri-state tournaments. Tom passed away last year but will long be remembered for his abilities and his passion for Golden Aces sports.

Tom Wirth

A 1965 graduate of Mt. Carmel High School, Tom Wirth played for Hall of Fame coach Jim John and started at linebacker and fullback for three years.

As a junior, Wirth was part of the first undefeated football team in school history and an NEC championship team. He became known as a “big hitter” on defense as a linebacker and was a key member of a dynamic backfield that averaged over 35 points per game. During his senior season, he was named First-Team All-State at a time when Illinois had only one class of football. He was All-Southern Illinois Player of the Year and NEC Conference Player of the Year.

Wirth earned 11 varsity letters in four sports before receiving a football scholarship to Southern Illinois University, where he was the starting fullback for three years. He graduated from SIU with a bachelor's degree in marketing. Tom passed away in 2018 but his contributions as a Golden Ace will long be remembered.

Dee White — Friend of MCHS Athletics

Dee White, a 1946 graduate of Mt. Carmel High School, was a lifelong supporter of Golden Aces football. Dee helped Ray Farrar and George Woodcock establish the Junior League League Football Program in Mt. Carmel which continues today.

Recognizing a need to help young athletes who could not afford equipment, Dee helped create the Mt. Carmel High School Sports Booster Club and served as its first president. The organization eventually expanded to support all MCHS sports and became an important source of financial support for athletics.

Dee was also a regular contributor to the weekly football meetings and was instrumental in traditions including the Gold Helmet Award and the long-running "Steak Dinner" tradition. Veteran fans remember him watching games from his ladder along the sideline for a better view. Dee White Field, home of the Mt. Carmel Golden Aces baseball team is named in his honor.

Dee passed away in 1994, but his contributions to Mt. Carmel athletics continue to be remembered.

Bill Hackler, Gary Rumsey & Verlin Snow — Friends of MCHS Athletics

The 2026 class will also recognize three longtime voices of Golden Aces football in the Friends of MCHS Athletics category: Bill Hackler, Gary Rumsey and Verlin Snow.

For several decades, these three men provided the public-address voices from the press box, becoming a familiar part of Golden Aces football Friday nights.

Bill Hackler took over the microphone in 1976, Gary Rumsey joined him in 1984, and Verlin Snow came aboard in 1988. All three retired from the booth following the 2016 season.

Fans will especially remember Hackler's signature call:

"On Your Feet Aces Fans, Fire Up, Fire Up!"

Hackler, Rumsey and Snow were also active in numerous community service organizations and held leadership roles with the Mt. Carmel Sports Boosters.

2026 Hall of Fame Induction

The Mt. Carmel Sports Boosters invite Golden Aces fans, former athletes, coaches, families and members of the community to join in celebrating the accomplishments and contributions of the 2026 Mt. Carmel High School Athletics Hall of Fame class.

The induction ceremony will take place during the Mt. Carmel boys basketball game against Casey-Westfield on Friday, February 5, 2027. A reception will also be held, with more details to follow.

Fairfield Defends Home Court Against Lady Aces

The Mt. Carmel Lady Aces traveled to Fairfield Monday night facing the Lady Mules.  The the girls had a hard time getting momentum with Fairfield bringing a strong attacking game. The Aces dropped the match 16-25, 10-25.  We didn’t make many errors,  but neither did Fairfield, and they put up many more swings than us.

Stat totals Lyla Keepes 4 kills, 8 digs 1 assist, Avery Coston 8 kills, 1 dig, Kyleigh Smith 1 dig, 1 kill, Mylee Farmer 6 digs, Quincy Keepes 17 assists, 3 digs, Mercedes Dillard 2 digs,  Leah Lewis 1 ace,1 kill, 2 digs, and Leila Sweeney 2 digs, Cate Pyatt 3 kills, 1 dig

The JV Lady Aces came out the first set and had a hard time keeping up Fairfield’s offence. Fairfield tipped, hit corners, and moved the ball everywhere.  Aces dropped the set 10-25, but the second set the girls pursued the ball faster and lead a good amount of the set, but Fairfield came back at the end and Aces dropped it 23-25.

Stats Caroline Blake 2 aces, 10 digs, 5 kills, Quinn Rooney 10 digs, 3 kills, Mia Dickerson 1 dig, 5 kills, Josie James 1 dig, 2 kills, Kennedy Krajac 1 dig, Ryleigh Gill 1 ace, 13 digs, 2 assists, Harper Warnken 1 ace, 6 digs, 1 kill, 10 assists, Presley Stevens 1 kill,  Haleigh Prosise 2 digs.

Olney Downs Mt. Carmel, 7-1

From Coach Ed Berberich: The Soccer Aces hosted the Richland County Tigers on Thursday night, losing 1-7.  The Aces took the lead in the 20th minute when Zac Horton took a shot that the Tiger's goalie was unable to control, and Kadin Melahn finished off the rebound with a header. The Tigers would tie the match up in the 25th minute, and then take a 2-1 lead in the 31st minute. They would add one more goal with just under 5 minutes left in the half to take a 3-1 lead into the break. That score remained until the visitors were able to score in the 46th and 61st minutes to put the match out of reach. They would add 2 goals in the last 7 minutes. For the match the Aces took 7 shots, 6 on frame, had 3 chances created and 4 interceptions. Eli Baker had 13 saves in goal, and Ezio Bisogni had 1. The Tigers took 20 shots for the game, with 11 on frame.

Richland County is a good team, they're certainly ahead of where we are at the moment but we were able to hang in there for a large portion of the game until we started to wear down late. We were missing 5 starters for most of this game so to play well enough to hang around, and even lead briefly, was a good feeling for the team. We've still got things to work on but we're continuing to make improvements in these last few games which is encouraging. Earlier in the season, if we had played a game under the same conditions, it would have gone quite differently so the guys are taking steps forward. We're obviously not yet where we want to be, but we're proud of the guys for continuing to work through it all and improve.

The Aces next play Pinckneyville at home on Thursday October 1st at 6:00 pm.

Casey Downs Lady Aces In LIC Action

From Assistant Coach Bonnie Keepes:

The Lady Aces traveled to Casey Westfield on Thursday night.  The girls came out and won the first set 25-23, but dropped the next two 18-25, 22-25. The girls had a good amount of kills, but were not as clean on defense and serve receive.  Casey came up with the win playing very scrappy defense. Avery Coston had a high 14 kills, Mylee Farmer 16 digs, and Quin Keepes 28 assists.

Stat totals Lyla Keepes 11 kills, 6 digs 1 ace, Avery Coston 14 kills, 2 block, 4 digs,  Kyleigh Smith 1 ace, 3 kills, Mylee Farmer 16 digs, Quincy Keepes 28 assists, 2 digs, 1 kill, Mercedes Dillard 5 digs, 1 ace, Leah Lewis 1 ace,1 kill, 5 digs, and Leila Sweeney 4 digs, Cate Pyatt 2 kills, 2 block.

The JV team fared well winning 25-18, 25-14. This is the best I’ve seen them play together. The girls had a strong attacking game and played consistent.
Stats Caroline Blake 6 digs, 6 kills, Quinn Rooney 1 ace, 4 digs, 5 kills, Mia Dickerson 1 ace, 6 kills, 1 dig, Ryleigh Gill 2 aces, 14 digs, 2 assists, Harper Warnken 7 digs, 1 kill, 1 block, 17 assists, 2 aces, Presley Stevens 4 kills, Macy Glenn 1 kill, 1 dig, Haleigh Prosise 1 dig.

The Lady Aces Frosh team won 25-14, and 25-19. They played together more as a team tonight as well.
The Lady Aces will travel to Fairfield next Monday starting at 5 with Frosh.

Dave Rigg To Be Honored With The IHSA Distinguished Media Service Award In 2026-27

The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) is proud to announce its 12th class of recipients of the IHSA Distinguished Media Service Award.

The 2026-27 honorees encompass two active media members, as well as a recent retiree.

Millie Lange, who has enjoyed a decorated career in the Effingham area in print and radio, becomes the first female winner of the award, while the voice of high school sports in Will County, WJOL’s Scott Slocum, is also being recognized. Dave Rigg, who retired in February, will be honored after a career in radio and streaming that spanned almost 60 years.

The fourth and final member of the class, veteran radio voice Jim Teckenbrock, passed away in 2025 and will be the first honoree to receive the award posthumously.

The IHSA Distinguished Media Service Award was created to recognize media members who have covered high school sports and activities in Illinois for a significant period of time, while maintaining perspective on the amateur events they report on. See past winners by clicking here.

“Congratulations to each of these individuals on this well-deserved honor,” said IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson. “Millie is truly a trailblazer in her field, and we are proud to be a part of her making more history in being the first female honoree for this award. This year’s class certainly exemplifies the special connection that we have with those who bring us high school sports over the airwaves. Dave, Scott, and the late great Jim Teckenbrock, were all the voices of high school sports in their respective areas of the state and have made a lasting impact on their communities. We look forward to bringing special recognition to each during the 2026-27 school year.”

IHSA member school personnel and veteran media members in the state are eligible to nominate individuals for the award. Beginning in 2024, the IHSA began to honor at least one retired media member as a part of what is traditionally a class of four honorees.

The IHSA’s media advisory committee, and a select committee of past honorees in the state vote on the nominees. Each winner will be honored at a high school event of their choosing during the 2026-27 school year.

“A vital element of this award is the recognition within the community,” said Troha. “We look forward to seeing this year’s winners being recognized in front of the students, coaches, and communities they have impacted with their exceptional work.”

A bio on each of the honorees is below:

 DAVE RIGG

Dave Rigg’s high school sports broadcasting career spans 59 years and includes radio, public address and internet webcasting. A graduate of Edwards County High School in Albion, Rigg attended Wabash Valley College in Mt. Carmel, where he studied Radio & TV Broadcasting. He also participated in football and basketball during high school.

Rigg began his broadcasting career in 1967, calling Mt. Carmel Aces football and basketball games on WSAB-FM. Inspired by his love of listening to St. Louis Cardinals broadcaster Harry Caray, Rigg had already gained experience doing public address work for Bone Gap Little League and Pony League baseball. While at Wabash Valley College, he volunteered to assist with Mt. Carmel Aces football broadcasts. When the play-by-play announcer became ill, Rigg stepped in as the voice of the Aces and Wabash Valley College Warriors.

In 1971, Rigg joined WFIW-FM in Fairfield, providing play-by-play for Fairfield, Cisne, Wayne City, Edwards County, Mills Prairie and Grayville high school basketball. He also covered the first three Class A Boys Basketball State Tournaments in Champaign in 1972, 1973 and 1974. After stepping away from radio broadcasts in 1975, he continued as the public address announcer for Edwards County football before returning to play-by-play in 1979, focusing his coverage on Edwards County football and basketball.

Rigg began webcasting Edwards County basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball games in 2002. His broadcasting career also included several State Finals appearances, including Edwards County volleyball in 2012, 2013, and 2014, Weber Township baseball in 2014 and Wayne City softball in 2015.

Rigg says the best part of covering high school sports has been his opportunity to associate with student-athletes and provide broadcasts for those unable to attend games. He particularly enjoyed covering Edwards County girls volleyball and basketball and was the first to provide internet coverage of every Edwards County contest in both sports.

Known throughout Southern Illinois for the bright red sports coat he wore while calling games, Rigg's dedication to high school athletics has made him a familiar and valued presence at countless events. Away from broadcasting, he enjoys researching old newspapers and writing stories about people and events from the past.

Award Presentation: On Thursday, October 15 at Edwards County High School during the Edwards County vs. Hamilton County High School varsity girls volleyball game. Presentation prior to the match at approximately 6:45 PM.

MILLIE LANGE

The first female recipient of the IHSA Distinguished Media Service Award, Millie Lange blazed a trail in spending more than five decades covering high school sports in the Effingham area, first as a newspaper reporter and later through radio. A graduate of Effingham High School, Lange took evening courses at Lakeland College before beginning her career at the Effingham Daily News.

Lange joined the Daily News in 1970 after her mother encouraged her to pursue her love of writing. She initially worked in the newspaper’s composing room for 10 years before sports editor Sam Rickelman recognized her interest in athletics and began sending her to games to keep score and gather information for his stories. When Rickelman became ill during boys basketball regionals, Lange was asked to cover the games and write the stories herself. Despite having little experience writing game stories, she studied Rickelman’s work and developed her skills, eventually moving into a full-time sports reporting role.

Lange remained at the Effingham Daily News until 2010, covering generations of student-athletes, coaches and teams throughout the area. She then joined WXEF/KJ Country, initially as a receptionist while also helping with sports coverage and writing. She continues in that role today.

Throughout her career, Lange has been a familiar presence at high school athletic events and was once the lone woman among the area’s sports reporters covering boys athletics. She fondly recalls Effingham St. Anthony coach and athletic director Dave Bartlett going out of his way to make sure she received the same access as her male counterparts following a big boys basketball victory. Lange also remembers correctly predicting a dramatic, buzzer-beating finish in a Teutopolis girls basketball game, much to the disbelief of a reporter sitting beside her.

For Lange, the best part of covering high school sports has been watching young athletes develop from grade school through high school and, in many cases, into college. She has also developed lasting relationships with coaches and athletic directors, whom she credits for their assistance and respect throughout her career.

An avid Chicago Cubs fan, Lange enjoys traveling, photography, gardening and attending Cubs games, where she still keeps score. She also participates on a trivia team based at the radio station. After more than five decades in sports media, Lange’s dedication to covering high school athletics has helped tell the stories of countless student-athletes and teams across the Effingham area.

Award Presentation: On Monday, November 16 at Effingham High School during the Effingham vs. Robinson High School varsity girls basketball game. Presentation prior to the game at approximately 7:15 PM.

SCOTT SLOCUM

Scott Slocum has spent nearly four decades covering high school sports in the Joliet area, building a career that has included radio and television broadcasting while creating opportunities and memorable experiences for generations of student-athletes. A 1984 graduate of East Peoria Community High School, Slocum was a two-time All-Conference basketball player in the Mid-State 8 Conference, led the league in scoring and free-throw shooting as a senior and earned honorable mention All-State honors. He continued his playing career at North Central College, where he led the CCIW in three-point shooting as a junior.

Slocum began his broadcasting career in 1988 as a sports reporter at WJOL in Joliet, quickly becoming the station's Sports Director. From 1995-1999, he also worked as an afternoon sports reporter and anchor at WBBM Newsradio 780 in Chicago, where he covered the city's professional sports scene. In 1999, Slocum became Program Director and Morning Show Host at WJOL, positions he continues to hold today.

His broadcasting career has also included extensive television work. Slocum has worked with IHSA TV broadcasting the Girls Basketball State Finals and Girls State Volleyball Finals, as well as with Comcast SportsNet, SportsChannel, CBS in Peoria and Lakeshore Public Sports.

For Slocum, the appeal of high school sports is rooted in tradition, community, and relationships. He appreciates the role athletic programs play in the identity of their communities and the lifelong friendships created through competition. His career in the Joliet area has allowed him to broadcast numerous memorable moments, including the careers of standouts such as Gary Bell, Roger Powell Jr., Alando Tucker, and Mike Alstott. He has also been part of 18 state championship broadcasts involving Joliet Catholic and Providence football.

Some of Slocum's most meaningful contributions have come through creating and organizing high school tournaments. He started the WJOL Boys Thanksgiving Classic, WJOL Girls Basketball Classic, WJOL Don Ladas Memorial Baseball Tournament and WJOL Softball Tourney, with all four continuing to provide memorable experiences and opportunities for student-athletes. JIM “TECK” TECKENBROCK

Jim “Teck” Teckenbrock spent nearly three decades as one of the most recognizable voices in high school sports throughout the Plano, Sandwich, Yorkville, and the surrounding communities. He becomes the first individual to receive the IHSA Distinguished Media Service Award posthumously, following his passing on June 25, 2025, at the age of 76. His illness was unable to dissipate his passion for high school sports, as Teck called the Oswego High School softball team’s IHSA Class 4A state championship game on the radio just 19 days prior to his passing.

A 1966 graduate of Plano High School, Teckenbrock attended Waubonsee Community College before transferring to Northern Illinois University. He returned to Waubonsee in 1977 as an instructor and coach, eventually becoming the school’s first womens basketball coach in 1979. He also coached softball, guiding the Chiefs to the 1982 Skyway Conference championship.

Teckenbrock’s coaching career led to his first broadcasting opportunities at WMRO in Aurora during the 1980s, where he provided game analysis. In 1996, he joined WSPY radio and began what would become a nearly 30-year career covering high school athletics. He was named the station’s Sports Director in 2001 and became a defining voice for student-athletes and sports fans throughout the area.

Teckenbrock’s broadcasting career included covering numerous IHSA State Finals and state championship teams. Among his most memorable assignments were calling the back-to-back state titles by the Plano football (2006 & 2007) and Hinckley-Big Rock girls basketball teams (2008-09, 2009-10), as well as the Newark boys basketball title run in 2011. He was inducted into the Basketball Museum of Illinois Hall of Fame in the Media category in 2014 and was widely respected by athletes, coaches and fans.

Known for his calm, cheerful delivery and genuine enthusiasm, Teckenbrock had a special ability to make listeners feel connected to the games he covered. Whether it was a state championship or the first game of a season, his excitement grew with the action. His broadcasts chronicled the triumphs and disappointments of generations of student-athletes and became a cherished connection for families who followed their children and grandchildren on the radio.

Teckenbrock’s love of sports extended well beyond the broadcast booth. He played baseball, fastpitch softball, and basketball and bowled in adult leagues, while also serving as an umpire for area schools and recreational leagues. He was a longtime participant and later announcer for the Illinois Special Olympics Polar Plunge and was honored as one of Waubonsee Community College’s Fab 40 and inducted into the Illinois High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame.
