Allendale Drops Pair To St. Joe

On Thursday, November 30th, the Allendale Yellow Jackets traveled to Olney to take on WEAA Conference foe St. Joe.  In the B-game, St. Joe won 36-6.  Scoring for the Yellow Jackets were:  JD Bowser with 2 points, Kollin Kelsey with 2 points, and Chase Gher with 2 points.  The B-team is now 3-3 on the season.

In the A-game, St. Joe defeated the Yellow Jackets 36-7.  Scoring for Allendale were:  JD Bowser with 3 points, Kollin Kelsey with 2 points, and Carlos Monroy with 2 points. The A-team is now 2-6 on the season.

Next up for the Yellow Jackets:  Thursday, December 7th at Cisne for WEAA Conference action.  C-game at 5:15 pm, with the B-game and A-game to follow.

WVC Splits With Lake Land

Wabash Valley basketball teams traveled to Mattoon Illinois Wednesday night and came away with a split with Lake Land College.

The Lady Warriors won 104 to 61 behind balanced scoring for Luke Scheidecker squad. Alexis Thomas had 16 points, Mariah McCully added 14 followed by DeAsia Outlaw with 13 and Ashley Moore had 12. Game was close in the first quarter before the Lady Warriors took the lead at the end of the quarter 24 to 19. They built on that lead and at half time were up 47 to 32. Start of the 3rd quarter they would go on a 20 to 9 run to put the game out of reach. WVC is now 7-1 and 2-0 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference while Lake Land falls to 5-3 and 1-2.

In the men’s game it was close all the way to the final buzzer. There was no more than four or five point difference during the game and most of the 40 minutes was played with two or three point difference. Half time Lake Land was up by one 49 to 48 as Tra Landers would hit one of two free throws right before the half. Second half the Lakers would jump out to a 57 to 51 advantage but WVC would come back and take the lead on an Antonio Givens rebound and basket. The score was tied 70 all with eight minutes to go and from there to the end of the game only one or two point separated the two teams. The Warriors would play the last five minutes without their leading scorer Austin Trice who was injured and finished the game with 30 points and 12 rebounds. Josh Thomas would hit a baseline basket to pull WVC to within one 92 to 91 and had a chance at the end of the game to win but the shot did not fall. LLC is now 7-2 and 2-0 while the Warriors are now 3-4 and 02 in the GRAC.

They play at home Saturday against Southwestern Illinois with the women playing at 5:30 and the men will tip off at 7:30

Coach Logan Crum's Comments

A good win for us as a team but they only had 5 wrestlers. Was a pretty quick night but there are still a lot things we can improve on here early in the season to make ourselves better all around wrestlers. We now turn our attention to the Lawrence County Tourney which is Saturday in Lawrenceville. A tournament we should fair well in as both individuals and as a team. 

SMS Girls Split With St. Joe's

On Wednesday, November 29th, the St. Mary’s Lady Rockets traveled to Olney St. Joe to take on the Lady Wildcats in a WEAA Conference game. St. Mary’s defeated Olney St. Joe, 33 – 28, to improve their overall season record to 9 – 5, and their conference record to 5 - 2. St. Mary’s got off to a slow start and trailed at the end of the first quarter 9 – 8, and 16 – 11 at halftime. The Lady Rockets were able take the lead at the end of the third quarter, 22 – 19. St. Mary’s outscored St. Joe 22 – 12 in the second half to help secure the win. Eden Wankel led St. Mary’s in scoring with 13 points. Savannah Zimmerman added 7 points, Olivia Stinson 6 points, Mady Young 4 points, and Emma Keepes 3 points. Olney St. Joe was led in scoring by Ryann Kleir with 9 points.

Olney St. Joe defeated St. Mary’s in the 7th grade game, 18 - 14. St. Mary’s lead 4 - 2 at the end of the first quarter; trailed 6 – 4 at halftime; and 10 - 8 at the end of the third quarter. Eden Wankel led St. Mary’s in scoring with 6 points. Lauren Hall and Anna Gill each scored 4 points to round out the scoring for the Lady Rockets. Danielle Clodfelter led the Lady Wildcats with 7 points.

St. Mary’s 8th grade team will begin the WEAA Conference Tournament at Jasper (Fairfield) Grade School on Monday, December 4th, at 7:15pm, when they play the New Hope Lady Panthers.

Aces Face Day School Tonight In Hilltop Opener

Coming off an overtime loss to Teutopolis Saturday night in the championship game of the Lawrence County Basketball Capital Classic, the Mt. Carmel Golden Aces play their home opener tonight against Evansville Day School. 

The Eagles are 1-0 on the year winning their season opener last Tuesday at Mt. Vernon 53-41.

On Monday, November 27th, the Allendale Yellow Jackets traveled to Mt. Aces Rip Red Hill To Set Up Showdown With T-Town

The Mt. Carmel Golden Aces ran away from Red Hill this morning to beat the Salukis 66-49 in the final game of pool play at 29th annual Lawrence County Basketball Capital Classic.

The Aces finish pool play with a perfect 3-0 record after winning both games on Friday. Brayden Stipp led the way with 17 points. 

In today's game, Mt. Carmel built a 22 point halftime lead that allowed coach Tyler Buss to rest starters for a good part of the second half in preparation of tonight's title game.

The win sets up a rematch in tonight's championship game against Teutopolis. The Aces beat the Wooden Shoes last year to capture the BCC title. Tonight's game is scheduled for 8pm at Red Hill High School in Bridgeport. The game can be heard on WSJD-FM 100.5 and on wsjd1005.com

Tyra's 22 Leads IU Past UAB

MORAGA, Calif.  – Senior guard Tyra Buss paced Indiana for the fifth-straight game as she tied a game-high 22 points and double-doubles from senior guard Amanda Cahill and junior forward Kym Royster to win 71-63 over UAB at the Hilton Concord Classic on Friday afternoon.
 
Buss added a team-high three assists and four rebounds as she shot 50 percent from the floor on the afternoon. She was joined in double figures by Cahill who notched her fifth-straight double-double which marks the best stretch of her career. The Clyde, Ohio native chipped in 14 points, added 12 rebounds, four blocks and two assists in the win. Royster turned in her third career double-double and second of the season with a 12 point, 13 rebound effort.
 
As a team, Indiana (4-1) shot 41.3 percent in the victory and earned the victory on the boards, 46-34, including a 16-10 advantage on the offensive glass that resulted in 16 second-chance points. But the Hoosiers struggled again from the free throw line, shooting just 52.2 percent and just 35 percent from 3-point range (7-for-20).
 
Freshman guard Jaelynn Penn added eight points and five rebounds while freshman guard Keyanna Warthen had seven points and three boards.
 
Indiana fell behind in the early portion of the first quarter before Buss used the glass in transition to cut the lead down to one with 3:48 left. Eventually tying it up at 16-all, a 3-pointer by Warthen made it a 19-16 advantage before the Blazers tied things up 19-19 to end the quarter.
 
UAB (3-1) stormed out in the second to take its largest lead of the game before six-straight points from the Hoosiers including a Buss bucket inside cut the margin down to one with 6:46 left in the period. Warthen was there for the cleanup to give IU a 30-29 lead but UAB countered with a 3-pointer to regain its lead.
 
But Indiana would hold the Blazers scoreless for the remaining 3:32 of the second quarter, as Cahill got off the last second three-point attempt that resulted in a foul. Sinking all three at the line, it would help put Indiana up 37-32 at the break.  
 
Coming out in the third, Royster would score back-to-back buckets as IU increased its lead to 10 less than two minutes in as Penn added a triple from the left baseline. Leading by as many as 11 in the third, Indiana would go up 53-44 heading into the final quarter. Upping its lead to as many as 15 with 6:18 remaining, the Blazers would make a comeback effort in the final three minutes of play. They would cut it to six, 67-61, with 1:45 remaining but Cahill's extra effort on a missed 3-point attempt by Warthen gave IU the ball back and a new 30-second shot clock with 1:09 remaining.
 
One in the bonus by Buss followed by both from Warthen helped IU extend its lead back up to nine with 37 seconds remaining. Warthen came up with an offensive board with 17 seconds remaining, helping secure the win.

"At times, I thought we did some good things and at times we left points out there. We were miserable from the free throw line and that's something we are going to have to focus on and get better at. I thought Tyra (Buss), (Amanda) Cahill, and (Kym) Royster did some really good things today. Some of the things that Amanda does don't show up on the stat sheet as far as her hustle. I thought Tyra made plays when we needed to make plays and Kym was our anchor on the low block. Overall, it was great we could bounce back after a night like we had on Monday and we have to get ready for a good Saint Mary's team tomorrow."

• Senior guard Tyra Buss became the seventh player in school history to record 1,700 career points with her 22-point performance. She now holds 1,713 points which ranks seventh all-time
• Junior forward Kym Royster secured her third career double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. It marks the second double-double for her this season.
• Senior forward Amanda Cahill recorded her fifth-consecutive double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, which marks the most consecutive double-doubles in her career.

Aces Blast Olney To Open Season

Mt. Carmel opened defense of their Lawrence County Basketball Capital Classic title by blasting Olney this afternoon 59-26 at Red Hill High School.

The Aces got off to a slow start and trailed the Tigers midway through the first quarter. But, a big surge blew the game open before halftime when MCHS led 33-11.

Mt. Carmel now plays at 6pm tonight against Salem. The Wildcats beat Red Hill in today's first game. You can listen to tonight's game on WSJD-FM 100.5 and on wsjd1005.com.

Aces Open 2017-18 Season Today

After a 2nd place finish in the Class 2A State Tournament, the Mt. Carmel Golden Aces open the 2017-18 season today at the 29th annual Lawrence County Basketball Capital Classic.

The Aces play Olney at 12:30pm this afternoon and Salem at 6pm. Both games are at Red Hill High School in Bridgeport.

SMS Girls Rout Cisne

On Tuesday, November 21st, the St. Mary’s Lady Rockets traveled to Cisne to take on the Lady Bullets. In the 8th grade game, St. Mary’s defeated Cisne, 32 - 8. St. Mary’s led 16 - 0 at the end of the first quarter; 21 - 4 at halftime; and 28 - 8 at the end of the third quarter. Olivia Stinson scored 10 points to lead St. Mary’s in scoring. Savannah Zimmerman added 9 points, Mady Young 5 points, Maleah Armstrong 2 points, Emma Keepes 2 points, Lauren Hall 2 points, Eden Wankel 1 point, and Lindy Rafferty 1 point. Hedrick and Beckel scored 4 points each for Cisne.

St. Mary’s defeated Cisne in the 7th grade game, 20 - 2. The Lady Rockets led 6 - 0 at the end of the first quarter; 12 - 0 at halftime; and 18 - 2 at the end of the third quarter. Eden Wankel and Lexi Stevens led St. Mary’s in scoring with 5 points each. Lauren Hall scored 4 points, Nora Jones 4 points, and Sarah McCorkle 2 points. Tyra's 17 Not Enough As IU Falls For 1st Time

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.  – Seniors Tyra Buss and Amanda Cahill paced Indiana Women's Basketball with another pair of double-doubles, but it wasn't enough as a big third quarter sent Chattanooga to victory, 64-61, on Monday night at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
 
Buss led with 17 points and dished out 10 assists for her ninth career double-double. Cahill's 10 rebounds were a game-high as she added 11 points from the floor to go along with two steals, a block and assist. Junior forward Kym Royster tallied 16 points and grabbed six boards but Indiana shot just 40 percent including a 21.4 percent clip from 3-point range. They also struggled from the line, going 10-for-18 to finish 55.6 percent on the night.
 
Indiana (3-1) fell behind by four in the first half before a 7-2 run sparked the Hoosiers as Buss found a cutting Royster who scored and completed the and-1. Marchese scored her first career points as she also completed the and-1 to give IU a 9-8 lead with 4:08 to play. Going up by five after a Penn steal and Buss feed to sophomore forward Bre Wickware, IU would take a 15-11 lead after one complete.
 
Early on in the second quarter, they would take their largest lead of the game but Chattanooga would pull ahead in the next four minutes to regain a 21-20 lead with 5:19 to play. However, battling back into it IU closed the half on a 7-0 run, five of those points coming from Buss, and take a 27-23 lead at the break.
 
An 8-0 run by the Mocs (2-3) would open the third quarter, as IU was outscored 22-15 in the frame. Despite the advantage for UTC, three score changes would be featured in the third quarter including a 38-36 lead after a transition layup from Buss on a dish from Cahill. Tied up at 40-40 with 2:03 left, a 3-pointer and last second bucket by Aryanna Gilbert gave Chattanooga 45-42 lead.
 
In the fourth, IU faced a nine-point deficit in the opening minute and a half of play before IU chipped away on a triple by Cahill and a pair at the line for Buss.  Neither team scored for a two-minute stretch late into the quarter as Royster got IU to within two, 52-50, with 3:32 to play. The Mocs would push its lead back up to seven with under a minute to play before an and-1 one by Royster with 49 ticks remaining.
 
With both teams in the double bonus and Indiana forced to foul, Chattanooga hit five free throws in the final 40 seconds despite the valiant effort of a 3-pointer by Buss with nine seconds remaining cut it down to 63-61. UTC would get another at the line as IU set up for a final 3-point attempt to tie the game by Buss, but the ball rimmed in and out as time expired.

"I am disappointed obviously. I thought from the beginning, we always talk about the first four minutes and we can never get anything going. I though we looked lethargic for pretty much 40 minutes. And I don't know what to attribute that too, but a lot of people want to give me the excuse that it's because I have young kids But I don't buy that. So, I'm disappointed in the way that we performed for 40 minutes. But you have to show up to win games and I thought tonight we didn't show up."

• Kym Royster scored in double figures for the fourth straight game and 12th career game with 16 points.
• Trailing 51-42 in the fourth quarter at the 8:33 mark, Indiana held Chattanooga without a field goal for five minutes and 29 seconds and closed the gap to three at 52-49 with 5:37 to play in the game.

Indiana will spend Thanksgiving in California when it takes part in the Hilton Concord Classic hosted by Saint Mary's on Friday and Saturday. They will face UAB on Black Friday and the host Gaels on Saturday.

Allendale Picks Up 1st Win Of Season

On Monday, November 20th, the Allendale Yellow Jackets hosted a tournament with West Salem and New Hebron.  In Game 1, the Yellow Jackets defeated West Salem by the score of 38-23.  Scoring for the Yellow Jackets were:  Bryce Lane with 12 points, Kollin Kelsey with 12 points, Trent Casburn with 9 points, and JD Bowser with 5 points.  In game 2, New Hebron defeated West Salem.  So, this set up the Championship game between New Hebron and the Allendale Yellow Jackets.  New Hebron defeated Allendale 39-9.  Scoring for the Yellow Jackets were:  Bryce Lane with 4 points, Kollin Kelsey with 3 points, and JD Bowser with 2 points.  Final results for the tournament:  New Hebron 2-0, Allendale 1-1, and West Salem 0-2.

For the Yellow Jackets, the A-team is now 1-5 on the season.  Next up:  Yellow Jackets will travel to St. Mary's on Monday, November 27th starting at 5:15 pm with a C-game.  Monday will also be Pack the Place Night at St. Mary's.  All students bringing a can good will get in free.

On Monday, November 20th, the St. Mary’s Lady Rockets hosted the Olney St. Joe Lady Wildcats on 8th Grade Recognition Night. Maleah Armstrong, Olivia Stinson, and Emma Keepes were recognized prior to the game. St. Mary’s defeated Olney St. Joe, 24 - 19. St. Mary’s got off to a slow start and trailed at the end of the first quarter 9 – 2, and 15 – 11 at halftime. The Lady Rockets were able take the lead at the end of the third quarter, 20 – 17. St. Mary’s defense held Olney St. Joe to 4 points in the second half. Savannah Zimmerman scored 10 points to lead St. Mary’s in scoring. Olivia Stinson added 8 points, Emma Keepes 4 points, and Eden Wankel 2 points. Olney St. Joe was led in scoring by Anndyn Fairless with 11 points. St. Mary’s defeated Olney St. Joe in the 7th grade game, 14 - 12. St. Mary’s lead 5 - 4 at the end of the first quarter; 11 – 4 at halftime; and 13 – 10 at the end of the third quarter. Tyra's Last Second Layup Beats WKU

 Senior guard Tyra Buss split two defenders and sealed the game winner with just three ticks remaining as Indiana Women's Basketball upended Western Kentucky, 73-71, on Friday night in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
 
Four Hoosiers scored in double figures including Buss's 22 points as she also dished out four assists. Senior forward Amanda Cahill notched her third-straight double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds to go along with six assists. Freshman guard Jaelynn Penn earned her first career double-double with 10 points and 11 board while junior forward Kym Royster dropped 17 points and added six rebounds, including five rebounds.
 
As a team, IU shot 42.2 percent from the floor and 70 percent from the line but struggled from long range (21.7 percent). They grabbed 16 offensive boards and led in rebounding, 44-35. They picked up 26 second chance points and dished out 14 assists.
 
Indiana (3-0) led by as many as four in the first quarter, but fell silent the final 2:09 of the quarter as the Lady Toppers (1-3) went on an 8-0 run to lead 24-19.  Facing its largest lead of the game in the second quarter with 5:51 remaining, the Hoosiers would get a boost from Royster and a pair at the line by Cahill to shave down the double-digit deficit. Battling its way into the break, Cahill drained a big 3-pointer from Buss with 53 seconds left in the quarter before grabbing an offensive board and getting the fouled on the putback. Sinking one of two at the line, Indiana trailed 36-31 at halftime.
 
The third quarter belonged to the Cream and Crimson, outscoring WKU 29-13 by shooting 50 percent in the frame.  Buss started off the third with one of her two 3-pointers of the night off a feed from Cahill. Freshman guard Bendu Yeaney tied the game up at 38-38 after her drive to the bucket earned her a pair at the line. Ignited by Royster, a 5-0 run forced a Lady Topper timeout as Indiana increased its lead up to 11, 52-41 with 4:36 to play.
 
Royster once again gave IU a boost, with a feed from Penn with 1:25 to play gave them its largest lead of the game, 60-45. Western Kentucky staged a comeback in the fourth, chipping away at the Hoosiers' lead with 5:38 remaining in the game. They would close the gap on a pair of layups by Sidnee Bopp and tied the game up at the line with 2:37 to play.
 
A steal by WKU led to a basket and a 71-68 lead before Buss took over. Her 3-pointer from the left win on a feed from Penn at the top of the key tied up the game at 71-all with 1:15 left on the clock. A missed layup by the Lady Toppers with 50 second remaining gave IU the ball back.
 
With fouls to give, WKU foul three times, eventually give the Hoosiers the final possession with 15 seconds remaining. Setting up, Buss drove to the lane, splitting the defense and getting the floater to fall with just three seconds left. Following a WKU timeout and ball advancement, they would get a final look at the basket but the shot would rim out as the buzzer sounded.

"This was a really good win. We just beat a really good team, they have been in the NCAA tournament the last two years and have won their conference. I would suspect that they are going to do the same thing this year. Well coached, they have a lot of weapons, and in the first quarter it didn't seem like they were going to miss. We made some adjustments defensively. Instead of switching, we just decided to fight like heck to get over ball screens. Give our kids credit for one, being able to make the change and make the adjustment, and then just their overall toughness. I am really just proud of how hard they played. Make no mistake, we made a lot of errors their and mistakes, but I am really happy for our team and how they played when they got down. The third quarter was obviously really big for us and then the fourth quarter was back and forth. I didn't anticipate anything in terms of getting away from this team, I knew they were going to make a run, which they did. The good thing is that we had the last shot, and that's what we wanted. I didn't think that Tyra was going to miss that last free throw, but nonetheless we did a great job defensively. They got a look, but it wasn't as clean of a look as they probably wanted."
 
NOTABLE

• Senior guard Tyra Buss logged 40 minutes and led the Hoosiers with 22 points, her third 20-point game this year.
• Buss delivered in the clutch for the Hoosiers, scoring a tying 3-pointer with 1:11 left in the fourth quarter and Indiana's game-winning layup with three seconds remaining.
• Senior forward Amanda Cahill recorded her third double-double of the season (15 points, 13 rebounds) and the 32ndof her career, tying Whitney Thomas (2006-09) for the fourth most double-doubles in program history.
• Over Cahill's career, the Hoosiers are 23-9 when she earns a double-double.
• Junior forward Kym Royster scored a season-high 17 points with seven rebounds. Royster was flawless from the field at halftime (3-for-3) and made her first seven field goal attempts without a miss.
• Freshman guard Jaelynn Penn notched her first career double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds). Both figures are season highs for Penn.  
• Indiana uncorked a 23-6 scoring run that lasted 9:51, stretching from the middle of the second quarter to the middle of the third quarter. Cahill led the effort with six of her 13 first half points and eight points in total during the run.
• The Hoosiers found another important scoring run in the third quarter, a 17-5 streak over four minutes, with seven points coming from Royster. It gave Indiana an 11-point lead entering the final quarter.
• Indiana won the battle on the boards with a 44-35 rebound advantage, earning a +11 rebound differential for the second time this season.
• Indiana collected 16 rebounds, a season high, which led to a season-best 26 second chance points.
• In all three games this season, Indiana had at least four players achieve double-digit scoring figures.
• Teri Moren is now 21-1 in home regular season non-conference games as Indiana's head coach.
• The Hoosiers have won their last 16 non-conference home games, and haven't dropped an out-of-conference regular season game in Bloomington since November 30, 2014.

SMS Lady Rockets Basketball

On Friday, November 17th, the St. Mary’s Lady Rockets hosted the Jasper (Fairfield) Grade School Lady Polecats. In the 8th grade game, Jasper defeated St. Mary’s, 42 - 31. St. Mary’s trailed 16 – 11 at the end of the first quarter; 26 - 18 at halftime; and 33 - 24 at the end of the third quarter. Savannah Zimmerman scored 9 points to lead St. Mary’s in scoring. Mady Young added 8 points, Emma Keepes 6 points, Maleah Armstrong 5 points, Olivia Stinson 2 points, and Lauren Hall 1 point. Jasper was led in scoring by Valorie Dagg with 24 points. Jasper defeated St. Mary’s in the 7th grade game, 23 - 17. Jasper lead 7 - 6 at the end of the first quarter; St. Mary’s led at halftime 11 - 7; and Jasper regained the lead at the end of third quarter 23 – 13. Nora Jones led St. Mary’s in scoring with 6 points. Lauren Hall scored 4 points, Mady Young 3 points, Sarah McCorkle 2 points, and Kali Walker 2 points. Also seeing playing time included Lexi Stevens, Lindy Rafferty, Olivia Trimble, Nevada Brown, Madison Stevens, and Ava Turner. Emilee Cline led the Lady Polecats with 8 points. St. Mary’s will celebrate 8th Grade Recognition Night on Monday, November 20th, when they host Olney St. Joe. The 7th grade game will begin at 6pm, and Maleah Armstrong, Olivia Stinson, and Emma Keepes will be recognized prior to the start of the 8th grade game.
