Wabash Valley basketball teams traveled to Mattoon Illinois Wednesday night and came away with a split with Lake Land College.
The Lady Warriors won 104 to 61 behind balanced scoring for Luke Scheidecker squad. Alexis Thomas had 16 points, Mariah McCully added 14 followed by DeAsia Outlaw with 13 and Ashley Moore had 12. Game was close in the first quarter before the Lady Warriors took the lead at the end of the quarter 24 to 19. They built on that lead and at half time were up 47 to 32. Start of the 3rd quarter they would go on a 20 to 9 run to put the game out of reach. WVC is now 7-1 and 2-0 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference while Lake Land falls to 5-3 and 1-2.
In the men’s game it was close all the way to the final buzzer. There was no more than four or five point difference during the game and most of the 40 minutes was played with two or three point difference. Half time Lake Land was up by one 49 to 48 as Tra Landers would hit one of two free throws right before the half. Second half the Lakers would jump out to a 57 to 51 advantage but WVC would come back and take the lead on an Antonio Givens rebound and basket. The score was tied 70 all with eight minutes to go and from there to the end of the game only one or two point separated the two teams. The Warriors would play the last five minutes without their leading scorer Austin Trice who was injured and finished the game with 30 points and 12 rebounds. Josh Thomas would hit a baseline basket to pull WVC to within one 92 to 91 and had a chance at the end of the game to win but the shot did not fall. LLC is now 7-2 and 2-0 while the Warriors are now 3-4 and 02 in the GRAC.
They play at home Saturday against Southwestern Illinois with the women playing at 5:30 and the men will tip off at 7:30
