Fred Xanders, 93

Fred Xanders, 93, of Allendale, Illinois passed away peacefully at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Indiana. He was born on March 7, 1932, in Mt. Carmel, Illinois to Fred Xanders, Sr. and Dorothy Inez (Pearson) Xanders.

In 1950, he graduated from Mt. Carmel High School. Fred married June Couch on February 14, 1953, at Fort McClellan Army Base in Anniston, Alabama. Fred and June were blessed with 72 wonderful years of marriage together.

Corporal Fred L. Xanders proudly served his country at Fort McClellan Army Base in Anniston, Alabama and at the Army Chemical Center in Aberdeen, Maryland from 1952-1954. He also played on the Army Chemical Center Football Team in 1952.

He worked many different jobs throughout his lifetime. Fred retired from GTE telephone company as a pay station collector. He also worked for Dowell Oil Well Service and Wabash County Schools as a Janitor and Maintenance man. He was also a carpenter/woodworking man and a meat cutter as well. Fred worked as a USDA meat inspector for over 30 years, and he did custom butchering and smoked meat. Beekeeping and gardening were also his passion throughout his life.

For many years he and his wife June owned and operated concession trailers that they worked at local auctions, fairs, and M.C.H.S. football games. FAT FREDDIES (their food trailer) was loved by all! They also catered for weddings, family reunions, class reunions and birthday parties. Fred and June volunteered at the Orio Chowder fundraiser for many years as well.

Fred was always willing to give back to his community and volunteered as Little League Coach during the summer months.

One of his favorite pastimes was fishing. He made many trips to Kentucky Lake with all his buddies.

Fred is survived by his wife, June I. Xanders, children; Greg L. (Pattie) Xanders, Kevin L. Xanders, Misty K. (Paul) Kieffer, grandson, Kyle (Taylor) Kieffer

Preceding him in death were his parents; and sisters; Mary (Bill) Guinty, Joan (Bob) Mace, and Thelma (Jack) Bosaw.

Visitation will be held Thursday, September 11, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Short-Cunningham Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 11, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Short-Cunningham Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Adams Corner Cemetery.
