Roma Jean Tombaugh, 93, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away Friday, July 16, 2021, at Villas of Holly Brook, surrounded by the love of her family.
She was born Dec. 13, 1927, in Huntingburg, Indiana, the daughter of Melvin and Retta Marie Pierce Smith. She is a graduate of Princeton Community High School class of 1946. She was married to Dr. Donald R. Tombaugh on April 16, 1948, in Mt. Carmel. He passed away May 25, 2018, after seventy years of marriage. Roma enjoyed spending quality time with her family; was a very loving wife, mother, grandma and great grandma.
Roma was a member of the EUM Church in Mt. Carmel. She was a homemaker. Prior to beginning her family, she worked as a bookkeeper for Skiles Oil Company, and secretary at Pacific Press and Shear. Her favorite time was spent with family.
Left to cherish Roma’s memory are her children Peggy Jean Caldari and husband Joe of Ormond Beach, FL and Ann Marie Schurman and her husband Steve of Mt. Carmel; Grandma to Jessica Jean (Alex) Schalasky, Jordan Craig (Chelsey) Schurman, Amanda Caldari, and Joey Caldari; Great Grandma to Mia Rose and Owen Ray Schalasky and Rhett Bradley Schurman and Aunt to two devoted nephews, Bruce Smith and Steven Smith.
Roma is preceded in death by her parents; husband of seventy years, Dr. Donald R. Tombaugh; brother, Melvin Lee Smith; infant granddaughter, Charissa Johnson; and infant daughter, Diane Tombaugh.
A Graveside Service will be held Sunday, July 18, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. with burial next to her husband at Highland Memorial Cemetery.
The family requests memorials be made to EUM Church instead of gifts of food or flowers. Donation envelopes will be available at the cemetery and Short-Cunningham Funeral Home.
