Larry Douglas “Doug” Peterson, 64

Larry Douglas “Doug” Peterson, 64, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away Monday, November 8, 2021, at River Oaks Health Campus in Princeton, Indiana, surrounded by his loving family.  He was born on December 29, 1956, in Mount Carmel, the son of Larry Edwin and Rosanna (Alka) Peterson. 

Doug was a member of the Mount Carmel High School Graduating Class of 1974. He was a four-year athlete playing football and basketball, first when he attended Highland High School and then Mount Carmel High School.  In 1974, Doug earned the nickname, “The Toe”, after kicking a field goal in the Mount Carmel playoff game against Quincy Catholic High School, bringing the Aces to a 3 – 0 semi-final victory in overtime. He remained a huge fan of Aces Football his entire life.  He also was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers Football Team.  Doug was a big-time music lover.  Among his favorites were, The Allman Brothers, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Widespread Panic.  In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking.  Doug was of Christian faith and a member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ.  He greatly enjoyed volunteering to work with the youth groups on Wednesday nights.  He was a very proud family man and loved his whole family dearly.  He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Doug leaves behind his mother; loving wife, Mary; children, Lauren Berberich and husband Daniel, Sydney Peterson; Annie Russell, Josh Keepes and wife, Bonnie, Nick Lockhart, J.P. Mendenhall; sisters, Alisa Gidcumb and husband Michael, Susan Peterson; many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and extended family.

Doug was preceded in death by his father; grandparents, Imogene and Russell Peterson, Melva and Gilbert Alka; brothers-in-law, Leon Leeper and Charles Sid Rutter.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 20, 2021, in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home with Pastor Tony Hodgson officiating.

Family and friends may gather for a Visitation from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 20, 2021, in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home.
