Betty Jean (Hartman) Taylor, 95

Betty Jean (Hartman) Taylor, 95, formerly of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2019, in Plainfield, Indiana.

Betty was born on March 29, 1923, in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, the daughter of Harry E. and Mary (Wirth) Hartman. She married Hubert Taylor on June 28, 1941, in St. Louis, Missouri.  He preceded her in death in 2002.

Betty’s early work experience included the Home Dairy and Mt. Carmel Public Utility.  She later worked as a cook for several schools, Funkhouser’s Diner and the Senior Citizen’s Center.  She also worked as a clerk at Wright’s Grocery and P.N. Hirsch. 

Betty was a long-time member of the First Christian Church in Mt. Carmel.  She sang in the church choir, taught Sunday school and belonged to the quilting group.  She enjoyed quilting, painting, gardening and visiting with her family and friends.  Betty was a sweetheart, who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include four daughters, Linda (Tony) Perillo of Phoenix, Arizona; Jan (Randy) Sheffer of White Heath, Illinois; Kim Stephens of Phoenix, Arizona; and Marilee (Jim) Steckler of Plainfield, Indiana; grandchildren, Gina Perillo; Sarah (Michael) Marshky; Julie (Bobby) Dalessandro; Hillary (James) Barclay; and Ben (Kelly) Steckler; and seven great-grandchildren.   

Also preceding her in death were her parents, Harry and Mary (Wirth) Hartman; an infant son; a daughter, Diana Brown; a granddaughter, Susan Kay Brown; a grandson, Peter Taylor Lewis; a sister, Alice Corrie; and a brother, Col. Jay Hartman.

Visitation will be held Saturday, February 2, at 11:00 a.m. followed by funeral services at 1:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Home, 527 N Mulberry Street, Mt. Carmel, Illinois.  Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery.
