ROBERT N. “BOB” MAIR

Robert N. “Bob” Mair passed away Thursday, November 2, 2017 at Oakview Heights Nursing Home comforted by family and staff.

He was born in Clinton, Indiana on May 9, 1924 to Mary Florence (Whitted) and Adam Mair. Bob enlisted in the Navy right out of high school and served as quarter master aboard the Cacoctin during WWII in both theaters. 

In June 1946 he spied his future wife sitting at the counter at a local restaurant in Princeton, Indiana. He set a new course and Betty Ruth Riley married him on December 31, 1946. They settled in Mt. Carmel and were active in their community and church, Trinity United Methodist Church. Bob worked at Lambert and Hood, Whirlpool and Wabash Courthouse drawing maps. From there he ran and was elected County Treasurer, Sheriff and Treasurer again. He then began his employment as a field representative for Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund. He retired from there in November 1989.

During their retirement Betty and Bob spent sixteen winters in Florida. During the springs and summers Bob’s time was spent in his garden. Many people in Wabash County enjoyed the fruits of his labor. He also loved fishing in Minnesota.

During their 70 years of marriage Bob and Betty had a daughter Roberta Kay Talley and a son Scott Mair. They also have a very special son in law John Talley.

They were blessed with four grandchildren Brian (Jamie) Talley, Brent Talley, Adam (Ashley) Mair and Tyler (Tiffany Johnson) Mair. Even more blessings came with the births of their great-grandchildren Sam Talley, Will Talley, Clare Talley, Adam Mair, Jr. and another great-grandson Mair due this month. 

Bob was a 64 year member of Trinity United Methodist Church, member of Masonic Lodge #239 since 1946, member of Shriners International, life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and of Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite 32 Degree Masons Valley of Danville.

Bob is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brother Chuck (Joyce) Mair and many special nieces, nephews and cousins. 

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation for Bob will be Monday, November 6, 2017, from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. at Short Funeral Home, 527 N. Mulberry Street. Funeral services will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m. with burial at Highland Memorial Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or the Mt. Carmel Honor Guard. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
