Slow Down! MCPD Writing Speeding Tickets In City Park

Increased patrols by Mt. Carmel Police in the city park caused by recent vandalism to restrooms has also placed a new emphasis on speeding. Mayor Joe Judge said the city park’s 10 mile an hour speed limit is designed to protect park visitors which have increased dramatically the last couple of years. This past weekend, Judge said two tickets were issued by officers to park speeders.

The city council also discussed the possibility of placing a stop sign at the exit of the park’s loop near the golf cart crossing between holes 1 and 10. An ordinance would be needed if the council decides a stop sign is needed there.

Gas Leak Found At Wabash County Jail

On 04.18.23 Wabash County Jail staff detected what they thought was a possible natural gas smell within the jail. Mt. Carmel Public Utility was immediately contacted to check the jail for a leak. MCPU determined there was in fact a leak in the basement area of the jail, that had traveled to the lobby area.

The gas was shut off to the building and all inmates were transported to the White Co. Jail in Carmi, Illinois. The leak was isolated to the front area of the jail not affecting any populated areas of the jail.

Once the leak has been repaired the jail will be back in service.

If you need to contact a Wabash County inmate, the White Co. Jail number is 618-382-7149 or go to their website at www.whitecountyjail.com

City ID's Rock Culprit: Asks For Better Parent Supervision Of Kids In Park

Mayor Joe Judge is asking parents to supervise their children when they visit the city park. Last week, one of the toilets in the new restrooms at the city park was filled with rocks. Security cameras helped identify the source of the rocks…

Judge said it cost more than $300 to remove the rocks after city equipment was unable to clear them out and a plumber had to be called.

Supreme Court Justice To Swear In New City Council

An Illinois Supreme Court justice will be in Mt. Carmel next month to swear in the new city council and mayor to new terms. On May 1st, Justice David Overstreet will administer the oaths of office on May 1st to commissioners Susan Zimmerman, Tom Meeks, Eric Ikemire, and Tyson Meador and Mayor Joe Judge to four-year terms. It’s the first time a Supreme Court justice has sworn in Mt. Carmel office holders.

And with the seating of the new council, it looks like there may be a shuffling of supervision among the commissioners. The reward for being the top vote getter in this month’s election is having first choice on which department the commissioners will be in charge of. That honor went to Susan Zimmerman who told us on election night she will remain as fire and garbage commissioner.  On Friday’s “Ask The Mayor” segment, Joe Judge said current street commissioner Tom Meeks will assume Justin Dulgar’s role as water and sewer commissioner and incoming commissioner Tyson Meador will take over for Meeks as street commissioner. Ikemire will remain finance commissioner.
