WVC LIBRARY CONTINUES ITS SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY THROUGH DIGITIZATION PROJECTS

After the completion of scanning and editing of the WVC yearbooks, Commencement programs, archives, and 105 years of the MCHS yearbook, WVC Library staff have begun four new digital projects.  Current projects include documenting the MCHS Boys’ Basketball Team’s journey to the State Finals, the WVC Baseball Team’s trip to the NJCAA World Series, WVC Men’s Basketball scorebooks and photos, and the Edwards County/West Salem High School yearbooks.

After completion, the digital projects will reside on the WVC Library homepage and be hosted on servers at the University of Illinois.  All of the information will be available to anyone anywhere via the web.

The MCHS Basketball project will include memories of players, coaches, and staff of the exciting 2016-17 season which culminated in a State Final appearance, as well as photos and other memorabilia of the season.

Anyone who would like to contribute photos or programs from the Regionals, Sectionals, Super-Sectional, or the State Finals can call Sandy Craig at 618-263-5097 for more information.

The Edwards County High School Edwardian and the West Salem High School Hi-Lite yearbooks are also needed.  We currently have 1944-1949 of the Hi-Lite and would welcome any others that may have been published.  We need the following years of the Edwardian:  1952, 1954, 1955, 1956, 2016, and 2017 plus any earlier publications of the Albion High School yearbook.  If you have copies of any missing years or earlier copies, please call Sandy Craig at 618-263-5097 for more information.  Items loaned will be scanned and returned to their owners as quickly as possible.

Items already digitized, such as the WVC yearbooks and the MCHS yearbooks, can be accessed by going to www.iecc.edu/wvc/lrc and selecting “IECC CARLI Digital Collections.”

Cohan, and two star performers, Sophie Tucker and Ma Rainey from the years 1914-1919.  On the other side of the ocean, we meet a loving English couple; Jack, a soldier who writes letters home from the front lines and letters from his sweetheart, Bess, as she awaits his return.

CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS PREPARE STUDENTS FOR JOBS

Career and Technical Education (CTE) prepares individuals for high-skilled, in-demand employment that furthers Illinois’ global competitiveness.  Last year, roughly two-thirds (62.2%) of all Illinois community college graduates earned a CTE degree or certificate.  CTE programs offer flexible scheduling, work-based learning, and stackable credentials that provide a pathway from education to employment not only for recent high school graduates, but also for returning adults, veterans, and incumbent workers.  Success in CTE programming is amplified by academic support services, work-based learning opportunities, and business engagement.  CTE’s reach in Illinois’ workforce continues to be expansive; currently, there are over 4,300 different CTE program offerings across the community college system.

Wabash Valley College joins with community colleges throughout the State to celebrate Career and Technical Education Month.  Commenting on Career Technical Education, WVC’s Dean of Instruction Robert Conn said…. “Career Technical Education (CTE) provides students of all ages with the skills necessary to succeed and technical knowledge vital to a community’s economic health.  Wabash Valley College’s CTE programs have evolved into fields of study that encompass applied sciences, modern technologies, and career preparation.  With the nationwide shortages of skilled workers, graduates of CTE programs are finding themselves well positioned for entry into the labor market.

“Some of WVC’s popular CTE programs include:  Advanced Manufacturing, Agricultural Technologies, Nursing, Diesel Technologies, Early Childhood Education, Gunsmithing, Marketing Business Management, Music and Media, Radio/TV and Digital Media, Social Services Specialist, Sport Management, Sports Marketing and Media, and Truck Driving.  CTE prepares these students for their careers by introducing them to workplace competencies and academic content accessible in a hands-on context.  Our faculty and staff at WVC are dedicated to helping students explore their career goals and opportunities, and CTE programs continue to provide pathways to employment.”

“Anyone interested in getting into a career that pays well and is in high demand should look into CTE programs.  CTE programs are working with business and industry leaders around the State to fill their needs for skilled employees,” said ICCB Executive Director Dr. Karen Hunter Anderson.

Wabash Rally Against Cancer

After the Relay for Life event held in June, 2017, the committee decided to start a local committee called Wabash Rally Against Cancer (WRAC).

The mission of WRAC is to work with individuals and families to improve the quality of life, while helping to build healthier lives for people affected by cancer.  The goal of the organization is to financially help the people in Wabash County during their battle with cancer.  Instead of having a Relay for Life event this year with the American Cancer Society, the committee plans to do a fall festival event to raise funds to kick start the ability to assist our local community members with their fight against cancer.  Details regarding this event will be announced at a later date.

If you would be interested in having a team at this event, please contact Robin Dean at 618-263-5210.

The current board members of WRAC are as follows:  Gloria Reed, President; Danielle Stevens, Vice-President; Sandy Craig, Secretary; Robin Dean Treasurer; and Liz Dunn and Bridget Shepard, both at-large representatives.  If you or someone you know would be interested in assisting WRAC with the fight against cancer in Wabash County, please contact Robin Dean at 618-263-5210.
