Wabash County Property Tax Sale Next Week

The Wabash County delinquent property tax sale is quickly approaching, but there’s still time to pay your taxes before it’s sold. According to treasurer Beverly McBride, the tax sale will be Friday, February 16th at 10am in the courtroom.

There are still 177 parcels amounting to $117,845.61 in delinquent taxes still to be paid. As of midnight tomorrow, credit card payments will no longer be accepted and you can’t write a personal check for your late taxes.

According to McBride, some Wabash County taxpayers are already getting a jump on this year’s taxes. She said pre-payments are being accepted in her office and so far, $157,408 has been collected.

Currently, the state owes the county $14,288.08 for those salaries for February along with an unknown amount for income tax.

County Still Waiting On One Restaurant To Renew Food Service License

All Wabash County restaurants have valid food service licenses except for one…Rub ‘Em Right Bar-Be-Que. At tonight’s county commissioner meeting, health department administrator Judy Wissel said all other restaurants have renewed their licenses for 2018 with the lone exception of Rub ‘Em Right. Wissel said her office has been in contact with the owners about the situation….

Normally, Wissel said the matter would have been turned over to the state’s attorney office for action.  But since Cassandra Goldman is on medical leave, that process has been delayed for the time being.

Two Oaktown Women Die in Early Morning Incident

Knox County – At approximately 1:00 this morning, two Oaktown women died after the vehicle they were riding in inadvertently drove off an embankment and into the Wabash River while four-wheeling in a field.

The driver of the military Humvee, Kyle Mason, 34, and a passenger, Cody Meeks, 33, were able to get out of the vehicle and swim to the embankment. Kyle’s wife, Breezie, 33, and Cody’s wife, Meaghan, 32, were not able to get out.  The two men ran approximately 1 ½ miles back to Mason’s residence to get help, but the residence did not have a telephone and both of their phones were in the river. Mason was able to get another four-wheel drive vehicle and drove back to the scene to attempt to locate his wife and friend. Meeks ran to a nearby residence to call for help.

Emergency crews from numerous agencies responded. Divers located the vehicle, but due to a strong current they had a difficult time securing and removing it from the Wabash River.  At approximately 10:30 this morning, crews located both women when they pulled the vehicle to the surface.

Indiana State Police and Knox County Coroner Brian Hagen are currently investigating this incident. Foul play is not suspected. Autopsies are scheduled for tomorrow.

 Deceased:

  • Breezie Mason, 33, 12221 North Blann Road, Oaktown, IN
  • Meaghan, 32, 11137 North Parish Road, Oaktown, IN

The Indiana State Police, Indiana Conservation Officers and Vincennes Township Divers were responsible for locating the vehicle and recovering both females.

Assisting Agencies: Knox County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana Conservation Officers, Washington Township Fire Department, Vincennes City Fire, Vincennes Township Fire Department and Oaktown-Busseron Twp. Fire Department
