There’s no doubt that a lot of the state highways that run through Mt. Carmel are in bad shape and getting worse. What is in doubt though is when the state will do anything to fix them. Mayor Joe Judge said he had recently met with state officials on the DOT’s 5 year road program in Mt. Carmel.
First off, the project to replace the Cherry Street Bridge is due to be let for bids in November with construction scheduled to begin next year….
The state estimates the project to take 30 to 60 days to complete. Once closed, the Route 1 detour will be from Poor Farm Road to outer Friendsville Road and then into College Drive.
As for 9th Street….the state will repave it from Cherry Street west to past Rural King, but not until 2024. The long delay is caused by 38 different sidewalk entry points on the highway that need to be made ADA compliant before the repaving can start.
