From Coach Walker and Coach Fisher:
On Thursday September 12 the SMS/AJH Softball team took on Wayne City at home. The Lady Rockets would come away with a 15-5 win in 5 innings. Bella Andrews would walk the first batter who would go on to score. The first out was a connect from Lyla Keepes to Nora Jones at first. Andrews would strike out the next two batters. Bottom of the first was a huge inning for the girls. They would score 9 runs (Keepes, Kali Walker, Jones, Lauren Fisher, Madison Stevens, Chandler Cusick, Courtney Jones, Jordis Riley, and Keepes again). Andrews would hit and get thrown out at second. Wayne city would score two runs top of the second before the Rockets could get three outs. With Two strike outs and a third out by Fisher catching a foul ball behind the plate, the Rockets would again be at bat. Cusick would hit a line drive up the third base line and go on to score. Courtney Jones would be walked and score. Riley hit an infield ball to the short stop but be thrown out at first. Keepes would have a solid hit but also thrown out at first also. Walker would hit a double and score. Jones would hit to left field and score. Andrews hit to right center and also scored. Fisher would have a nice hit but be left on base after Stevens would be thrown out at first after a nice hit up the middle. (14-3) Andrews fielders would back her up top of the third. Stevens to Jones for the first out, followed by a strike out, then Keepes to Jones for the third out. Rockets went runless in the third but Breslin Ligon would hit to the second basemen but was unfortunately thrown out at first. Hazel Earnest would get to first on a drop third strike after battling at the plate getting pieces of the ball. Ruby Newkirk would also battle at the plate taking nice cuts and foul tipping several before striking out. Elizabeth Hefner would be walked but left on base as Walker hit a pop fly to the short stop for the third out. Andrews would walk the first batter in the fourth on a full count but follow up with 2 Ks. The walked runner would try to steal home on a wild pitch but great plate coverage from Fisher and Andrews would deny the runner and the Rockets would clench the third out. Nora Jones would start at the plate in the fourth and go on to score the 15th and eventual game ending run after being hit by the pitcher. (15-3) Top of the 5th the Rockets had to hold Wayne City to 2 or less runs to run rule them and they did just that. The first two batters would reach base and score but a follow through from Andrews to Fisher would be the first out. Andrews would then deny any more runs and clench the game with two solid strike outs. She’d end this game with 10 total strike outs. The girls continue to improve every game at the plate and in the field. The last regular season game will be home on Thursday September 19th at 430. Regional play will begin the following week! Go Lady Rockets!
