Josephine A. “JoAnn” Kieffer, 85

Josephine A. “JoAnn” Kieffer, 85, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away December 29, 2024, at Oakview Nursing and Rehabilitation surrounded by her loving family.

Services will be held Friday, January 3, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mt. Carmel. A burial will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Mt. Carmel.

Visitation will be Thursday, January 2, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Short-Cunningham Funeral Home in Mt. Carmel. A Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on January 2, 2025, at Short-Cunningham Funeral Home. 

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The funeral home will have envelopes available at all the services.

JoAnn was born to the late Oscar and Irene (Dunkel) Peterson April 11, 1939, in Mt. Carmel. JoAnn married Thomas L. Kieffer on August 22, 1959, at St. Mary’s Church and they enjoyed 63 years of marriage before his passing on January 9, 2023. To this union, four beautiful children were born: Anthony (Gloria) Kieffer of Mt. Carmel, Jeff (Goldie) Kieffer of Allendale, Illinois, Paul (Misty) Kieffer of Mt. Carmel, and Joseph (Christy) Kieffer of Browns.

JoAnn was a lifetime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She was the Director of Senior Citizens for 30 years, starting in 1973. JoAnn received the 2003 Governor’s Award for unique achievement in Excellence of Community Service. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella and the Homespun Quilters Club. JoAnn enjoyed sewing, cooking, baking and doing crafts. 

Left to cherish JoAnn’s memory are siblings; Nick (Dee) Peters, Linda (Jack) Sutton, Jim (Bill Moretini) Peters, and Annette (Brad) Weems; grandchildren Christopher (Erin) Kieffer, Darron (Kim) Kieffer, Patrick Kieffer, Amanda Thombleson, Tabatha Lang, Nick (Sara) Kieffer, Patty (Hank) Windle, and Kyle (Taylor) Kieffer; and 9 great-grandchildren.

JoAnn is preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant brother Don, brother Fred Peters, Carol and Leon Merriel, Ann Kight-Miller 3 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild.
