Doris Mae Saltsgaver, 87

Doris Mae Saltsgaver, 87, passed away October 22nd at St. Vincent hospital in Evansville, In. after a long struggle with dementia. Born May 1st, 1935, she was the 4th of 12 children born to Harry and Dorothy (Heath) Winters in Lawrenceville, IL. At only 4 foot 8 inches tall (although she always claimed 4 foot 10), Doris’ lack of height was way overcompensated by her big heart and natural artistic abilities. After high school Doris worked for the International Shoe factory in Olney and got her first tastes of independence. Before long she met John Saltsgaver and they were married on April 24th, 1954. John and Doris had 4 children and made their home in Allendale, IL. Times were tough in the early days but Doris was able to master making the most of what she had. Some of her fondest memories were of life in the tiny farm house in the country. As the years went by Doris was able excel in many hobbies such as bowling, doll making, quilting (she was very proud that hers were all hand stitched), painting, and crafting. She and John also enjoyed collecting and restoring antique furniture & glassware. She was an excellent cook and was well known for her noodles and pies. In later years she and John enjoyed camping, fishing, and spending time at their cabin on the Wabash River. They were avid fans who followed the Wabash Valley College basketball team.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, son Steve, husband John, 5 brothers, and 3 sisters. Surviving and missing her dearly are Sons Mike (Sonya), David (Lynn), daughter Shelby (Mark) Johnson, daughter in-law Teresa (David) Conrad, 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, sisters Pauline (Dewey) Eagleson, Della Ditch, and Jane Mason.
