Nellie Jane Brown, 89

Nellie Jane Brown, 89, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 15, 2021. She was born in Owensville, Indiana, the daughter of Millard and Augusta (Garrett) Larkins.

Jane loved and admired her parents dearly and shared many stories about her parent’s hard work and love of their farm in Indiana. She loved to tell her sons and their families stories of the challenging and sometimes very funny adventures that she and her sisters and brothers had growing up in Indiana and Illinois. Jane was cheerful, friendly, kind, and fun loving. She could make people smile and laugh within minutes of meeting them and her friends often referred to her as “Downtown Jane Brown”, as she was always a sharp dresser and was always ready to have some fun. Jane loved to listen to music, and she always had the radio playing the top 40 hits. She always knew who wrote and sang all the songs and to whom the singer was married. Jane loved to draw and paint, she crocheted afghans for all her children and grandchildren, and she could sew everything from clothing to curtains and purses made from blue jeans. Jane generously gave her art as gifts which are still treasured. Jane also took great pride in cooking huge, delicious holiday meals for her family. Jane worked her whole career as an accountant and as most of her of her friends were retiring, she began a second career as a caretaker. Jane loved her clients and took care of each of them as though they were her own parents. Jane was a member of the First Baptist Church, and she will be missed by her family and friends.

Jane will be lovingly remembered by her two sons, Mike Litherland and his wife, Diana, Jan Litherland and his girlfriend, Kathy; four grandchildren, Nic, Brittany, Bailey, and Andrew; five great grandchildren, Kamdyn, Kyler, Ella, Emersyn, and Oliver; step granddaughter, Nancy; her sister, Virginia Walls and her brother, Jessie Larkins. She will also be remembered by many loved nieces and nephews.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Kimberly Brown; two of her sisters and five of her brothers.

In keeping with Jane’s wishes, cremation will take place and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
