Helen L. Shoaff, 93, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2020, at Hollybrook surrounded by her loving family.
She was born January 28, 1927, the daughter of Leo and Mary (Sandwell) Peter. Helen graduated from Mt. Carmel High School. On June 15, 1948, she married Ollie Shoaff in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Ollie preceded her in death in October 2001 after 53 years of marriage. Helen was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Helen and Ollie owned and operated the Sani Cream Drive In for many years. She worked at the American Savings and Loan, and helped Ollie at the golf course, when he was the golf pro in Mt. Carmel. In her spare time, Helen enjoyed playing bridge with “the girls,” going out to eat, working in her yard with her flowers, mowing her yard until she was 90, and decorating her house and yard for the holidays.
Left to cherish Helen’s memory are her children Richard “Dick” Shoaff of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, Ann Winter and her husband Bob of Allendale, Illinois, and John Shoaff and his wife Kelly of Spring, Texas; grandchildren Eric and wife Amity Winter of Evansville, Indiana, and Emily Shoaff of Spring, Texas; greatgrandchild Layla Noelle Winter; Step grandchildren Rachel Winter of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, and Gwen (Winter) Petty and husband Kevin of Florence, South Carolina; step greatgrandchild Madolyn Petty; sister-in-law Helen Peters; and several nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Ed Peters.
A visitation will be held for friends and family Sunday, August 2, 2020, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Short Funeral Home, 527 N. Mulberry Street, Mt. Carmel, Illinois.
Rosary will be held Monday, August 3, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 125 W. 5th Street, Mt. Carmel, Illinois, with a Funeral Mass immediately following. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
