County Commissioners Approve Fencing In WEMA Property

Wabash County Commissioners have voted to spend $11,000 with an Evansville company to construct a fence around the WEMA property on Market Street. At their most recent meeting, commissioners Tim Hocking and Scott West approved the estimate from Mr. Fence to put up a four foot high chain link fence along 150 feet of the back property line, 125 feet along the alley, and 75 feet along the angled portion of the property. Since the cost of the project was less than $30,000, commissioners weren’t required to seek formal bids on the fence which will be paid out of ARPA funds the county currently has.

Guest Speaker To Focus On Local Banking History

Attorney Mike Witters is a collector of all things banking and has accumulated bank notes printed by local banking institutions prior to such notes being taken out of circulation by the federal government during the 1930s.  Mike will be speaking at the Wabash County Museum on Sunday August 27th at 2:15 p.m. located at 320 North Market Street in Mt. Carmel, Illinois.  The speaker will be accompanying the exhibit  “Banking in Changing Times” which is now on display.  The exhibit traces banking in Wabash County beginning in the 1800s.  Did you know that in the 1880s a bank employee took the cash from the safe and left the county?  Did you know that the first bank in Mt. Carmel was private and was torn down to make way for a gas station?  Did you know that at one time there was a bank in Bellmont and one in Lancaster?  Mike will display one of the rarest of bank notes from the Bank of Lancaster.  The event is free to everyone.
