Guest Speaker To Focus On Local Banking History

Attorney Mike Witters is a collector of all things banking and has accumulated bank notes printed by local banking institutions prior to such notes being taken out of circulation by the federal government during the 1930s.  Mike will be speaking at the Wabash County Museum on Sunday August 27th at 2:15 p.m. located at 320 North Market Street in Mt. Carmel, Illinois.  The speaker will be accompanying the exhibit  “Banking in Changing Times” which is now on display.  The exhibit traces banking in Wabash County beginning in the 1800s.  Did you know that in the 1880s a bank employee took the cash from the safe and left the county?  Did you know that the first bank in Mt. Carmel was private and was torn down to make way for a gas station?  Did you know that at one time there was a bank in Bellmont and one in Lancaster?  Mike will display one of the rarest of bank notes from the Bank of Lancaster.  The event is free to everyone.
