On 9/6/2022, Mt. Carmel Police arrested David E. Dicus, age 62, of Olney, Illinois, for Driving on a Revoked Driver’s License and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Dicus was stopped for a traffic violation when the officer learned of the revoked license. The officer requested the assistance of Ofc. Hopper and K-9 Eleven. Once Ofc. Hopper arrived, a free air narcotics sniff to the exterior of the vehicle was conducted, resulting in Eleven alerting to the presence of narcotics. A subsequent search led to the discovery of a glass smoking device with residue, cut straws with white residue, and a scale. These items are commonly utilized in the use of methamphetamine. Dicus was charged and released on a Notice to Appear.
On 9/06/2022, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Sabra B. Garrett, age 30, of Mt. Carmel, on a Wabash County Warrant for Delivery of Methamphetamine. Garrett’s case stems from the ongoing investigation into the illegal sales of narcotics within the City of Mt. Carmel. Garrett was transported to the Wabash County Jail where she was served her warrant and held pending the posting of $2500 cash bond.
On 8/29/2022, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Brockton R. Darnell, age 38, of Murphysboro, Illinois, on a Jackson County Warrant for Burglary. Darnell was taken into custody at a residence in the 400 block of West 2nd Street and transported to the Wabash County Jail where he was held pending extradition back to Jackson County.
On 8/28/2022, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Larry P. Clites, age 43, of Carbondale, Illinois, for Aggravated Fleeing & Attempting to Elude a Police Officer, Resisting a Police Officer, Reckless Driving, and Driving While License Revoked following an incident in the area of 3rd & Division Street. An officer in the area observed a black Toyota drive into the construction area at this intersection, disregarding the road closed signs and barricades, so the officer attempted a traffic stop. The driver refused to stop and accelerated away from the officer, nearly collided with a tree, jumped a curb going airborne, before ramping a pile of gravel at the construction site landing on another pile of rock that disabled the vehicle. The driver fled on foot and slipped on the pavement causing him to strike his head on a nearby piece of equipment. The driver was found to by Larry Clites who was taken into custody after being checked by EMS. The arresting officer found that Clites believed the vehicle may have been reported stolen by the owner; however, it had not. Clites was transported to the Wabash County Jail where he was charged and held pending bond.
Lightning has again hit the Wabash County Courthouse causing considerable damage. Sheriff Derek Morgan told commissioners Tuesday that the damage from Monday’s storm wasn’t as extreme as the last hit, but several issues have occurred…
The Mt. Carmel Fire Department was dispatched to the courthouse after the lightning strike caused the alarms to malfunction indicating a fire when there wasn’t one.
A woman from Odon, Illinois was the high bidder for the 2009 Chevrolet Malibu the Mt. Carmel City Council was selling. The car was previously used by the airport and the $6,000 bid must be approved by the GSA before it’s officially sold. Bids were opened at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.
Wabash County is back in the COVID high transmission level. Health Department administrator Judy Wissel told the county board Tuesday that there were 240 positive COVID cases last month in Wabash County causing the move back to high transmission. The 240 figure doesn’t include at home tests. COVID testing continues each weekday from 11 to 3 at the health department. Weekend testing at the health department has been suspended.
Wissel said the health department is now offering the COVID Bivalent booster vaccines starting today. She said the health department has only received 100 doses at this point in time, so you need to call to make an appointment. Wissel said she expects to be plenty of vaccine inventory as it gradually arrives.
Posey County – Wednesday morning, September 7, Mt. Vernon Police and Indiana State Police initiated a criminal investigation after a threatening text message was sent to a Mt. Vernon Senior High School student. The message was sent through an app that disguises the true sender. The message alleged a shooting was going to occur the following day at Mt. Vernon Senior High School. During the investigation, officers were able to identify the sender as a 15-year-old male from Mesa, AZ. The teen had previously attended Mt. Vernon Senior High School and knew the student the message was sent to. Indiana State Police and Mt. Vernon Police collaborated with Mesa Police and were able to locate the teen. During the investigation, it was revealed the teen made the alleged threat using the text app. The 15-year-old was arrested for Interfering with an Educational Institution, a Level 6 Felony and for Threatening and Intimidating, a Class 1 Misdemeanor. The juvenile is currently in custody in a juvenile detention center in Phoenix, AZ.
All threats toward students, staff, and schools are taken seriously and will be thoroughly investigated. It is also important to remind students and parents to immediately report threats to police or school administrators.

Orange County-On September 6, 2022, Detectives with the Indiana State Police-Jasper Post began conducting a death investigation after an adult male was found deceased in Paoli, Indiana.
At approximately 7:30 am yesterday, the Paoli Police Department responded to a call of an unresponsive male near the address of 889 North Gospel Street Paoli, IN. Officers responded and located the man laying along the north side of the building. The Indiana State Police were asked to lead the investigation. The Paoli Police Department, Orange County Sheriff’s Department, Orange County EMS and the Paoli Fire Department assisted at the scene.
The male was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Orange County Coroner’s Office.
An autopsy is scheduled for today to determine the cause of death. The deceased has been identified as, Joshua Wade, 38, of Paoli. His family has been notified.
Indiana State Police Detectives are being assisted in the ongoing investigation by the Paoli Police Department and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
