On 8/28/2022, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Larry P. Clites, age 43, of Carbondale, Illinois, for Aggravated Fleeing & Attempting to Elude a Police Officer, Resisting a Police Officer, Reckless Driving, and Driving While License Revoked following an incident in the area of 3rd & Division Street. An officer in the area observed a black Toyota drive into the construction area at this intersection, disregarding the road closed signs and barricades, so the officer attempted a traffic stop. The driver refused to stop and accelerated away from the officer, nearly collided with a tree, jumped a curb going airborne, before ramping a pile of gravel at the construction site landing on another pile of rock that disabled the vehicle. The driver fled on foot and slipped on the pavement causing him to strike his head on a nearby piece of equipment. The driver was found to by Larry Clites who was taken into custody after being checked by EMS. The arresting officer found that Clites believed the vehicle may have been reported stolen by the owner; however, it had not. Clites was transported to the Wabash County Jail where he was charged and held pending bond.
