Wabash General Hospital Receives the 2021 Women’s Choice Award® as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Emergency Care

Wabash General Hospital has been named one of America’s Best Hospitals for Emergency Care by the Women’s Choice Award®, America’s trusted referral source for the best in healthcare.  The award signifies that Wabash General Hospital is in the top 5% of 4,542 U.S. hospitals offering emergency care services.

Eldo Deisher stated, “As Vice President of Emergency Services, I too am very proud to announce The Best Hospital Women’s Choice Award of Emergency Care 2021 presented to Wabash General Emergency Room Department. Here at Wabash General Hospital the staff are very focused on patients and their families. We are very pleased in being recognized as one of the top 5% of emergency rooms. We will continue to grow in making sure that all patients are taken care of with compassionate and high quality nursing. That’s why we say it’s “People you know, taking care of people you love”. Again I want to think all the emergency room staff for all the diligence during these times. We do very much appreciate being chosen as one of the recipient of the award for 2021.”

The methodology for America’s Best Hospitals for Emergency Care award is unique in that it combines Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey results with primary research about women’s healthcare preferences. The award recognizes excellence in emergency care based on several process of care measures focused on time patients spent in the emergency department, including:

●       Total Time Spent in the Emergency Department

●       Time from Admission to a Room

●       Percent of Emergency Patients Who Left Without Being Seen

Criteria for selecting Wabash General Hospital as one of America’s Best also included the percentage of patients who came to the emergency department with stroke symptoms who received brain scan results within 45 minutes of arrival.  Also included this year were hospitals that performed well in responding to patients showing symptoms of severe sepsis, a very dangerous condition.  The awarded hospitals represent those with emergency departments with average measure times in the highest 25th to 50th percentile in the country.  Hospitals received additional credit if they have an accredited trauma center.

The award is especially significant given that long waits and high crowding can negatively impact patient outcomes, including patients leaving without receiving medical treatment, longer overall length of hospital stays and an increase in mortality rates.

“On behalf of the entire Wabash General Emergency Department staff, we are so humbled and grateful to receive this prestigious award.  On a daily basis, without any pursuit of recognition, the staff selflessly displays their dedication to providing excellent and compassionate care to our community and surrounding communities.  Therefore, it is truly an honor that the care they provide is being acknowledged and awarded in this way. This recognition is a testament to our high standards for providing quality care,” stated Krista Peach, Director of WGH’s Emergency Department.

“We have found that recommendations are an important consideration used by women in selecting a hospital for themselves and their family. By helping women know which hospitals in their area provide the best critical care, we are able to help them make better decisions, especially when it comes to emergency situations,” says Delia Passi, CEO and Founder of the Women’s Choice Award. “Women make over 80% of healthcare decisions and have demanding lifestyles and we help simplify her life by making it easy for her to find the best care in those stressful emergency situations.”

Wabash General Hospital is one of 477 award recipients representing the hospitals that have met the highest standards for emergency care in the U.S. by the Women’s Choice Award.

Karissa Turner, President and CEO of WGH, stated “I’m delighted to see the hard work of our Emergency Department team pay off.  These individuals have been serving on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic along with being on the front lines of ensuring our community has the best quality emergency care.  This acknowledgement of their hard work and dedication to the community could not come at a better time given the challenging environment and year they just experienced.  The emergency department and quality department along with Integritas Emergency services and has dedicated countless hours to reviewing patient outcomes, metrics, and patient experience scores to continually improve the treatment and care rendered to our customers.  Their “all hands on deck” approach to ensuring strong collaboration between the nursing staff, ancillary staff and physicians has shown significant improvement in our processes and outcomes. I am proud of their accomplishments and I’m fortunate to have these outstanding individuals to turn to if in need of emergency services.”
