Wayne County Crash Seriously Injures Salem Man

ISP TRAFFIC CRASH ALERT

The Following Preliminary Information is Being Released by Illinois State Police

WHAT:                      Two Vehicle Injury Traffic Crash

WHERE:                   Illinois Route 15 approximately 1/2 mile West of 2700 E, Wayne County

WHEN:                      May 04, 2020 at 6:20 p.m.

VEHICLES:              Unit 1- 2015 White Ford Truck

                                    Unit 2- 1986 Red Mack Truck-Tractor Semi-Trailer combination

DRIVERS:                Unit 1- Thomas Leigh, 55 year old male from West Salem, IL – transported by ambulance to an area hospital with life threatening injuries

                                    Unit 2- Andrew Bangert, 33 year old male from Clay City, IL – Uninjured

PASSENGERS:        Unit 2- Levi Henson, 22 year old male from Flora, IL - Uninjured

PRELIMINARY:       A preliminary investigation indicates the following occurred:  Unit 1 was traveling East on Illinois Route 15 near 2700 East in Wayne County. Unit 2 was traveling West at the same location. For unknown reasons, the driver of Unit 1 crossed the center line and struck the front end of Unit 2. Unit 1 driver then lost control and left the roadway and traveled down a steep embankment. Unit 1 driver was transported by ambulance to an area hospital and later airlifted to a regional hospital with life threatening injuries.  The roadway was closed for approximately 30 minutes during the crash investigation.
