The Mt. Carmel City Council appears poised to pass an ordinance allowing the legal use of golf carts and UTV’s on city streets. At Monday night’s meeting, the council set the parameters they’d like to see crafted into an ordinance they hope to hear the first reading of at their next meeting September 9th.
During an appearance on yesterday’s WSJD Morning Show, Mayor Joe Judge explained the timeline for the ordinance….
While commissioners chose to legalize golf carts and UTV’s or side-by-sides, they did not include ATV’s or four-wheelers and dirt bike type motorcycles into the new ordinance.
A $50 a year permit would be required for the golf carts and ATV’s which would have to be made street legal and have proof of insurance. Money generated from the permits would go to the police department which will handle inspecting the golf carts and UTV’s.
They would not be allowed to be driven on state highways which include a large part of Walnut, 3rd, 9th, and Cherry Streets. Crossing those state routes would only be permitted on certain designated points and drivers must be at least 16 years old and have a valid driver’s license. Their use would be prohibited between midnight and 6am.
