City Council Considers Brush/Grass Pickup Options

The Mt. Carmel City Council has tabled a decision on how much to increase trash pickup fees. City leaders claim an increase is necessary to help offset Republic Services’ new contract which calls for higher residential rates.

Currently, residential customers are being charged $13 a month for trash pickup which also includes brush and grass pickup. The new contract from Republic is for $12.25 a month leaving the city no wiggle room to pay for the brush and grass pickup which runs about $150,000 a year for the city.

Finance Commissioner Eric Ikemire said without an increase, the city’s money for the brush and grass pickup would be gone in 8 to 9 months.

Last night, City Clerk Rudy Witsman said the council faces a decision…

The council instructed Witsman to gather figures on the cost of the grass and brush pickup program and a decision on the fees is expected at the next meeting in two weeks.
