VANDERBURGH COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation announces the State Road 62 bridge repair project in downtown Evansville is set to resume.
Beginning on or around Wednesday, March 6, crews with Ragle, Inc. will close the westbound passing lane of S.R. 62 on the bridge spanning Pigeon Creek, for prep work, including temporary pavement markings for a crossover. Beginning on March 11, traffic will be routed into the eastbound lanes while crews work to replace bearing pads and make repairs to the substructure of the bridge as well as building a new approach on the east end. The work will wrap up with a pavement overlay on the westbound deck.
Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in either direction at all times. The project is expected to be complete by the end of June, depending upon weather conditions. A 10-foot width restriction will be in place for the duration of the project.
This project comes after INDOT identified an issue with the bridge’s bearing pads in 2016 and is a continuation of work from the 2018 construction season. Bearing pads are pieces of rubber that act as shock absorbers between the concrete components. In 2016, the pads “walked out,” or slid out of place causing the bridge to shift. Temporary repairs were made at that time. This project will permanently repair the structure.
INDOT urges drivers to slow down and stay alert near crews.
