Lady Aces Fall In Season Opener Against Carmi

The Lady Aces Volleyball team had their season opener Monday night against a very experienced Carmi team.

The Varsity match the Aces fell in two sets 11-25, 7-25. Carmi came out hard and fast, with two very strong returning outside attackers, and a strong defense. They were a tough matchup boasting a super sectional appearance last season.

The Aces will build on the loss, and see ways they can get better. There was some nerves, and unforced errors, we will see improvement on tonight.

Highlights from the match were Jayla Johnson 1 digs, 1 kill, Tenley Davis 3 digs, Lyla Keepes, 2 kills, 1 dig, Kyleigh Smith 1 dig, Gabby Schneider 1 dig, 3 assists.

The JV team lost in 2 sets, 20-25, 21-25. The JV team played well, we did have some break downs in serve receive, and serving errors. Without those couple of breakdowns, we had a high chance of winning against a strong Carmi JV.  I was very happy with the defense and attacking confidence. Some highlights, Kinley Harris 8 assists, Leah Lewis 6 kills, 3 digs, Avery Coston 4 aces 1 kill, Gracee Haggard 3 aces, 2 digs, 4 kills, Cate Pyatt 1 kill, 1 block, Journey Loudermilk 4 kills, Mercedes Dillard 2 digs, 1 assist, Quincy Keepes 7 assists, Addison Mobley 1 kill.

The Freshman team lost in 2 sets. They played with less errors the first set, and made it close, but had less consistency the second.  20-25, 8-25.

Next up the Lady Aces will face off against another tough opponent Edwards County on Thursday the 28th at Edwards County. It’s always electric playing at EC with their big fan base. Come support the Aces take on the Lions tonight!

Soccer Aces Drop Season Opener

From Coach Ed Berberich:

The soccer Aces hosted the Princeton Tigers in their season opener Wednesday night, falling behind early and losing 8-1. The Tigers scored 7 goals in the 1st half. They would add a goal in the 2nd but the Aces played them to a draw in the half when Mataio Militoni scored on an assist from Wyatt Howder on a ball crossed into the box from Santiago Guanipa.

This was one game where I feel the score doesn't tell the whole story. That's not meant to take anything away Princeton, they're a strong team & really controlled the game throughout. What was encouraging for us though, were the glimpses of positive things we saw during the game. We weren't able to consistently do what we wanted but we showed flashes. To do that while shorthanded & while we're still working in some new players was encouraging. The guys did a great job of battling throughout the game, regardless of the score & the fact that we only had 2 subs available to us tonight. I'm proud of the whole team for the way they played tonight but do want to shout out Wyatt Rooney who volunteered to fill in at goal for Michael Read, who missed the game due to illness, but who himself had also volunteered to fill in for normal starting goalkeeper Ty Hipsher. Ty was able to play out in the field for us but an injury to his thumb has pushed him out of goal & forced us to look elsewhere at that key position. Michael & Wyatt both volunteered to do it even though neither of them have played goalie before. It means a lot to any team to have guys willing to step up & do something that they haven't done before, & maybe even don't really want to do, especially an inexperienced team like we are. If we continue to be selfless in that way, & play hard out there no matter the sutuation, then I'm going to be proud of these guys regardless of what happens.

The Aces will next be at home again on Thursday September 4th against another strong team in Richland County.

Meet The Warriors Night Set For September 10th

Wabash Valley College invites the community to come out and celebrate Meet the Warriors Night on Tuesday, September 10, at the Spencer Sports Center. The event kicks off at 5:30 PM and leads into an exciting volleyball matchup against Lincoln Trail College at 6:30 PM.

This annual tradition brings together students, athletes, families, and community members for an evening of food, fun, and school spirit. Outside the gym, guests can enjoy hot dogs and pork burgers, while getting an up-close look at the Bass Fishing Team’s wrapped boats—a favorite feature of the night.

Rachel Refenes, WVC Volleyball Coach and Student Life Coordinator, shared her enthusiasm:

“This event has been a lot of fun and a big success. It happens in September and brings attention to the Bass Team and Archery we have at Wabash. Todd’s guys do a great job meeting people and talking about their boats and team. I look forward to this event each year and love hearing volleyball fans and parents talk about the boats and food.”

Todd Gill, Bass Fishing Team Coach and WVC instructor, added:

“The WVC Bass Team loves being a part of Meet the Warriors Night. It’s a great evening for the community to come out and meet many of the student athletes for the fall season and to see some of our wrapped boats that we compete out of. Most important to us is helping to get a big crowd out in support of our volleyball team. All of the sports teams expect and are striving for excellence. Having support from the community and other sports teams on campus is something that can level-up the student experience at Wabash Valley College.”

Samantha Newkirk, Executive Director of the WVC Foundation, also expressed support:

“The Foundation is glad to come alongside an already successful event.”

Meet the Warriors Night is open to the public and promises a great time for all ages. Come hungry, bring your school spirit, and help cheer on the Warriors!
