Memorial Pitch and Catch Saturday, Oct. 26 Honors 1954 World Series Game Four Winner Don Liddle

A game of pitch and catch to celebrate the major league baseball career and 70th anniversary of Mt. Carmel, IL native Don Liddle will be held Saturday, October 26, 11 a.m., This event will be held at Don Liddle Ball Park on W. 4th St. in Mt. Carmel, IL.

Liddle while pitching for the New York Giants, won game four of the 1954 World Series, He was also on the mound pitching to Cleveland Indians slugger Vic Wertz when Willie Mays made “The Catch” in deep center field of the New York's Polo Grounds. Mays' “Catch” killed an Indians rally and the Giants would win Game One 5-2. The Giants would sweep the Indians in four straight with southpaw curve baller Don Liddle winning 4.

Liddle's six year journey in the Milwaukee Braves organization began at Bosse Field in Evansville, IN with the Evansville Braves of the III League.

Event organizer Wes Schilt said “We have to remember people like Don Liddle, because he represents small dreams made big. If we don't remember, it slowly fades away.”

Schilt said it is also bigger than Liddle's dream. It is bigger than a Mt. Carmel, IL thing, “For one day, we all have the opportunity to turn a baseball field named in his honor into our own 'Field of Dreams.' A place to have a catch. A place for fathers and mothers, sons and daughters. A place to experience joy and remember.

For more information, contact Wes Schilt at (618)-302-7701.

Lady Aces Take Down Olney; Sets Up LIC Title Showdown Against Newton

The Lady Aces traveled to Olney on Thursday night for another conference matchup.  The varsity team started out  back and forth with Olney. They had a hard time gaining a lead with some questionable calls from the referee, causing frustration. The Aces were able to gain momentum at the end, and inched ahead winning the first set 25-18. The second set the team scored hard and fast getting up 8-2 forcing Olney to call a time out. The girls kept the momentum going with great defense and minimal errors. Olney called their second time out at 21-6. The Aces sealed the deal with a final score of 25-8.

Stats Madi Stevens 6 digs, 1 block kill, 7 kills, 20 digs, 12 kills, Jayla Johnson 10 digs, 3 kills, Maycee Randall, 1 ace, 4 digs, 2 block kills, 5 kills, Kyleigh Smith 1 dig, 3 kills, Lyla Keepes, 1 ace, 9 digs, 6 kills,  Tenley Davis 3 aces, 9 digs, 1 assist, Mattie Armstrong 3 digs, 21 assists.

The JV team started off good but quickly fell into an error rut they had a hard time climbing out of. They had a total of 16 attacking errors and 7 serving errors. With that we just couldn’t find the way to inch ahead. The girls had some great hustle at times, but Olney was able to keep the momentum dropping the aces in two sets 19-25, 19-25.

Stats for the night Kinley Harris 2 aces, 8 digs, 11 assist, Leah Lewis 1 ace, 12 digs, 5 kills, Gracee Haggard 3 digs, 3 kills, Avery Coston 1 ace, 2 digs, 2 kills, 1 block kill. , Zoie Randall 2 dig, 4 kills, Alivia Peach 16 digs, Mylee Farmer, 3 digs, Mercedes Dillard 3 digs, 1 assist,  Kate Andrews 1 digs, Gabby Schneider 1 dig.

The Frosh Lady Aces team won the first set 25-17. They got out to a big lead, but let Olney back in to make it closer at the end.

The second set Olney came out and jumped ahead quickly. Mt. Carmel fought their way back, but fell short 18-25.

The Lady Aces will have the weekend off and play Mt. Vernon Away on Monday with Frosh starting at 5.

The big matchup next week will against Newton on Tuesday October 8th,  the conference crown.

Lady Aces Win Nailbiter At Casey

The Mt. Carmel Lady Aces Volleyball team traveled to Casey Westfield Thursday night for more conference play.

The Varsity match was very close, point for point play. Casey ran a quick offense and played good defense, but it wasn’t enough to beat the Aces. Madison Stevens had a big night with another double, double, 23 digs and 11 kills. Maycee Randall was a dominating force with her net play. Sarah McCorkle was doing a great job connecting with her attackers on many quick attacks.  The Aces won the first set 28-26, but the second set with only 4 left to score our senior setter Sarah McCorkle went down with a possible ankle injury.  This had the team rattled and Casey came back to win the set 26-28.

The girls banded together with extreme focus trying to grunt out the last set. Mattie Armstrong stepped in to set. The team started with strong momentum, and took the set in convincing style 25-10 to win the match.

Sarah McCorkle, 3 digs, 2 kills, 16 assists, Madi Stevens 23 digs, 11 kills, Maycee Randall, 4 aces, 9 digs. 5 block kills, 9 kills, Kyleigh Smith 4 digs, 7 kills,  Lyla Keepes, 1 ace. 11 digs, 3 kills,  Tenley Davis 13 digs, 2 assists, Mattie Armstrong 1 ace, 7 digs, 13 assists.

The JV match was back and forth errors on both side of the net.  The Aces took the first set 25-23, but fell the second 19-25.

They won the third set quickly by cleaning up their play and talking more.

Mattie Armstrong 3 digs, 6 assists, 5 kills, Kinley Harris 3 aces, 5 digs, 1 kill, 5 assist, Leah Lewis 9 digs, Gracee Haggard 2 digs, Avery Coston 1 dig, 2 block kills, 4 kill, Zoie Randall 1 kill, Alivia Peach 3 aces, 14 digs, Mylee 9 digs, Mercedes Dillard 8 digs, 1 kill, Journey Loudermilk 2 digs, 2 kills, Kate Andrews 1 dig.

The Lady Aces will travel to Fairfield on Monday night for some alway tough competition against the Lady Mules.  Frosh play will start at 5:00, followed by JV and Varsity.
