Tyra Buss Elected To IBCA Hall Of Fame

The 2025 Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) Hall of Fame class has been announced and Mt. Carmel all-time great Tyra Buss is part of the Class.

The Hall of Fame class will be honored at the IBCA banquet on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at CEFCU Arena on the campus of Illinois State University in Normal.

SENIOR YEAR (2017-18)
Started in all 37 games … earned her third-straight All-Big Ten First Team selection, the third player in school history and first since Karna Abram (1985-87) … repeated as a WBCA All-American honorable mention … averaged 20.6 points on her way to breaking the school record in points scored (2,364) along with six other career categories including steals (293), assists (574), free throws made (633), 3-pointers attempted (646), free throws attempted (853) and points per game (17.5) … also finished her career ranked second in 3-pointers and third in field goals made while coming in fourth in the Big Ten in free throws made and ninth in scoring …became the first player to score 700 points in a single season (763) and the first player to record three-straight 600 point seasons … named to Wade Watch List and Naismith Citizens Preseason Trophy Watch List … a top 10 finalist for the Senior CLASS Award … led the nation in minutes played (1,479), minutes played per game (40.0) and played 22 games with 40 minutes or more … had four 30-point scoring performances, scored 16 games with 20 points or more and posted 36 of 37 games in double figures … … led Indiana in scoring in 24 games ... knocked down 10 or more field goals in eight games as she shot 42.4 percent … dished out multiple assists in 33 games … from the floor on the year had two double-doubles … led the team in points per game, assists per game and steals per game … started off the season with a double-double of 28 points, 11 rebounds against Arkansas State … made the game winning layup with three seconds left over Western Kentucky … added 10 assists and 17 points against Chattanooga … dropped 27 points as she broke the school record for points scored at Penn State including a 10-for-12 performance from the line … drained five 3-pointers, going 4-for-4 in the first quarter from long range, to score 28 points in a win at Michigan State that sparked an eight-game win streak … scored 31 points in an overtime win over Northwestern and back-to-back 30 point games in a Senior Day win over Nebraska (37) and at Minnesota (36) … dished out a season-high eight assists against Michigan State in a four-overtime win where she scored 24 points and added two steals while playing all 60 minutes … named the Most Valuable Player of the postseason WNIT as she led Indiana in scoring in five of six games and averaged … picked up a season-high seven steals against Milwaukee … dropped 30 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals against UC Davis … added 22 points in the semifinals win over TCU … scored a team-high 16 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals in the WNIT Championship against Virginia Tech.

JUNIOR YEAR (2016-17)
Started in all 34 games … WBCA All-American honorable mention, the program’s first in 31 years … repeat All-Big Ten First Team selection for the first time since Jill Chapman in 2001-02 … was named to the Naismith Trophy Preseason Top 50 and added midseason to the Wade Trophy Watch List … led IU in scoring with 18.2 points per game as she recorded back-to-back 600 point seasons for the first time in school history by scoring 619 points … finished 34th in the nation in points scored … became the fastest player in school history to record 1,000 points and finished up her junior campaign eighth all-time in scoring (1,601) … has scored the most points of any player through her junior season, besting all-time leading scorer Denise Jackson who scored 1,505 points through her junior season … set a new school record for consecutive double-figure scoring games with 59 and scored in double figures in 32 of 34 games played … led IU with 18.2 points per game which also ranked 11th in the Big Ten … scored a career-high 38 points against North Carolina State, the fourth-best single game performance in school history … also scored 35 points against Florida which is the eighth-best single game performance and also set a new Big Ten and program record for made free throws in a game by going 19-for-20 from the line … led Indiana at the free throw line and seventh in the Big Ten, shooting 81.2 percent (155-for-199) … her 155 free throws made were second-most in the Big Ten and 18th overall in the country and her 199 attempts were 27th in the nation … finished the season ranked second all-time in made free throws (453) and fourth in free throw attempts (594) … scored 20 points or more in 13 contests … led Indiana in scoring in 20 games this season … also recorded a team-high 158 assists (4.6 per game) as she dished out multiple assists in every game and ranked eighth in the Big Ten in that category… set a new career-high with 10 assists in the win over Northern Kentucky which was part of two of her double-doubles this season … other double-double came at Illinois when she scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds … also led the team in steals and third in the Big Ten with 81 (2.4 per game), recording a swipe in 33 of 34 games … picked up multiple steals in 22 game and grabbed a new career-high eight in the win over UMass Lowell … finished tied for eighth in the Big Ten in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9) and was fifth in minutes played (1,206) … set a new career-high 11 field goals made on 26 points at Penn State in the conference opener … drained a new career-high five 3-pointers in the double-overtime win over Iowa … has played and started in all 97 games of her career … averaged 35.5 minutes per game.

SOPHOMORE YEAR (2015-16)
Earned First Team All-Big Ten honors in 2015-16, becoming the first IU player to earn first team distinction since 2006 (Cyndi Valentin) ... scored the third most points ever scored in a single year in program history with 620 points ... her 982 points in freshman and sophomore season combine for the most ever scored by an IU player in first two seasons played ... averaged 18.8 points (8th in B1G), 5.0 rebounds, 4.4 assists (7th) and 2.1 steals (T-3rd) per game while shooting 77.2 percent (13th) from the field and logging 37.7 minutes (7th) per game ... set an Indiana record for most free throws made in a single year with 203, good for the sixth most ever made in a single season in Big Ten history ... scored in double figures in every single game and ended the year with a double-digit scoring streak of 37 consecutive games dating back to her freshman year, the longest such streak for an IU player since 1998 (Quacy Barnes, 37) ... was the only player in the Big Ten to rank in the top 10 in the conference in points, assists and steals ... scored 23 points against Georgia to help Indiana to its first NCAA Tournament win since 1983 while adding seven rebounds, five assists and two steals ... tallied 22 points at Nebraska on Feb. 24 while shooting 7-of-14 from the floor with six boards, three steals and three assists ... shot 8-of-13 from the field on her way to 27 points in the win over Minnesota on Feb. 18 and just missed a triple double adding nine boards, seven assists and three steals ... scored 24 points while nailing 11-of-11 free throws with nine rebounds, five assists and two steals in victory over Wisconsin on Feb. 14 ... at Illinois on Feb. 10, finished with 21 points, five boards, four assist and two rebounds ... had a second straight double-double in Feb. 7 win over Nebraska with 17 points and 11 rebounds while adding seven steals and six assists ... notched her second double-double of the season in Iowa win with 18 points ant 10 boards with seven assists ... led IU with 24 points in the Rutgers victory on Jan. 27 ... led IU past No. 20 Northwestern in Evanston on Jan. 24 with 21 points, 10 boards, five assists, two blocks and two steals ... scored 24 points on 5-of-10 shooting 12-of-17 free throws with four assists and three steals in victory over No. 18 Michigan State on Jan. 13 ... finished with 19 points at No. 5 Ohio State ... in Indiana's first Big Ten win of the year over Michigan on Jan. 3, tallied 18 points ... hit 11-of-12 free throws on way to 23 points vs. West Virginia in Orlando ... finished with 28 points with seven rebounds, four assist and two steals while shooting 9-of-17 from the field ... connected on 15-of-17 free throws and finished with 21 points against Samford to go along with nine boards with five steals on Dec. 11 ... led IU over Georgia Tech in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge scoring 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting ... was 8-of-14 from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 from the line in win over Austin Peay at the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament ... scored a career-high 29 points at IPFW on Nov. 24, shooting 7-of-14 from the field and 14-of-18 from the line ... tallied 21 points in season opening win over Tennessee State in Preseason WNIT with eight assists and six steals.

FRESHMAN YEAR (2014-15)
Started in all 31 games … averaged 11.7 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.1 steals per game … she ranked sixth among freshmen nationally, first among freshmen in the Big Ten and seventh overall in the conference in steals … her 65 steals were the most by an IU player since 2010-11 … scored in double figures in 22 games … had three or more steals in 11 contests … twice earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors (Nov. 17, Nov. 24) … led all scorers with 18 points while shooting 8-of-14 from the field against Garder-Webb, adding seven steals, five assists, four rebounds and a steal … scored 22 points and eight steals while shooting 10-of-16 from the field with four rebounds and two assists vs. Valpo on Nov. 18 … against Morehead State on Nov. 21, scored 16 points with six boards, five assists and a steal … tallied 17 points, shooting 5-of-9 from the field with four rebounds, three steals and two assists … dished for seven assists vs. ETSU to go along with 13 points, four steals and for rebounds … against Indiana State on Nov. 30, scored 10 points with four steals, four assists and three rebounds … led IU with 24 points at Boston College while connecting on 4-of-7 3-point field goals and 8-of-10 free throws with four steals … scored 12 points with two boards, an assist and a steal in the win over IUPUI on Dec. 7 … had four steals in the win over IPFW with nine points, five rebounds and two assists … just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine boards in the win at Milwaukee to go along with two steals and two assists … in the win over No. 24 Michigan State, achieved her first career double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds to go along with two steals and two assists … finished with 11 points, eight rebounds, two assists and a steal at Purdue on Jan. 4 … scored 11 points with five assists and a steal while shooting 4-of-6 from the field vs. Wisconsin on Jan. 11 … led Indiana with six assists at Minnesota while scoring seven points with three rebounds on Jan. 18 … at Penn State on Jan. 22, scored 10 points with four assists while hitting 2-of-4 3-point field goals … led IU with 19 points against No. 7/6 Maryland with six assists and three steals while shooting 7-of-12 from the field … finished with 11 points, two assists and a steal against Purdue on Feb. 2 … against Northwestern on Feb. 5, scored a game-high 17 points with three assists, two rebounds, a block and a steal … nailed three 3-point field goals and scored 11 points with three assists, two steals and two rebounds at Ohio State on Feb. 8 … tallied 11 points with four assists and three steals while shooting 4-of-7 from the field vs. Illinois on Feb. 11 … at Maryland on Feb. 26, scored 10 points with three rebounds, two steals and two assists … led Indiana with 14 points at Rutgers on March 1 and added two rebounds, two assists and a steal … scored 12 points with eight assists and seven rebounds while shooting 5-of-10 from the field in IU’s win over Penn State to open the Big Ten Tournament on March 4 … led the team with 19 points to go along with five boards and four steals vs. Rutgers in the conference tourney on March 5.

Carmel High School for head coach Tim Willis ... named Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year, a Parade High School All-American and the National High School Coaches Association Girls' Basketball Player of the Year in 2014 ... earned AP and IBCA First Team All-State honors in all four seasons and twice was named Illinois Player of the Year (2013, 2014) by Champaign News Gazette ... during her four years, Mt. Carmel compiled an overall record of 112-16 (.875) while winning four IHSA regional titles ... holds Illinois girls basketball records in career scoring (4,897), career free throws made (1,185), highest career scoring average (38.0), career field goals made (1,644), single-season scoring (1,466) and single-season field goals (512) ... her career point total ranks as the third highest scoring total nationally ever by a high girls basketball player, ranks second nationally all-time in career free throws made, ranks third and fourth in single-season free throws made nationally, fourth in most single-season points and fifth in career scoring average and single-season scoring average (45.8) ... as a senior, averaged 45.8 points, 6.7 steals 5.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game while shooting 65 percent from inside the arc, 39 percent from 3-point range and 82 percent from the free throw line while leading MCHS to a 27-5 record ... she scored 60 or more points in a single game three times in 2013-14, including a career-high 66 points vs. Princeton on Dec, 28, 2013 ... was the state runner-up in the IHSA's state 3-point competition ... named a Wendy's High School Heisman Award winner for the state of Illinois ... as a junior in 2012-13, averaged 38.9 points, 6.1 steals, 3.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game while leading the Aces to a 32-1 record ... averaged 35.0 points, 5.0 steals and 3.0 rebounds per game as a sophomore in 2011-12 ... as a freshman, tallied 32.0 points, 4.3 steals, 3.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game ... also excelled in tennis, track and cross country ... held a 89-0 career regular season singles record in tennis, was twice named third team all-state singles player and honorable mention two times, named Southern Illinois Player of the Year in tennis all four years ... lettered four times in track and made state finals appearances in the 800m run, 300m low hurdles, 100m high hurdles, the 400m relay and the 1600m relay ... was a four year letterwinner in cross country ... played AAU for Indiana Elite Swish.
