Allendale School Board Notes

At the February 2022 Allendale School Board meeting held in the Library of Allendale School, the board:

1. Approved Allie Mae Photography as the school photographer for 2022-2023 school year.

2. Approved the purchase of two pumps for the HVAC system.

3. Approved a maternity leave for Alecia Winkles, Paraprofessional, beginning April 4, 2022 through the end of the school year.

4. Approved the Resignation of Emily Snyder effective February 9, 2022.

5. Approved the Resignation of Head Basketball Coach Bob Bowser.

6. Approved the Resignation of Cheerleading Coach Cindy Brogan.

Browning Appointed To Replace Henager On IECC Board

The Board of Trustees of Illinois Eastern Community College District No. 529 met Tuesday night, February 15th at Olney Central College, Olney, Illinois.  

Mr. Al Henager announced his retirement from the IECC Board of Trustees effective January 18, 2022.  The Board appointed Roger Browning to fill the seat vacated by Mr. Henager.    Mr. Browning will be seated at the March 15th meeting of the Board.  He will serve until the 2023 Election; at which time he may seek election to a two year term on the Board.

A retirement ratification was approved for Brenda Phegley, long time Professor at Wabash Valley College, to be effective May 13, 2022.

The 2021 IECC Fact Book, containing basic information about the community college district was adopted.  The book gathers information from various sources into one central document regarding students, enrollment history, degrees and certificates granted, financial aid received and distributed, and the district’s annual budgets and operation.

The Board accepted the Calendar Year 2021 Annual Report of the IECC 403(b) Plan.

Board approval was given for revisions to the policy that addresses wages.  These revisions to the policy reflect current practice.  The Board also approved an affiliation agreement with Meadowbrook Skilled Nursing & Rehab. 

An emergency expenditure of funds to Otis Elevator Company was authorized to cover the cost of repair to the north elevator at Olney Central College.  Cost of repairs to the elevator will be approximately $60,662.00.

Trustees approved employment of Assured Partners as the District’s next commercial broker and risk management firm.  This will allow the District to begin reviewing its coverages and bring recommendations for renewal to the Board. 

In personnel matters, the Board approved employment for Autumn Hoalt as Custodian at LTC to be effective February 21, 2022.

              A Change in status was approved for Tyson Murray, Advisor at Lincoln Trail College to College Admission Representative for the District and located at Lincoln Trail College to be effective June 1, 2022; and for Danelle Davis from Office Assistant at Lincoln Trail College to Bookstore Manager at Lincoln Trail College to be effective February 21, 2022.

The Faculty Seniority Lists for 2021-2022 were approved for both bargaining unit and non-bargaining unit faculty. 

Next regular meeting of the Board of Trustees will be held at Wabash Valley College, Mt. Carmel, on Tuesday, March 15th, at 6:15 p.m.  

SIGHTS & SOUNDS OF CHRISTMAS WINNERS RECEIVE PLAQUES

Several of the winners and sponsors of this year’s Sights & Sounds of Christmas Home Decorating Contest gathered last week at the Eagles in Mt. Carmel for the Winners Plaque Presentation.

Each year, those determined to be the best of the dozens of entries by either the judges or the people’s vote receive a yard sign to display during the season, along with a $25 Retail Merchant Gift Check. This group brought in those signs, trading them for a personalized winners plaque.

Winners this year included: Alan Clem (Grand Champion), Michael Harms (Most Festive), Kyle & Katelyn Bates (Best Inflatables), Gerrit Armstrong (Best Christmas Creation), Trey & Kelsey Beckerman (Best Traditional Theme), Val-Lisa Plassman (Winter Wonderland), Pat & Leah Merriel (Griswold Award), Larry Letson (Candy Cane Lane), Gill & Kelly Sanders (Honorable Mention), Mike Wilson (People’s Choice Award & Honorable Mention from the Judges) and Eclectic Boutique (Merry & Bright Business Award).

Sponsors for 2021 were the Wabash County Retail Merchants Committee, Travis Thompson Oil Corp, Mt. Carmel Eagles, Motorad, Jeff Thompson & Sons Oil Production, Christmas Uptown and the Mt. Carmel Lions Club.

New AOK Foundation Looks To Bring Imagination Library To Local Kids

Plans are in the works to develop a foundation through the AOK or All Our Kids Network that could result in some big things to help early childhood reading development. Wabash County Health Department administrator Judy Wissel explained the foundation is being called HERO, an acronym for Health Education Resources Opportunities. Wissel says the group is placing an emphasis on kindergarten readiness… 

According to its’ website, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library is dedicated to inspire a love of reading by gifting books free of charge to children from birth to age 5. To date, there are almost 2 million kids registered and nearly 175 million books have been gifted through the program. Wissel said the foundation has filed paperwork with the IRS and once approval is received, work will begin on their first project. 

WCSO Losing Deputy To ISP

The Wabash County Sheriff’s Department will soon lose a deputy to the Illinois State Police. Sheriff Derek Morgan reports that deputy Dylan Root will join the ISP in April. He said Deputy DJ Van Wormer will move from court security to full time road service.

The sheriff’s department will also be getting two vehicles soon. County commissioners approved spending $82,000 in American Rescue Plan funds for the new pick up trucks.

District #348 School Board President Addresses Mask Issue

At the beginning of Monday’s Wabash District #348 school board meeting, board president Tim Schuler addressed the recent Sangamon County court ruling removing the mask mandate in Illinois schools…. 

Despite the ruling, the Pritzker Administration has gone all out fighting the ruling and looking to reinstitute the mask mandate in Illinois schools.

The Following Preliminary Information is Being Released by Illinois State Police District 12

WHAT:                      Two Vehicle Traffic Crash with Injuries

WHERE:                   E. U.S. Route 50, eastbound at N. Olive Road, Flora, Clay County.

WHEN:                      Feb. 15, 2022 at approximately 7:45 p.m.

VEHICLES:              Unit 1 – Maroon 2009 Honda Accord

                                    Unit 2 – Black 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe (Flora Police Department Squad)

                                               

DRIVERS:                 Unit 1 – Steven A. Durr, a 20-year-old male from Mendenhall, MS – Transported by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

                                    Unit 2 – A 28-year-old male officer from Flora Police Department – Self-transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

PASSENGER:           Unit 1 – Anthony M. McGill, a 20-year-old from Mendenhall, MS - Transported by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries

PRELIMINARY:      Preliminary investigative details indicate the following occurred: Unit 1 was traveling northbound on N. Olive Road, approaching the intersection with E. U.S. 50 in Flora.  Unit 2 was traveling eastbound on E. U.S. 50, approaching N. Olive Road. Unit 1 failed to stop at the stop sign and proceeded north through the intersection.  The front end of Unit 1 struck the front middle passenger side of Unit 2. The driver and passenger of Unit 1 were transported by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of Unit 2 self-transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No further information will be disseminated.

CHARGES:               Durr was cited for Disobeying a Stop Sign, Failure to Yield at an Intersection, and Operating a Motor Vehicle with No Valid Proof of Insurance.  

 

 

All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Winslow Man Arrested for Impaired Driving while Transporting Two Children

Pike County – Monday evening, February 14, at approximately 5:40, Trooper Angermeier stopped the driver of a 2015 Nissan Altima on SR 57 near CR 200 West for a child restraint violation. The driver was identified as Kyler Lee, 26, of Winslow.  Lee’s three-year-old daughter was not restrained in a child safety seat and was moving freely in the rear passenger area. Lee’s one-year-old son was in a child safety seat but not properly restrained. While talking to Lee, Trooper Angermeier detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage.  Lee displayed signs of impairment and failed field sobriety tests. Further investigation revealed Lee had a blood alcohol content of .14%.  Lee was arrested and taken to the Pike County Jail where he is currently being held on bond.  His two children were released to their mother.
