Traffic stop nets arrest of two on drug charges

On May 31, 2021, at 5:44 p.m. Gibson County Deputy Zach Lienemann conducted a traffic stop on a Gray Passenger car for speeding on County Road 400 South near County Road 350 West. Upon approaching the vehicle Deputy Lienemann detected the odor of burnt Marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. At that point Deputy Lienemann and Deputy Brian Naas began a roadside investigation. At the conclusion of their investigation Deputy Lienemann placed 26-year-old Natalie Cozart and 57-year-old Pamela Milligan both of Owensville into custody and transported them to the Gibson County Jail. Upon arriving at the Jail Ms. Cozart was charged with Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Paraphernalia. Ms. Milligan was charged with Possession of Marijuana. Both individuals have posted bond.

All Criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

911 report of a fight leads to arrest of two

On May 31, 2021, at 10:41 p.m. Gibson County Central Dispatch received a 911 report of a fight located in the 100 block of East State Road 68 in Haubstadt. Upon arriving Deputy Brian Naas began an investigation into the incident and spoke to all parties involved. At the conclusion of his investigation he placed 21-year-old Trevor Dehosse of Princeton and 50-year-old Johnny Stevens of Haubstadt into custody and transported them to the Gibson County Jail. Upon arriving at the Gibson County Jail both Mr. Dehosse and Mr. Stevens were charged with Disorderly Conduct and Public Intoxication. They have both posted a $550 bond.

Assisting Deputy Naas in his investigation was Deputy Zach Lienemann.

All Criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Patoka man arrested on multiple charges

On May 27, 2021, at 3 p.m. Captain Bryan Ellis was dispatched to Windsor Machine located at 908 West Gach Road to investigate a battery that had occurred. Upon arriving Captain Ellis and other deputies began an investigation into the incident and spoke with all parties involved and reviewed video evidence available at the scene. At the conclusion of their investigation, 37-year old Joshua Delaney of Patoka was taken into custody and transported to the Gibson County Jail. Upon arriving at the Gibson County Jail Mr. Delaney was charged with Battery, Reckless Driving, and Criminal Recklessness. He has since posted a $750 bond.

INVESTIGATE OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING IN MT. VERNON, JEFFERSON COUNTY

Mt. Vernon, IL - The Illinois State Police (ISP) Zone 7 Investigations was requested by the Mt. Vernon Police Department (MVPD) to assist with an officer-involved shooting involving an officer from the MVPD. 

On June 2, 2021, at approximately 2:43 a.m., MVPD officers responded to a call of an armed robbery at a gas station in the 1800 block of South 10th Street in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. A preliminary investigation indicates a MVPD officer encountered an individual who matched the description of the suspect involved in the armed robbery.  As the MVPD officer approached the suspect, Fredrick Goss, 55-year-old male of Mt. Vernon, IL, he fled on foot.  The MVPD officer chased Goss on foot. During the foot chase, gunfire was exchanged between Goss and the MVPD officer.  Goss was struck by gunfire and was transported to a local area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  The MVPD officer was uninjured.  A firearm was recovered at the scene along with evidence relating to the armed robbery.

ISP Zone 7 Investigations is leading this open and on-going investigation.  No additional information will be released at this time by ISP Zone 7.

Changing Of The Guard Today At City Hall

A changing of the guard today at Mt. Carmel City Hall as long-time City Clerk Rudy Witsman’s retirement begins and former police chief Ryan Turner takes over. Witsman has been a fixture at City Hall for many years first serving as a city commissioner, then mayor, and city clerk during three mayoral administrations. Witsman and Turner have been working together for the last months to ensure a smooth transition. And, Mayor Joe Judge said Witsman’s expertise will still be readily accessible…

Other changes taking effect today include Mike McWilliams assuming Turner’s role as police chief and Eddie Johnson takes McWilliams’ role as city detective.

Summer Band Lesson Program at Wabash CUSD #348

This summer Wabash CUSD #348 students who will be in grades 6-8 in the fall have the opportunity to take free summer band lessons in June!  We got off to a great start last week with over a dozen students taking part in just the first week.  Students are making their own goals to work towards, such as finishing their method book, catching up to their grade level, learning a new instrument  or working on special ILMEA music.  Lessons are available for individual or small groups Mondays-Thursdays at the MCGS band room. In addition, next year's 5th graders will be having their first lessons as part of the "Beginning Band Bootcamp" during the week of June 21-24.  Please contact Mrs. Wall, ewall@wabash348.com, for more information or to schedule some lessons.

Bond Set At $500,000 For Mt. Carmel Man Charged With 7 Class X Felonies

32 year old Chad Covalt of Mt. Carmel is being held on a $50,000 cash bond in the Wabash County Jail after being charged with three counts of predatory criminal sexual assault and four counts of possession of child pornography.  Charges filed by State’s Attorney Kelli Storckman allege Covalt committed predatory criminal sexual assault of a child in connection to incidents between January of 2017 and this past Tuesday with a girl under the age of 13. The four child porn charges allege Covalt filmed and/or photographed  the unclothed young girl between January of 2017 and January of 2020. All 7 counts are Class X felonies. Covalt made his initial court appearance today via video where a preliminary hearing in the case was set for June 14th. The charges stem from an investigation by Mt. Carmel Police that resulted in Covalt’s arrest on Tuesday. A Class X felony in Illinois carries a possible prison sentence of 6 to 30 years on each count.

Mt. Carmel Man Goes To Jail Following Incident At East 8th Residence

On 5/25/21, Mt. Carmel Police arrested Clayton S. Kirkman, age 35, of Mt. Carmel, for Criminal Damage to Property after Kirkman allegedly damaged the interior of a home in the 200 block of East 8th Street while visiting. Kirkman was released on a Notice to Appear in court and a bond stipulation of no contact with the alleged victim or their property. Kirkman later returned to the residence violating the terms of the bond. Kirkman was placed under arrest and transported to the Wabash County Jail, where he was charged with Violation of Bail Bond and held pending a bond setting by a judge.
