ISP INVESTIGATE INCIDENT IN CLARK COUNTY ILLINOIS - UPDATE

Clark County, IL – On May 3, 2021 at approximately 9:40 p.m., the Illinois State Police (ISP) along with the Clark County, Illinois Sheriff’s Office were advised of a pursuit traveling westbound on Interstate 70 in Indiana, approaching Illinois. Preliminary reports indicate a vehicle driven by 32-year-old Brandon Shockley of Indianapolis, IN was being pursued by multiple Indiana law enforcement agencies. Shockley was wanted for an attempted homicide and was reported to be armed. Prior to crossing into Illinois, law enforcement deployed stop sticks, causing the vehicle to sustain a flat tire. The vehicle left the roadway and came to rest in the right ditch on Interstate 70 westbound near milepost 153 in Clark County, Illinois.

Indiana law enforcement officers gave verbal commands to the driver at which time a gun shot was fired from inside the vehicle. A Vigo County, Indiana Sheriff’s Deputy and a West Terre Haute, Indiana Police Officer fired their duty weapons at the vehicle.

When officers approached the vehicle, they located Shockley deceased in the driver seat with a firearm. The Clark County, Illinois Sheriff’s Department requested the ISP to investigate the officer involved shooting.

On Tuesday, May 4, 2021 an autopsy was conducted at Terre Haute Regional Hospital in Indiana. The preliminary results of the autopsy indicate Shockley died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and was not struck by gunfire from any police officer. No Illinois State Police officers were on scene at the time of the shooting, nor were any law enforcement officers injured during the incident. The investigation is open and ongoing.

MCPD Chief: No Wrecks Involving Golf Carts/UTV's Since Legalization

Opponents to legalizing the use of golf carts and UTV’s on Mt. Carmel streets pointed to the dangers of extra traffic on city streets. But, those fears have been unfounded. Since the golf carts and UTV’s became legal on city streets last year, police chief Ryan Turner reports there have been no accidents involving them saying those concerns didn’t match reality.

At Monday’s city council meeting, Turner also reminded golf cart and UTV owners to make sure their permit is up to date. He said a recent check revealed many expired permits. The permits can be renewed by stopping by the police department.

Turner also reported the police department has ordered a new Ford F-150 pickup truck that will be used by the K-9 officer when it arrives in about 10 weeks.
