A holiday tradition: Pledge to buckle up and drive sober

SPRINGFIELD – With the winter holidays underway, the Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois State Police are reminding travelers to buckle up and drive sober as law enforcement agencies statewide ramp up their Click It or Ticket and Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaigns to ensure a safer holiday season.

“If traveling is necessary over the holidays, we urge the public to take some simple steps to help everyone reach their destinations safely,” said Cynthia Watters, IDOT’s bureau chief of Safety Programs and Engineering. “Buckling up is the best way to protect yourself, while driving sober is one of the easiest things you can do to protect others.”

If you are celebrating with family and friends, you are urged to practice appropriate social distancing, keep gatherings to a minimum and wear a mask. For more guidelines from the Illinois Department of Public Health, visit dph.illinois.gov/covid19.

According to state crash data, three people died in three fatal crashes in Illinois last year between 6 p.m. on Dec. 24 to 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 25. Two were killed in crashes involving at least one driver who tested positive for alcohol. Current statistics show 1,075 people have died on Illinois roads this year compared to 972 at this time a year ago.

Now through the early morning hours of Jan. 4, motorists will see hundreds of additional seat belt enforcement zones and other patrols aimed at keeping Illinois roads safe.

“We remind everyone to ask themselves, first, is the travel essential, and, if it is, to please avoid the Fatal Four mistakes made by drivers – Speeding, Driving Under the Influence, Distracted Driving and Failure to Wear Seatbelt,” said ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly. “While you’re doing your part to protect your family by socially distancing, washing your hands, and wearing masks, help us protect our first responders by obeying the Move Over Law. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season.”

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” programs are funded with federal highway safety dollars administered by IDOT and done in conjunction with Life or Death Illinois campaign launched in 2018.

Illinois Officials Making Vaccination Plans

With thousands of COVID-19 vaccine doses from two companies being readied for distribution to Illinois, officials are detailing vaccination plans.

Nearly 64,000 health care workers had been vaccinated in Illinois as of Saturday.

The Illinois Department of Public Health said in the coming weeks the state will receive 120,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine and 320,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine.

During a Restore Illinois virtual hearing on Tuesday, Andrew Friend, deputy director of the Office of Preparedness and Response with IDPH, said officials are trying to pinpoint the exact number of doses to certain areas to minimize waste.

“Vaccine wastage happens normally with vaccination operations across the world,” he said. “Someone can drop a syringe, someone can drop a vial, these things happen, but what we are trying to do at the state level is prevent any type of wide-scale wastage.”

Friend said it is still uncertain when the general population will get vaccinated.

“It is dependent on a lot of different variables,” he said. “The first variable is how much vaccine is available and provided to the state, and the second variable is what is the uptake of that vaccine.”

Uptake means how many people get the vaccination once it becomes available.

After a person is vaccinated, they will be issued a card which will show what vaccine they received and when they received the shot.

“We need to track folks first dose and second dose," Friend said. “Why does that matter? If your first dose was Pfizer, your second dose has to be Pfizer. If your first dose is Moderna, your second dose has to be Moderna.”

U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams visited a Chicago hospital on Tuesday and met with health care workers as they received vaccinations. At a news conference, Adams said it was a great day.

“Two words for today: vaccine and vigilance,” Adams said. “We should be incredibly excited about the fact that we now have two different vaccines authorized for use.

Adams added that there will be 7.9 million vaccinations that will go out this week around the country.

Pandemic Strains Illinois Charities

The coronavirus pandemic is putting a strain on Illinois charities this holiday season.

The Salvation Army reports donations from their Red Kettle campaign, which accounts for 70% of the funds they raise for the entire year, are down statewide.

Katie Heinz, a spokesperson for the Salvation Army’s Metropolitan Division in northern Illinois, said there are a variety of reasons.

“I think we have had less kettles out this year due to the closing of some retail stores, less foot traffic, and also fewer people signing up to ring the bell this year,” Heinz said.

Major Dan Leisher of the Salvation Army of McLean County said the consumer shift to credit and debit cards hasn’t helped.

“People probably are not carrying as much cash as they used to, so its those same challenges we face almost every year,” Leisher said.

Leisher said there are now virtual kettles online to allow people to donate. You can also go online at RescueChristmas.org. The holiday campaign runs through January.

Food banks in Illinois are seeing an increased need. Organizers are now seeing former donors needing food. Pantries have seen a 60% increase in demand this year.

Toys for Tots campaigns around the state also faced challenges because of the pandemic. Nicole Arseneau with the Kankakee County Toys for Tots campaign, said they usually help 3,000 to 4,000 children each year. This year, the need skyrocketed to nearly 10,000 children.

Ceasar Perez, coordinator of the Champaign County Toys for Tots campaign, said their toy requests increased by 60% this year, and with around 20 toy boxes in the community instead of the usual 150, this year has been a challenge.

“Because of COVID, we had very few collection boxes around town because a lot of restaurants and businesses were closed or ordered shutdowns,” Perez said.

Perez added that some late donations came in, allowing them to make sure all the kids will have toys this Christmas season.

At their meeting last week, the WGH board of directors approved adding another 1,732 square feet to the project bringing the entire ortho expansion to 4,473 square feet.
