Mt. Carmel Man Arrested On Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse Charge

A 22 year old Mt. Carmel man is being held in the Wabash County Jail after being arrested on a Wabash County warrant for aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Brendan Schell was arrested following a Mt. Carmel Police investigation that was initiated by a sexual abuse allegation against Schell. He was located in the 100 block of West 8th Street where he was taken into custody and transported to the Wabash County Jail.

Schell is being held on a $4,000 cash bond, plus he is on parole from the Department of Corrections, who also issued a warrant with no bond.

Schell was one of two teens arrested in 2016 for an armed robbery at the Grayville Casey’s General Store after brandishing a compound bow and arrow at the clerk. He was sentenced to 8 years on that Class X felony before being paroled in May of 2019.

WVC TRIO celebrates first-generation college students

Wabash Valley College’s TRIO Student Support Services program invited WVC faculty, staff and students to celebrate first-generation college students on Friday, Nov. 6.

Eighteen members of WVC’s faculty, staff and student body showed up for the celebration photo, and the TRIO Upward Bound program was represented as well. The goal was for students to see how many of the instructors and staff were students, at one point, just like them. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, masks were worn and TRIO SSS staff shared that they were saddened by not being able to create more activities for the celebration.

On Nov. 8, 2017, the Council for Opportunity in Education and NASPA’s Center for First-generation Student Success launched the inaugural First-Generation College Celebration.

Since that time, hundreds of colleges across the nation have continued to mark this date — the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965 — as a day to celebrate first-generation students on their campuses.

First-Generation college student designation is one of the demographics eligible for the TRIO SSS program which is a free program. TRIO was brought about by President Lyndon B. Johnson as part of his war on poverty. Students who are income eligible also have access to this program.

Please contact Tayna Smith, the TRIO Academic Counselor at WVC, if you have any questions regarding the program.

Thank you to all who participated in the celebration photo, and congratulations to all first-generation college students!

IDPH Now Listing Probable Cases As Positive COVID-19 Cases

The Illinois Department of Public Health is combining two different types of positive COVID-19 results into one data set.

Dr. Ngozi Ezike says the state has a batch of antigen tests, those are only slightly less accurate than PCR tests.

If you test positive from a PCR test you have a confirmed result. If you test positive from an antigen test you are listed as probable. Until this past week those figures had been compiled separately. Ezike says that is changing.

The CDC has changed the guidelines to allow for those two types of test results to be combined into one data set. Often if you test positive with an antigen test you will go back for PCR testing. If that is the case Ezike says your case would only wind up being counted once in the state’s totals.
