Indiana State Police Investigating Police Action Shooting In Boonville
Warrick County - The suspect involved in this morning’s police action shooting has been identified as Marshall Coleman, 58, of Boonville.
According to state police detectives, the 911 call reporting a male with two knives threatening people at Governor Boon Square Apartments came from Coleman’s cell phone. Coleman resides in the complex and detectives believe Coleman made the 911 call to initiate a confrontation with police. When officers arrived they didn’t see anyone else outside other than Coleman and no other tenants reported being threatened or injured by Coleman.
The Boonville City Police Officers involved in the incident have been identified as Lt. Mark Hadley and Patrolman Trevor Winters. Both officers were placed on paid administrative leave until at least Monday.
The autopsy is taking place at this hour and additional information will be released as it becomes available.

All criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
Dubois County Highway Worker Escapes Serious Injury After being Shot At-Suspect in Custody
Dubois County: Around 3:00 pm on Thursday, Law Enforcement responded to the area of SR 64 and Pine Ridge Road after the Dubois County 911 Center received a call from a County Highway worker saying he had been shot at.
Preliminary investigation reveals that the Dubois County Highway Department was grading the snow on Pine Ridge Road at SR 64. As the driver turned the grader around and started north on Pine Ridge Road he noticed a male standing near the mailbox of 4715 Pine Ridge Road. Shortly after seeing the male, the window of the grader was shot. The driver of the grader left the area and called 911. Fortunately, the Dubois County Highway Department employee only received minor cuts to his face from the broken glass.
Officers responded and established a perimeter around the residence at 4715 Pine Ridge Road and attempted to establish communications with the suspect. At 11:13 pm after several hours of communicating with suspect, Indiana State Police SWAT breached the front door, and he then surrendered peacefully. The suspect, Virgil Lee Crews, 76 was taken to Jasper Memorial Hospital for evaluation before being taken to the Dubois County Security Center. Crews is charged with Criminal Recklessness with a Firearm and Battery.
“We are pleased that this incident ended peacefully and that no one was seriously injured. I would like to thank everyone that assisted with this detail. The peaceful outcome was truly a team effort,” said Lt. Allen, Commander of the Jasper Post.
Investigators are asking for anyone who might have been in the area at the time the shooting occurred to call the Indiana State Police Jasper Post at 812-482-1441.
State Road 64 was closed during the event but was officially re-opened at 11:45 pm.

PRELIMINARY: Preliminary investigative details indicate that unit #1 was traveling north on US RT 51 near Britt Road, south of Patoka, when it drove into the southbound lane. Unit # 2 took evasive action and swerved to the left in attempts to avoid unit # 1. Both units struck each other on the passenger sides. Unit #1 struck the southbound guardrail before coming to rest. Unit #2 swerved back to the right after contact with unit #1 and then exited the roadway to the right (west side). Unit #1 received extensive damage to the car and the driver required extrication and was airlifted for treatment

Braelyn Patton Wins MCJHS Spelling Bee
Mount Carmel Junior High School (MCJHS) conducted their annual spelling bee on Thursday, January 18th. There were 10 participants in the school wide spelling bee and they were selected due to being the winners of their classroom spelling bee.
The winner of the MCJHS 2018 Spelling Bee was Braelyn Patton, daughter of Ron and Kris Patton. Braelyn will represent MCJHS in the Tri-State Spelling Bee in Evansville on March 3rd. The runner up was Eli Sherman, son of Steven and Joy Sherman.

Loogootee Woman Arrested After Police Respond to a Fight outside of her Apartment
Martin County: Yesterday at approximately 1:08 pm the Martin County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a fight in progress between two males in front of the apartments located at NE First and the railroad tracks, in Loogootee. A short time later a trooper arrived in the area but didn’t see people fighting. As he walked around in the area looking for the fight he smelled the strong odor of burnt marijuana coming from 103 NE First Street Apt. 4. Not finding a fight in progress he waited until another trooper could arrive on scene to further investigate .
Trooper Jarrod Lents arrived and he along with Sgt. Chad Dick knocked on the door of apartment #4 but no one answered. They knocked again and Jasmine N. Jones, 24 opened the door. The troopers first inquired about the fight that was reported and Ms. Jones advised she did not see nor hear anyone fighting. The troopers then inquired about the strong smell of marijuana coming from within the apartment. Ms. Jones gave consent to the troopers to search her apartment. Inside of her apartment items commonly associated with marijuana use was located. Also present in the apartment were two juvenile males.
Ms. Jones was placed into custody and transported to the Martin County Jail where she was charged with Maintaining a Common Nuisance, Possession of Marijuana, Neglect of a Dependent, Contributing to the Delinquency of Minors, Possession of Paraphernalia and False Informing. While at the jail additional paraphernalia was located on Ms. Jones.
The juveniles were released to family members.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office and Loogootee Police Department.
Survey: IECC Employees "Very Satisfied" How District Is Operated
Results of the Employee Satisfaction Survey for the fiscal year 2017 were presented to the Board of Trustees of Illinois Eastern Community Colleges, at the regular meeting Tuesday, January 16, at Lincoln Trail College, Robinson.
In the fall of each year, District employees are given the opportunity to answer a survey which reviews the operation of the District and its four colleges. The employees were given an opportunity to review health and dental benefits, information availability, personnel changes, website quality, equipment and technology needs, and a variety of other questions concerning the District.
The Board reviewed the highest areas of agreement or strong agreement and the highest areas of disagreement or strong disagreement with the administration of the District. Overall, the survey shows that employees are very satisfied with the operation of the District.
A new Freedom of Information Act policy and fee structure were approved to ensure the District is in compliance with changes in the Act.
An application for Protection Health and Safety funds was approved to pay the cost of repairs to the Pedestrian Bridge at Olney Central College.
A Collective Bargaining Agreement was approved with the Illinois Eastern Colleges Education Association, IEA-NEA, for 2017-2018 and for 2018-2019.
The retirement of Thomas Baird, Telecommunications Instructor at LTC, was ratified effective June 1, 2108.
The resignation of Heather Ackman, Nursing Instructor at OCC was ratified effective January 1, 2018. The resignation of Liesl Wingert was ratified effective February 2, 2018.
Affiliation agreements were approved with area institutions for IECC health-related programs.
Next regular meeting of the Board of Trustees will be Tuesday, February 20, at 7 p.m. at Olney Central College.
