Mt. Carmel Code Enforcement Officer Heath Reed is reminding residents about the importance of obtaining a building permit before beginning construction.
Reed addressed the issue during last Monday’s City Council meeting after commissioners approved a property subdivision and setback variance involving two homes in the 1100 block of North Mulberry Street.
A garage built by a previous owner crossed the boundary between the two properties, requiring the current owner to seek city approval to adjust the property line and reduce the setback.
Reed said the city issued two building permits during the past two weeks, with both permits involving the construction of garages. He noted that neither garage will be built on a property line.
Reed said the permitting process is designed to identify potential zoning and boundary problems before construction begins.
He said obtaining a permit is an easy process that can prevent property owners from facing the additional time, expense and legal complications required to correct a problem later.
