The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that Illinois 1 (West Third Street) in Mount Carmel will be closed to allow Norfolk Southern to rebuild the railroad crossing beginning Monday, May 2.
A detour directing traffic onto Oak Street and Illinois 15 (Ninth Street and Walnut Street) will be posted. Work is expected to be completed by Wednesday, May 4.
No traffic will be permitted on Illinois 1 between Copp Avenue and Poplar Street, and motorists are encouraged to follow the posted detour and should allow for extra travel time. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
