As we begin to get things back to normal from the COVID shutdowns of the last two years, the Mt. Carmel City Council has given the go ahead for two new events to attract visitors to town.
The first is a resurrection of the Lone Ranger Festival presented by John Clancy of the Little Egypt Arts Center. Clancy said part of his effort will include a pledge drive looking to erect a Lone Ranger statute with Mt. Carmel’s own Brace Beemer, the original radio voice of the masked man. Clancy said he hoped to have the festival the weekend of June 17th, which is also the weekend for Roots ‘n Que.
Speaking of bar-be-que, Mt. Carmel may once again be hosting a Kansas City Bar-Be-Que Society competition in September. Chris and Tina Howton plan the professional and backyard cooking competition for September 17th. The event is called “Smokin’ For Garrett” in memory of their 19 year old son Garrett who was killed in a tragic boating accident in 2014. The Howton’s have hosted the event since then in Boonville, but have since moved to Mt. Carmel. Information is available online at https://www.smokinforgarrett.com/ or the group’s Facebook page.
